The SpaceThe cottage is a quirky but comfortable place to spend a few days. It is an old relocated school prefab building from the Otago area. It has been furnished with a mixture of old and new pieces that I have collected over the years. The bed is queen size and fitted with high quality linen, a queen size electric blanket and Novadown woollen duvet inner. The bedside tables are vintage hairdressing chairs that have been refit with lamps to cater for night time reading. You have a fully equipped kitchen and dining table as well as your own bathroom and laundry. The couch can be folded out to a bed suitable for small children - if this is something you need please discuss it with us in your booking enquiry. Guest AccessThere is no television in the cabin. The cabin has wireless internet with a good connection. You are free to relax anywhere on the section but expect you to respect the privacy of my home and outside deck area. There is a large table with chairs under a tree that is within internet range that you are free to use. The cabin is completely self contained, and you are welcome to use the laundry at anytime. Please advise if you have a vehicle so we can show you where to park. There are also two mountain bikes available for you to use during Summer. Interaction with GuestsI have spent a lot of time travelling so totally understand and respect people's desire for privacy, though I am here for anything you may need. Due to my working schedule I may not be home when you arrive or during your stay but will let you know my plans with your booking details. The NeighborhoodThe village of Athol is a very small quiet place with about 35 local residents. There are two cafes with food, internet, postal service and basic supplies available. Local fishing is represented by Stu's Fly Shop that caters to the many people who travel from around the world to fly fish on the Mataura River. We are surrounded by farmland typical to the local dairy industry. Getting AroundThere is no public transport.

It sits on the banks of the beautiful Oreti River and is surrounded by mountains. It has a primary and a secondary school, a modern supermarket, a number of cafÊs and restaurants, pharmacy, post office, pub, dairy, liquor shop, petrol station, library and medical center. Rod and Wheel House is positioned in its own private garden surrounded by hedges. However it is also only a short walk from shops, restaurants and town services. The Oreti River travels for over 171kms and slowly curves its way through the open plains of the lower South Island. Its middle sections pass right next to Lumsden and it is possible to walk to the river from Rod and Wheel House. Southland is one of the strongholds for brown trout fishing in New Zealand. Brown trout averaging around 5 – 6 pounds and double digit fish are common but challenging to catch. Both the size and numbers of brown trout in the upper Oreti make it exceptional on a national basis. In particular, the average size of brown trout, at just over 6 lbs, is over 10% greater than in ten other highly valued South Island headwater fisheries. The numbers of large trout now being recorded, at some 48 per kilometer, make the Oreti headwaters one of the most productive trout fisheries nationally. Southland is also home to flocks of gulls, ducks and other water birds. The Oreti River has been identified as an Important Bird Area because for much of its length it supports breeding colonies of the only endangered gull in the world - Black-billed Gulls. Breeding flocks of these birds frequent the banks and islands of the Oreti River- one of their last refuges in New Zealand. Pairs of paradise-duck are also common. The paradise shelduck is a semi-terrestrial waterfowl that has goose-like features. They are commonly observed flying in pairs or grazing on pasture. They are very vocal birds, with males giving a characteristic zonk zonk while females make a more shrill zeek zeek while flying or as a warning to intruders. The river also frequently attracts flocks of migratory swallows who feast on the mayfly hatches. Walking along the banks of the Oreti River looking at the birds, colorful pebbles and sparkling blue water is a very pleasurable experience enjoyed by both tourists and residents.

The region's most popular tourist activity is fishing for large wild brown trout. With a strong fishing rod and NZ fishing license an angler can easily access many waterways. Some waters are crystal clear and suitable for careful sight fishing and stalking while other rivers are fast flowing and can be fished with multiple casts over promising water. Some rivers have smaller populations of very large trout while others have larger populations of medium sized fish. In fact there is water suitable to test every fly fishing skill level. Many trout fishing guides operate in the local area and are very helpful with local information and advice. See (website: hidden) for more information about fly fishing for trout in the Lumsden area. Lumsden forms part of the spectacular new cycle touring trail called the Around The Mountains Cycle Trail. This is a mountain bike and cycle trail that traverses over 172 km through towering mountains, forests, farms across rivers and past lakes. The trail starts from Queenstown with a ferry trip across Lake Wakatipu. Cyclists then ride to Walter Peak, Mavora Lakes, Mossburn, Lumsden and Kingston. The trail opened in October 2014 and promises to be one on New Zealand's most popular and scenic cycle tracks. Oreti River House offers very comfortable accommodation to cyclists seeking to sample one leg of the trail over a weekend. Two circuits are possible from Lumsden. The first is to Mossburn. This circuit involves crossing the Oreti River then passing farmland with a majestic mountain backdrop, lunching at Mossburn before returning to Lumsden. This trip is a very pleasant 40km return which should take some 3- 4 hours to complete. The other circuit travels north to Five Rivers. This pleasant 28 km round trip passes along the banks of the Oreti River before stopping at Five Rivers for lunch. The round trip back to Lumsden will take about 3-4 hours. The Around The Mountains Cycle Trail is also open to walking parties who will also appreciate the spectacular scenery and safe off-road pathway. Many sections of the Around the Mountains Trail follow old steam train easements offering gentle grades and curves away from busy roads. Other suggested activities include jet boating on Lake Manapouri, enjoying the Milford Track guided day walk or visiting the Glow Worm Caves from Te Anau, seeing a real tuatara in the Southland Museum and Art Gallery in Invercargill (a fascinating and rare reptile dating from before the dinosaur age), having a fabulous day out on FishJet on the Waiau River, visiting the Croydon Aviation Heritage Museum at Mandeville and seeing the bottle house at Waikaia. One of the most popular and simplest activities offered in Lumsden is walking along the edges of the Oreti River which passes near Lumsden - about a 10-15 minute walk away. As a river on a glacial stream-bed, it winds and braids through wide open areas of colourful pebbles- its aqua blue waters home to rising trout, dipping swallows, timid ducks and geese. It is home to small populations of the Black Billed Gull-the only endangered gull species in the world. Flocks of this shy bird can often be seen flying over Oreti River House.
