The SpaceRuru Hut is a warm and cosy haven which has a double bed, refrigerator and cooking facilities (including bbq and coal range), ideally suited for two people. A few steps away via the covered verandah is the bathroom hut with shower and toilet. A short boardwalk leads to the gorgeous outside bath. The superb sunny outdoor living space set amongst the bush provides access to our private track along the Kawhaka Creek stream boundary, featuring magnificent tree ferns and mature native trees and leads to the 2 private swimming holes. All of our facilities and activities are on our private property of 3Ha and access is exclusive to our guests. Ruru Hut is situated close to our house but far enough away that it is private and peaceful - just in WiFi range ! Relax and listen to the beautiful daylight songs of the tuis and bellbirds and the haunting call of the ruru owl during darkness. Guests have exclusive access to the immediate environment of Ruru Hut, private bush walk and swimming holes. Washing machine and drier access can be arranged, also microwave. A small washing line and pegs are provided. Please note there is no cell phone access on site, free WiFi is provided and telephone landline can be used by arrangement. We enjoy interacting with our guests and are happy to share our knowledge and experience of the local environment. We can arrange local activities such as gold panning, fishing, hunting, hiking and cycling. We love the easy access to superb native forests, streams, rivers and beaches. We are close to the West Coast Wilderness trail (part of the NZ wide cycle trail) and are happy to pick up and drop off cyclists, we provide covered storage for your bicycles on our site. The closest section of the cycleway to us is the magnificent ride up the Kawhaka valley to Cowboy Paradise (check out (website hidden)). A feature of our location is the abundant native bird life including tuis, bellbirds, native pigeons and ruru (native owl). Relax in the private environment of Ruru Hut and enjoy the bird song or maybe explore the local beaches, hike in the forests or visit the picturesque town of Hokitika to sample the excellent cuisine, theatres and local shopping. As we are in a high rainfall area (without which we wouldn't have our magnificent forests), it's advisable to bring wet weather gear with you as well as suitable footwear for hiking etc - we do provide complimentary "gum boots" for guests to use. We are happy to pickup guests from the airport, cycleway or other locations by arrangement - contact us for travel options. We provide free parking at our premises and under cover cycle storage. Some activities are obviously seasonal such as fresh water fishing (we have some great salmon fishing over here !) but most are able to be done all year round. Just let us know what you are interested in before you arrive and we'll do our best to arrange it. Guest AccessGuests have exclusive access to the immediate environment of Ruru Hut, private bush walk and swimming holes. Washing machine and drier access can be arranged, also microwave. A small washing line and pegs are provided. There is no cell phone access on site, free WiFi is provided and telephone landline can be used by arrangement. Interaction with GuestsWe enjoy interacting with our guests and are happy to share our knowledge and experience of the local environment. We can arrange local activities such as gold panning, fishing, hunting, hiking and cycling. Annie loves baking so rest assured you may get some of her culinary delights ! The NeighborhoodWe live in a rural environment so almost all our neighbours are farmers, traffic is sparse but you do need to take care if travelling on gravel roads... Other Things to NoteTravel time to Hokitika is 15-20 minutes comfortable drive where you can find all the amenities of a small town such as service stations, supermarket (closes at 8:30pm), library, etc - the only thing missing is traffic lights (there are none on the whole 600km length of the West Coast of the South Island !)

Feed the rainbow trout in our lake and watch them jump right out of the water on a good day! We are approx. 12km inland from Hokitika, and 5km from stunning Lake Kaniere. Perfect afternoon/day trip from Hurunui Jacks…Lake Kaniere, the amazing Dorothy Falls, and the breathtaking Hokitika Gorge. Then cruise into Hokitika, have fish and chips or pizza by the beach maybe, go driftwood hunting, check out the arty shops, the West Coast Wine Company. Come ‘home’ and have your own private party by the brazier (we will have it all set up for you, ready to go) at the end of the evening. The West Coast Wilderness Trail (part of the New Zealand wide cycle trail initiative) runs through our property. There are mountain bikes available for you to use. Also included will be everything you need to prepare your own breakfast - our own free range eggs, Vogels bread, butter & home made preserves/muesli/Greek yogurt/fresh fruit/milk/juice and teas and real coffee and hot chocolate for you to enjoy. Guest AccessWe may have other guests on site by the river (we have a glamping tent also), so at times there may be some restrictions on our bush walk to ensure all guests have total privacy. Interaction with GuestsHappy to share our local knowledge and have a chat to your about your plans for your time on the West Coast. Getting AroundAlthough only 12kms from Hokitika, we are classed as rural - there is no public transport service to us. The SpaceSet on a private 47 ha property on Island Hill, Kawhaka Valley, is Tom's Hut, my home away from home, our family's rustic mountainside cabin. This site has the only Cell Phone coverage on this leg (day 2) of the West Coast Wilderness Trail. If you do not have access to a 4x4, I am happy to drop you in and out of the property or if cycling can meet you on site. When you are here there is ample to do and see, such as fishing, hunting and plenty of natural and historic history sites. For those bird lovers, this is a birding paradise, I have been trapping for over 30 years and the birds love it. If you book for a local tour, I am willing to show you around the natural and historical history sites on the property and of course you can cycle the trail .
