The SpaceThe mid spaced outdoor porch is fantastic. (chairs, BBQ, table etc) Open to the stars and sun, but no neighbors can look in! I'm willing to make a deal last minute or off season! Please note: this is an older beach house that gets a lot of traffic during the season. If you are expecting the 4 Seasons, you will be disappointed! The vast majority of folks absolutely love the casual, no frills, vintage feel. There are some folks (luckily just a very few) who spend their time looking for faults. If this is how you roll, do us both a favor and check into a hotel! Mattresses, for example, are new and foam. They are thinner than traditional mattresses but super comfy. We chose to use mattresses that are mold resistant (it's a beach environment). We also don't want to get the cheap Sam's Club mattresses that will off gas toxic fumes. We try to use green products to minimize the impact on the environment. We all know they work with certain limitations. Porch boards rot during the season, screens rip. We do the best we can to keep it up during a heavy renting season, but unlike where most of us live normally, there are NO stores or Home Depot's just around the corner, so the level of response is sometimes slower than it would be back on the mainland. I invite people to go out and see the house (or the video) before booking because I take seriously the positive experience of my guests. But you also need to keep your expectations in check! Years and years of fantastic experiences from renters, from single folks to college friends to families with small kids to retirees. This house is really unique and folks from all over the world have stayed here. If your friends would characterize you as uptight and extremely particular (and unable to be cured by some serious relaxing beach time) please don't rent this house! If , however, you are cool and relaxed and realistic, please come and enjoy the hell out of a great house right near the beach. Out the front steps to the right for a 2 minute walk is a private dock where you can catch a blood red sunset before heading back to dinner. I am apologizing for complicated pricing scheme. It confused me too. In short, here's the deal: I rent by the week in the high season (July and Aug). I need to net $3950. Airbnb adds their commish. Pre and post season Iower the price from $3950 and don't require a full week rental. Typically, July and Aug weekends (Fri to Sun) would run $2600 if they are available and it makes sense to me to do it. Airbnb doesn't have the flexibility to handle this type of pricing model so I'm in a position of either putting in a lower rate to reflect a daily price based on a week (and confusing folks when they only want 2 days and it's much higher than they saw) OR putting in the weekend rate ($1300/ night) and scaring week renters away with a ridiculously high week price. Sorry for the confusion! Here's a summary, I think: Summer weeks are $3950 (Fri to Fri) Summer weekends are $2600 (Fri to Sun) Summer midweeks are $2600 (Mon-Fri) pre /post season weekends are $(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) (Fri to Sun) Pre post season nights are $600-$750 Have I totally confused ya? Sorry if so!. Guest AccessThe beach 24/7! Bay 24/7 Interaction with GuestsNone! The NeighborhoodIt's a quiet neighborhood. The house is less than a minute to the ocean and you can hear it all night! So awesome. It's a special, unique place designed in the 60's to support entertaining! It's sort of bare bones in terms of what we supply, but that helps keep the cost down. The full list of what we supply and what you should bring is in the contract you get when you book. Happy to share some of that before hand if you want. Getting AroundLIRR to Bay Shore (1 hr? from NYC). 5 minute cab to the ferry dock. Dreamy ferry ride over to KISMET (20 minutes). Ferries run late during the summer. Other Things to NoteHi! So as you can imagine, we get lots of people looking to book their summer getaways early. We have a pretty strict no refund cancellation policy so we don't get left at the last minute with no renters but having turned away many folks. PLEASE make super sure you are in before you book!

The SpaceIf you've visited Fair Harbor, you know the big yellow house next to the post office. And if you have been to Fair Harbor with kids, you know that they dream of being right in town! Our kids love being right in town -- they love the freedom of running in a pack to get ice cream or pizza or candy, or to look for hermit crabs at the bay. You can rent the whole house for your family or group of families. Or if you are on a budget, take just one or two rooms and share -- there are always other kids around with this share, so there is always a way to feel independent while vacationing as a family. Guest AccessIf you are looking for a fancy house and lots of privacy and a queen-sized bed all to yourself, this is not the place for you! Each family at The Big Yellow House usually rents just one room, sharing the two twin beds by pushing them together, or by adding an air mattress brought from home. It's simple and it's not the roomiest place you'll ever stay, but it's in Fair Harbor at an unbeatable price! Your family will have a private bedroom with two twin beds, sheets and towels supplied. (You can bring an air mattress if you want more sleeping surface!) You'll have full access to the kitchen, with space in the fridge and cabinets set aside just for your stuff, a big living room, a dining room, two shared bathrooms, outdoor shower and huge deck for outdoor dining. Most families who stay here end up eating semi-together, taking turns at the stove and sometimes even sharing dishes. More often than not, the kids band together to paint seashells, and everyone wanders over to the dock for sunset, grown-ups with grown-up drinks in hand. Sometimes families go to the beach together, and sometimes everyone does his/her own thing. And don't forget Wednesday night movies at the fire house! Rainy days are still fun -- those mean Sea Girt library or stay at home to use the years-collected movies, puzzles and games. Interaction with GuestsIf you rent this whole house, you won't need to interact with anyone but the person from whom you borrow kids' sunblock at the beach! If you want to just rent one room, see our other listings. In that case, guests interact with each other a lot. You are taking just one bedroom in a four-bedroom house, unless you decide to rent more than one. But on the other hand, you can completely do your own thing and no one will mind!

And that's why Fair Harbor is a paradise for families. Your kid can run around without any worry about cars or nefarious doings. There's just one restaurant, just one pizza shop, one place to get ice cream and candy, one wine shop and one grocery store. Deliveries from Long Island fish shops and grocery stores are also available. Getting AroundEveryone bikes and walks everywhere! Take a ferry over. Spring for a water taxi to visit other towns if you're feeling too lazy to bike! Other Things to NoteWe do offer shorter stays of just two nights starting three weeks before an open date -- until that point, we have a minimum stay of five nights. The SpaceHouse in Fair Harbor, Fire Island Fair Harbor is a quiet town on Fire Island on a very narrow strip of land between ocean and bay (equivalent of 2 city blocks wide). This house rental is suitable for those looking for a quiet retreat by the sea. House is light, airy, and comfortable, with all basic creature comforts for a nice beach vacation! House fully equipped with: recently renovated kitchen, spacious wood back deck with outdoor gas grill, laundry & storage shed, bicycles, beach chairs and umbrellas, DTV, DVD, and WIFI. Dock to play music for use with iPhones, smart phones, etc. Large enclosed outdoor shower with changing area inside - showering under open sky -- it's a Fire Island specialty - and a real treat! (there's an indoor shower too). Overhead fans in each room and very good cross-ventilation throughout the house! Good screens too! Staples provided including all towels and linens, paper goods, soaps, cooking spices, extra virgin olive oil, etc. Fair Harbor is a serene, picturesque tiny friendly seaside town with no cars! Super family-friendly - there is even a special "baby beach" on the bay complete with lifeguard. Take a stroll on the beach in your pajamas -- yes, it's that casual in Fire Island and island is 34 miles long so you can stroll as far as you like. Like going to Cape Cod but it's so much closer. It's really hard to believe that this place is so close to New York City. On a clear day the ocean is as blue as it is in Miami Beach! Forbes magazine article March 2012 listed Fire Island as one of world's prettiest places! If you don't want to cook there is a very good restaurant overlooking the bay for lunches or dinners out - watching the sunset from there with a glass of wine is quite nice. You can also walk or bicycle to the Fire Island Lighthouse, and towns of Kismet and Saltaire. Kismet has 2 restaurants and bars. Ocean Beach is 1/2 hour walk down beach or a few minutes by water taxi. Easy access from NYC takes under 1 1/2 hours to the Fire Island Ferry by LIRR train, car, or van service to Bay Shore, Long Island. (Note: there is shuttle van from railroad station to ferry terminal) Ferry takes 25 minutes, sometimes a bit longer if it stops at another town. Weekends are Friday 4pm - Sunday 7 pm, Weekdays are Monday 10 a.m. - Friday 4 pm. Please note that in specs it says there are 7 beds - in fact all beds are singles which are easily pushed together into king size, and there are foam pads to make them comfortable. Dog OK The NeighborhoodQuiet and friendly Other Things to NotePlease note that as relaxed a place it is, the houses are quite close together and loud music and loud noise are not appreciated by neighbors. This is a rental suitable for people looking for rest and relaxation. If partying is an important part of your weekend plan, you are better off in the Fire Island towns of Kismet, Ocean Beach, or Ocean Bay Park.

Take a train or car to Bay Shore, then enjoy the short ferry over. Spring for a water taxi to visit other towns if you're feeling too lazy to bike! Other Things to Notetowns if you're feeling too lazy to bike! We do offer shorter stays of just two nights starting three weeks before an open date -- until that point, we have a minimum stay of five nights. This rental is not for everyone -- it's a homey, communal place to lay your head and maybe make some family friends. Make sure you understand the sharing nature of The Big Yellow House before you commit!

The SpaceOur house has 4 bedrooms downstairs, each with two movable twin platform beds which can be configured as two twins or one king, a ceiling fan, and two windows, so they are airy, cool and comfortable. There’s a full bathroom downstairs and a newly built enclosed outdoor shower on the back deck, as well as a huge shed to hold beach chairs, bikes, etc. Upstairs is a living/dining area, kitchen and a half bath. The upstairs deck, overlooking the ocean, has a picnic table, a large new Weber grill, and several large market umbrellas and chairs. The beach is in front of the house next door. The interior is painted white—it’s clean and bright and the floors are new throughout. It is a comfortable, slightly rustic, well-maintained house in the best location with friendly neighbors. The house is high up on the walk so we have virtually no mosquitoes, since there's no stagnant water below. It stays comfortable inside with cross breezes throughout. The house has a washer and dryer in a shed on the back deck, and a new kitchen with electric range, dishwasher, coffeemaker and microwave oven. In the living area are TV, DVD/VHS player and mp3 player, and WiFi. We have beach toys, chairs and umbrellas, five adult beach cruiser bikes with baskets for shopping trips to the store (about a minute’s ride way) and a large red wagon. All linens are included, as well as a Pack ’n Play, two folding bed rails, 2 potty seats, 2 step stools, a booster seat and a clip-on baby seat for the dining table. There's a 3' high railing around both decks. Our upstairs deck is ablaze in color, with planted window boxes, hibiscus, Mandevilla and various other plants (if you look carefully you'll find our basil and other edibles). Arrival time is Monday 10 AM, and the house is yours until 4 PM on Friday. The house cleaner comes at that time and does two loads of laundry in addition to cleaning the house (we ask that you wash sheets in advance of your departure due to time constraints). We hold a $400 security deposit (refundable within 30 days) to cover any damages, and we use a sublease contract for all of our rentals. You're welcome to use the washing machine and dryer, of course, as well as the kitchen staples—our philosophy is "mi casa es su casa" when you’re there. The house is stocked with all necessities except diapers and personal care items. Guest AccessIt's all yours! Interaction with GuestsWe are always available to answer any questions and resolve any problems that may arise. We won't be there to welcome you in person but we're just a phone call away! The NeighborhoodFair Harbor is a wonderful family-oriented community known as “the Barefoot Community.” It’s casual and safe, fun for kids, and has a lovely bay beach at the other end of our walk with lifeguard supervision. The ocean is spectacular, the beach is uncrowded, the “downtown”' is small and friendly. A food store, a general store, restaurant, liquor shop, pizza place and ice cream/candy shop constitute the Central Business District of Fair Harbor, as well as the Firehouse, where there are evening activities during the week. There are plenty of teenagers around for babysitting if you need a break. You can walk to the Lighthouse west of Kismet and climb to the top for spectacular views, watch kid movies on Wednesday night at the Firehouse, play basketball in nearby Saltaire, tennis in Dunewood, take a water taxi to Ocean Beach for a selection of restaurants or go further east to the Sunken Forest for a long hike. The peace and quiet of Fair Harbor are wonderful, making it a great place to just relax with your family. It’s safe for small children to navigate with friends, and neighbors will gladly look after them on the beach if you need to run to the house for a minute. We love Fair Harbor and know you will, too. Getting AroundWe're a quick walk from the ferry and "downtown" Fair Harbor, and the beach is in front of the house next to ours. It doesn't get much better! Fair Harbor is easily accessed by LIRR to Bay Shore and a half-hour ferry ride. We have five bikes for getting around Fair Harbor and a wagon to bring your stuff to and from the house and beach. Other Things to Note• The house is available for the full Monday-Friday midweek period from July 20 - 24. Arrival is 10AM Monday morning and departure is 4PM on Friday. It is not available for individual days/nights during that week. • From June 29 - July 2, arrival time is 10AM Monday and departure is 4PM Thursday. • From Sept. 8 - 11, arrival time is 10AM Tuesday and departure is 4PM Friday.
