The Neighborhood Vários pontos de interesse nesta região. The pool is privately owned by the development. A little background information on the village of Alcoutim. Located in the north eastern part of the Algarve is the beautiful and historical village of Alcoutim, which is situated on the Guadiana river which forms the border line to the adjacent Spanish village of Sanlucar. This is fantastic location to relax and unwind and experience the true Portugal instead of the usual commercial tourist resorts found along the Algarve. .Alcoutim is a white stonewashed village surrounded by orange groves and countryside. It features restaurants serving typical Portuguese dishes and local wines, coffee shops, various water sports and leisure boat trips, country walks where you can admire the enormous variety of natural flora and wildlife, relax on the blue flag beach located on the estuary, or explore the grounds of the castle overlooking the quaint white washed Spanish village of Sanlucar. For tourist information about Alcoutim, its beautiful river beach, accommodation, local gastronomy, things to do (including boat trips along the Guadiana river that separates Portugal from Spain) and local events. Also discover the fascinating areas that surround Alcoutim, such as Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim, that make the eastern Algarve such a wonderful region, especially for anyone interested in history, traditions and outdoor activities such as walking and observing nature. Alcoutim is a pretty village on the banks of the Guadiana river, about 40km north of Vila Real de Santo António. As long ago as 2,500BC the region around Alcoutim attracted people because of the deposits of copper, iron and manganese and in Roman times a number of mines were established. The ores were smelted locally and then shipped down the Guadiana to the Mediterranean. Alcoutim became quite an important settlement as it is here that the river becomes tidal and the ships often had to wait for hours for the tides. The remains of a 14th century castle can be seen on the hillside overlooking Alcoutim and now houses a small archaeoligical museum. Similar castle remains can be seen on the hill on the Spanish side of the river, overlooking the village of São Lucas do Guadiana. They are visible reminders of the times when Portugal and Castile were at war with each other, and it was in the middle of the river opposite Alcoutim that Kings Henrique and Fernando I signed a peace treaty. Alcoutim is a hillside town of cobbled streets, small squares and a paved promenade along the river front which is overlooked by a handful of cafes and restaurants. The river is quite narrow at this point and various sailing boats and river craft float gently on the waters, with a backdrop of rolling, green hills. The church near the river front originates from the 16th century, but has been re-built on a number of occasions. Over the porch are the arms of the Marquises of Vila Real and Counts of Alcoutim. Even if you are not staying in Alcoutim it really is worth driving there, not only to see the town itself, but also to enjoy the unspoilt countryside that you pass through. If you follow the EN122 north from Castro Marim, the first small detour is to the left on the 1132 to the Barragem do Beliche (dam). Go back to the EN122 and continue north until a right turn to Foz de Odeleite (on the 1063). This is where the Ribeira (brook) de Odeleite joins the Guadiana river, the surrounding area is rich in wild flowers and there are a few houses interspersed with vegetable gardens and fruit trees dotted along the roadside. There are a few moorings along the banks of the river as it gently meanders through the countryside with the rounded, green hills in the background. It is so peaceful and a wonderful area to walk in, and is quite unlike the Algarve that most people know. Carry on through Álamo to Laranjeiras and Montinho das Laranjeiras (where the remains of a Roman villa have been uncovered) and finally to Alcoutim. Alcoutim is in a beautiful setting - sitting on the bank of the Guadiana river with rolling, green hills as a backdrop. In the springtime the countryside is full of wild flowers of all colours - a perfect time for long walks. It is so different from the south coast beach resorts and yet only about half an hour's drive away. There are lots of places to explore around Alcoutim - a journey along the N124 takes you to Pereiro and Martinlongo, or head northwards on the N122 to the southern Alentejo and the picturesque town of Mértola (approximately 30km from Alcoutim). It is a quiet riverside town in the Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana with ruins of a 13th century castle and a church converted from a mosque in the 12th century. South of Alcoutim is the historically important town of Castro Marim - the ruins of it's Moorish castle and 17th century fort were built to defend the Algarve border with Spain and to protect shipping using the Guadiana river. The castle offers panoramic views over the salt pans, Castro Marim Nature Reserve and Spain across the river. Just a few kilometres south of Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo António sits at the mouth of the Guadiana and the golden, sandy beaches of the Algarve start and go on and on! This eastern end of the Algarve, bordering the Guadiana, really hasn't seen much in the way of modern development yet and is a wonderful area to visit if you want something a little bit different. A car is essential to get around, but the roads are good and very quiet and it does give you the opportunity to see so much. Relax on the blue flag beach located on the estuary or maybe take a boat trip along the River Guadiana.

No television, no wifi BUT a glorious situation on the Guadiana river in southern Portugal. See also our website; www.casaguadiana.com The house is set in 2 acres of private land and has its own landing stage where the boats are kept. The Guadiana is perhaps one of Europe's great undiscovered rivers, having 75km of beautiful, navigable waterway between Vila Real at the mouth of the river and the old fortified town of Mertola which is the highest point of navigation for boats. Canoeists have a further 30km of very remote water to explore upstream of Mertola. For the not so boat minded the beaches and golf courses of the Algarve are 45 mins drive away. there is a large network of footpaths and seldom used tracks to explore. Bicycles, motor scooters and off road buggies can be hired in the local village in season (bicycle hire is possible all year with prior notice). The old portuguese towns of Mertola, Serpa and Beja are an easy drive away for a day´s sightseeing. A little further are Seville (2 hrs) and Lisbon (3 hrs). A spacious and lovingly restored house with stunning views in the centre of Alcoutim, a delightful village by the River Guadiana. The house has 3 double rooms and 2 bathrooms. The house has been recently restored, by the owners, in a modern but traditional style. All the rooms are spacious, light and airy. There are two outdoor spaces, the private courtyard with a shaded dining area and a view down to the river, then there are steps up to the roof terrace where there is a sun lounge area and fantastic views of Alcoutim, the river and across to Spain. Casa Andorinha is an ideal place for those who love the countryside and a river scene but who also want to experience traditional Portuguese life away from the busy coastal areas. Situated an hour from Faro Airport and half an hour from the coast, the charming village of Alcoutim is found on the banks of the magnificent River Guadiana, the border between Spain and Portugal. The house is located on a quiet cobbled street near the river and close to the centre where there are a choice of cafes and restaurants serving local dishes many with riverside views. Across the river is the typical Andalusian village of Sanlucar where one can enjoy a Tapas and watch the sun set over Alcoutim. A regular ferry service runs between the two villages. The beautiful hills and countryside that surround the villages are wonderful for walking, bird-watching and biking with many paths and tracks to follow through the valleys of olive and almond trees. The river is a great place to get out on the water, with local kayak hire available or charter a boat to take you up river. For the more adventurous there is a 800m Zip Wire which carries you from near the castle in Sanlucar over the river and lands in Alcoutim. For those wanting to relax , swim and sunbathe there is the delightful fresh water beach close to the village, and a popular place for a picnic amongst the shade of the trees. A hire car is recommended as public transport is limited and it allows for days out. Within ½ hour there are a variety of beautiful un-crowded beaches to discover on the Eastern Algarve, and the nearest towns of Vila Real and Tavira are great places to wander around the pedestrian cobbled streets both for shopping and eating out. For those wanting to see more of the interior of Portugal, head north to the Alentejo, and the stunning Moorish town of Mertola in the Guadiana National Park..
