The Space1200 sq. ft. almost renovated farmhouse in the country suburbs sits on 1.5 acres, close to downtown Lewiston/Auburn (3 miles), and a hop skip and a jump to Portland (35 min), Freeport (25 min) , Brunswick (20 min) and western Maine. Ideal for visitors to Bates College, CMMC, or St. Mary's. Nestled between Durham and New Gloucester, easy access to the turnpike or Rt. 136 (river road) to 295, or you can also toodle along country roads.
The house has three bedrooms: a master bedroom with adjacent bathroom, guest room that sleeps two, and a futon available for a third room that I use as a studio. One very comfy couch and I can round up some air beds for those happy to sleep wherever. Or if you're adventurous pitch a tent in the yard.
The house is an artist's work in progress rebuilt with green / recycled materials and a passive solar heating design. I try to leave a small carbon footprint and have home made or eco friendly products, recycle and compost like crazy.
The house is is not 100% complete - only one bathroom (no shower) and as you will from the photos all the inside details are not done yet. However, it is quiet, cozy and full of beautiful natural light.
If there are a group of people, you have to be okay with sharing - the downstairs is an open plan, and the only bathroom is in the master bedroom. There is no shower but you can have a luxurious candle lit soak in the claw foot tub with bath salts and an array of essential oils to choose from.
Sleeps 4-6 comfortably. It's perfectly located to explore the lakes, State parks and farms that are Maine's best kept secrets. It's about an hour drive from Sunday River for the ski enthusiasts.
Linens, full on kitchen, picnic + beach blanket provided. I'm often making things so there is usually a home cooked meal or bread waiting for your arrival. I encourage you to help yourself to whatever is in the fridge or pantry.
The house is filled with an eclectic collection of contemporary art, a record collection, film cameras to play with, at least one working super 8 projector, and of course WIFI. I have a few yard games, board games, as well as a pack and play, some toys and books for the young ones. Clothes washer and sunshine / rack dryer.
Two day minimum, but I'm flexible especially in the off season. Dogs are welcome, but please add them as an additional guest when booking.
I'm happy to help in anyway I can and if I'm in town be available when needed. I've lived in Maine for over 20 years and can recommend places to see and help plan day trips. My specialties are art, food and thrift stores. Guest AccessBasic cooking essentials like olive oil, baking supplies, herbs, condiments, and of course Maine honey + maple syrup are available. Interaction with GuestsI usually check in via text and am available if you need more assistance. The NeighborhoodDepending on the season, you can pick cherries, strawberries, blackberries and assortment of herbs and whatever happens to be growing in the vegetable garden. BBQ on the back deck or sit by a campfire. In the fall, leaf peeping and apple picking are close by. In the winter enjoy cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating or stop on your way to one of the close by mountains.
The cities of the Androscoggin (Lewiston / Auburn) were known for their booming textile + shoe industry (Bass, Cole Haan, Dexter). The working class history makes it authentic and the opposite of a tourist destination. However downtown is being revitalized, and the millions of sq. feet of mill space are being repurposed for small businesses. The heritage of many residents is French Canadian and more recently an influx African refugees. You will see French bakeries side by side with Hallal stores.
Getting AroundThere is plenty of parking, but not really any public transportation. Other Things to NoteYou will love staying here if you are an artist or creative type, love to cook, are a good traveler and explorer. You will like staying here if you just want a place to crash that isn't go to break the bank. You will not enjoy it here if you rely on TV for entertainment, cook with a microwave or need a dishwasher.
