"My guest and I enjoyed reading in her library room, her homemade cookies and milk, and good conversation." (Dominic, 2016) Interaction with GuestsOur #1 concern is for our guests to be comfortable, so we will do our best to be available when a guest wants or needs us to be. We are happy to make recommendations about restaurants, cultural activities, or tourist destinations in the area. “The host was absolutely wonderful. She was helpful with suggestions about places to eat and things to see, without overstepping her bounds. It was the perfect mix of privacy and gentle stewardship.” (Jamie, 2016)" The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood is a quiet, residential one within moderate walking distance to restaurants and shopping and under ten minutes drive from the heart of downtown. From national chains such as Talbots, Office Depot, and Schlotzkys to local family owned stores and restaurants, everything our guests might need or want to visit is within a ten to fifteen minute walk. 575 Pizzeria, recently recognized by Urbanspoon as the nation’s best pizza place, is within a fifteen minute walk. The SpaceThe Gate House is so named because there is a rolling security gate which encloses the private parking. The house is about 1,000 square feet. With few rooms it feels much larger. There is lots of storage space and an open feeling in the living room and kitchen. The kitchen has every appliance you will need to do your laundry and make your own meals. You will certainly feel at home. We've stocked everything you will need except groceries and what's in your suitcase. It's time to come home now. When I was about 5 years old I decided the rules in my home were unacceptable and I was going to run away. My big sister and her friends were loud and wouldn't let me play with them. Mama helped me pack my suitcase. I was leaving and getting my own house with my own rules. When I got to the street I knew I could not cross. I went back to the house and asked Mama if I could cross the street. She said, "No" and invited me in for milk and cookies. No one left until 1963 when I was 12 years old she died leaving me behind. I am so glad I have such fond memories of her. We bought the property in 1998. Soon we got to know neighbors who told fond stories of the original owners. We remodeled the old house in the back for rental property . I loved the history of the house. I often thought about my own story. I wanted the house to be that dream home of peace and quiet and my own rules. The history of the Gate House is fascinating. It was the original house. It was going to be the servants quarters. The couple moved into the Gate House as soon as it was built and planned on living there while the big house in the front was built. Very soon their dreams were put on hold as War World II broke out and there were no building supplies available. One disappointment after another kept the young couple from building their dream home. The lady who owned the house was so friendly and welcoming there was almost always a guest or two. She loved to have guests. Children were born and eventually the couple raised 5 children in the small home. Then there were college expenses and children left home one by one until eventually the lady was widowed. In the 1970's a daughter built the big house in the front and took care of her elderly mother who continued to live in the original house. We have been told story after story about the kind lady who was never bitter about not being able to build the big house. She was a wonderful host and made everyone feel at home in her small house in the back. One day the daughter suggested she invite her guests to the daughters house in the front as it was larger. The lady declined. You will never guess why. It was because she wanted her own house with her own rules! The lady lived many years and past away in the 1990's in hospice where she continued to have guests to the very end. We rented it to college kids and single mothers. But, it never felt right. You see, no one went by my rules. They did not know to appreciate having the peace and quiet the house naturally affords its visitors, not until now. We have had such a good experience renting to short term guests. They all know they are welcome and they all love the house as it should be! Guest AccessYou will know you are there when you see the bright WELCOME flag flying! The Gate House is on the alley behind our house. It's not as bad as it sounds. In fact people who are well known like the more private entrance. We NEVER tell who is staying or has stayed. After all, we want those folks to come back! Now, if they leave a referral for us that's great! While there is no yard there is a long ranch porch and there are three parks within walking distance. Gold's Gym , well known for their excellent exercise provisions, private trainers, hot tubs, swimming pools, racket and basketball courts is about 10 minutes away and will accept temporary memberships. Interaction with GuestsAs soon as you book with us I will be welcoming you by text messaging. We have a five star rating because we really care. The house is clean, quiet and ready for you before you come. I'll ask for a four digit code to put in the door lock. I'll ask about your diet. If you are a vegetarian or need lactaid free milk I really do want to know before you get here. We respect your privacy. We do not "bother" our guests. You are not pressured to meet us or entertain us. We probably wont meet face to face unless there is a problem. While The Gate House is on our private property we seldom see our long term guests unless they let us know they are home. We are often out on our private patio where we can hear the guests drive up. We usually invite them to come join us. When we cook out we often take the guest a plate. We are friendly, and want our guests to feel at home yet we don't have daily interaction with them. The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood is part of the history of Amarillo. You will see a blend of very old homes and newer homes built around what was formerly the farm lands of the mansions. Many homes have what was formerly servants quarters. Most homes have beautiful yards. In the early morning and late after noon on to around 10PM you will see families out walking or individuals jogging and biking. Getting AroundThe Gate House is just 2 blocks from I-40 and about 6 blocks from the I 40/1-27 interchange. Just 10 minutes away from the down town banking and court center The Gate House is also 10 minutes away from 6th Street AKA Route 66. 6th Street offers a wide range of entertainment from antique shopping, Chamber Music concerts, art shops, wonderful hamburgers and night time entertainment. The medical center is about 15 minutes away from Northwest Hospital, Baptist St. Anthony Hospital, Texas Tech School of Pharmacy, Herrington Cancer Center, many doctors offices, and countless day surgery hospitals. "The Grand Canyon of Texas" you will see on bill boards as you drive the main roads into Amarillo is Palo Duro (Spanish for hard wood) Canyon where the amphitheater for the show Texas which is celebrating their 50th Anniversary. There are many things to do in our small town. We are not far from activities like rock wall climbing, pain ball , lazer tag, and Amarillo is in the beginning stages of building a new ball park. Other Things to NoteThe paved alley entrance to The Gate House is just that, a neighborhood alley. On one hand we wish we had another entrance but on the other hand coming and going is usually private and no one notices when the guest is in or not. The seclusion can be an asset for high profile people. The rolling security gate to the parking area is private, no one parks in the guest spot other than the guest. We do apologize for the toilet. The house was built in the 1940's. I'm not going to lie to you. The toilet is so close to the tub very large people may want to come see it before they stay. But, like one guest told us, "The edge of the tub is a good place to put your feet up".

The SpaceThis space is best for the individual traveler or a couple, but we do have a very nice Queen standing Insta-bed Airbed. (extra person fee of $10 will apply for 3 to 4 people) Guest AccessThe apartment is private and has all essentials. You are welcome to use the back yard and patio. I live in the house and am normally around, unless we've gone on vacation :) Interaction with GuestsI live on the property and can be as present as you want me to be. We've had guests that we've entertained in our home and we've had guests we didn't get a chance to meet. If we're at home, we're happy to get to know you! The NeighborhoodBivins is an older, eclectic neighborhood with beautiful homes mostly built in the 1940's. It is in the Cultural Arts District, close to Downtown & Historic Route 66. It has a unique park that runs through the middle that's a great place to take your morning jog. Bivins is also very close to great quaint shopping and restaurants. Getting AroundWe are right on I-40 and very close to I-287. Our place is very accessible to all of Amarillo and close to Downtown, too! They are also welcome to hang out in the backyard, but please don't let them stay outside overnight. We also have a lovely lady who cleans for us. Please feel free to leave her tips :) We have internet TV. The TV in the apartment has an Amazon Fire Stick which allows you to stream all sorts of TV. We have different apps available including Hulu, Sling TV, Amazon Prime, etc. We also have an antenna so that you can view local stations as well. If you turn on the TV and don't have any channels, click the source button on the TV remote until you get to HDMI. If you still have a blank screen, press the center of the circle button on the Amazon remote and the home screen should come up. If your wanting to watch live TV, Sling TV is what we use for that. Enjoy!

Dont let the paved alley entrance with private parking and a locking gate fool you. The house is delightfully nice and clean. History of The Gate House: When I was a little girl I decided to run away . I was going to go out and make a life of my own. After all I was five years old. I was not going to be held back by the rules of my home any longer.I was going to go get my own house and make my own rules. It was going to be my dream house. My mother helped me pack and told me she loved me and I was welcomed home any time. When I got to the gate I found the street. I was not allowed to go in the street. I went back into the house and asked my mother if I could go in the street. She said I could not, but I could come sit with her and have cookies and milk for a while. I never left again. But, I never stopped dreaming about having my own house and how fine it would be some day. When we bought the property we really bought it for the luxury of the front house. We had no idea about the history of the home. As we took possession of the property we investigated every square inch. We brought flamboyant ladies hats out of the attic and romantic letters written during the war. There were postcards from all over the world! As we read the postcards and letters we became curious about the original owners. There was something unfinished. Dreams yet fulfilled. We began to meet neighbors and ask questions about the original owners of the house. We were given a loving history of the lady who dreamed a dream that never came true. The older house was the original house built before World War 2. The family planned to live in what would later become the servants quarters until they built their own house which would be in front of the servants quarters. World War II broke out and they weren't able to get building supplies to build their own home. They raised 5 children in the 1,000 sq foot, 3 room house. When the time came they could afford to build the big house they would need the money to send a child to college or a wedding to pay for. Well, when you have five kids it's a never ending story. The dream of the big house never happened for the woman who built the servants quarters for her own temporary home. She had such a giving, loving legacy. It's as if she became the servant herself. Every elderly neighbor had a story to tell of how this beautiful woman had given more than she had to give her whole life. How she had been the best cook and invited many to come stay in her home . She loved to have guests and was never bitter she had never had her dream home. In the 1970's one of the daughters built the large home in the front . The daughter lived in the large home and took care of the mother the rest of her life until she was moved to hospice care. The daughter and her family lived in the big house until they retired and moved away. When the elderly neighbors told us the story of the woman who had a dream that never came true we fell in love with the woman and with the small house. We decided to invest time and money to make the house a place we thought the lady should have lived in all her life. We put up walls and, replaced electrical wires and modernized the house. We rented it to college kids. It just wasn't right. The house was not loved as it should have been. At last we found the answer. It should be a guest house! Now, there will be lots of visitors from all over the world just like the post cards. And low and behold everyone who comes to the Gate House falls in love with it too!
