Interaction with GuestsWe are totally flexible and just want you to have the comforts of home, feel like you really belong in Calella and experience a true sense of the Catalan life. The space allows you to be totally independent if that's your style but we'd love you to take full advantage of all the valuable information and recommendations for stuff to do and places to eat from one of the most authentic resources in Calella, our very own, Silvia. IT'S UP TO YOU! The NeighborhoodCalella... a lively little town set on two miles of golden sandy beaches, a mere hour north of Barcelona on the Costa Maresme. All the hotels in this friendly town have signed up to keeping your children busy – for free.
All little guests can take part in supervised activities on the magnificent Blue Flag beach – including foam parties, kayaking, bouncy castles, volleyball, football, aerobics, dancing, games and more.
They are officially for under-12s, but young teens can accompany their younger brothers and sisters to share the fun as well.
Parasailing, banana rides, windsurfing and boat trips (which cost extra) are also available from the watersports centre on the beach.
Its outstanding location makes, Calella, for a first-rate seaside resort and it has received the Blue Flag European quality award on numerous occasions. FEE's Blue Flag criteria include standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management criteria. The Blue Flag is sought for beaches, marinas and sustainable boating tourism operators as an indication of their high environmental and quality standards.
Calella is also a great destination for sporty types. There is a cycling track along the coast (ask Silvia about Fun Bikes), two Olympic-size public swimming pools for keen trainers (one in the Club Natacio Calella) and Nordic walking trails up into the mountains of the nearby Montnegre National Park.
The town itself has a cute old quarter with a lovely church and a pretty square which hosts festivals and markets throughout the year. Also, next door to church square is the municipal square which is also very lovely with many terraces to enjoy a cool drink or some coffee.
It’s in the heart of the autonomous region of Catalonia, which has its own language, government and police force.
The people are fiercely proud of their heritage and Catalan flags fly from every balcony.
And it’s not all about the kids.
The beach is wide enough to escape the crowds and find a quiet spot for a siesta.
At the Silence Spa, in the same complex as the big pool, you can while away a few hours having a massage or beauty treatment or just chill out in the Thalasso spa.
Culture vultures can hop on the train – the station is on the seafront and the rails hug the coast all the way to Barcelona.
Trains run every half-hour.
The last train back to Calella is at around 11pm so you can enjoy dinner in Barcelona before heading back after a day of gawping at Gaudi’s architecture.
Calella ticks a great many boxes – it’s perfect for young families or couples, foodies or fitness fanatics.
There’s room for everyone.
But what I like most about it is that it isn’t a purpose-built resort catering just for foreign tourists.
It is a working town, which just happens to have a fantastic beach – so you get a great Catalan atmosphere, fabulous shops, and superb cafés and restaurants which are just as likely to be enjoyed by locals as holidaymakers.
