Close to the city but a million miles away! Backing on to Kauri Park (a forest) you can be at peace and be with nature. The apartment is approximately 70m2 (750sq ft) and is in the downstairs (ground floor) part of the house with the host family living upstairs. So, you can have your own space or, if you like, you can socialise with us. There is usually someone around who can help you if you need help with anything. Even though our place is somewhere to get away from the hustle-and-bustle it's still reasonably close to downtown Auckland and there are also some local conveniences nearby. The best of both worlds really! Guests have their own separate entrance. The apartment has a kitchen with fridge/freezer, dual hot-plates, electric frypan, convection microwave and dishwasher. There's even an espresso coffee machine, rice cooker, blender and fruit juicer! There are two large bedrooms, each with very comfortable Queen-size beds. The sofa in the lounge pulls out to a double-size sofa-bed. There is also a portacot (which can be configured as a bassinet) and a high-chair (optional extras). Broadband internet is included and available via Wi-Fi. We have uncapped fiber UFB (ultra-fast broadband) and the apartment has it's own wireless access point. The main bedroom has a 24" TV with built-in DVD player and Apple TV for Netflix US and the 2nd bedroom has a 22" TV. In the lounge is a 32" TV with PS3 and Netflix US as well as a selection of DVDs. Outside is a small covered deck with outdoor furniture and a barbeque overlooking a large backyard which backs on to a forest. It's not unusual to see and hear the local wildlife. Kauri Road is a no-exit street so there's not a lot of traffic. Very close to the house is Fernglen Gardens and some nice forest treks. It's also not far to go to a nice cafe and a short drive to many restaurants and other cafes or shopping. Bus stops are not far away. An off-street car park is available. Taxi fare is only around $NZ 25 to the city. Note: Although you can book stays of less than four nights, prices are based on a minimum stay of four nights. Once you pass the BP service station and New World supermarket, look for Kauri Road (2nd) on the left. If you get to the Mobil service station you've gone a little too far. We have an off-street car park available for you.Auckland has made it into Lonely Planet's 2014 top ten cities to visit. The SpaceTwo bedroom upper floor of a character home which has evolved over the years from a 1940's bach. The original floor plan can be seen in the beautiful, wide, Kauri, Rimu and Matai floor boards which grace the central area of the house. A deck runs all around the north facing (sunny) side of the house, connecting the kitchen deck with the deck off the lounge. The kitchen has a cosy alcove with a cute little 50's diner style table. Each deck also has a table and chairs, allowing lots of choice for dining and relaxing. There is a well stocked superette at the top of the road, and a boutique Thai takeaway! A larger supermarket is less than 5 km away. Verrans Corner is a comfortable walk away, with a superb café. Nearby Birkenhead has a great selection of restaurants too. Our local beach is tidal, but I find I can always get a swim in, and there is a good three hour window of swimming around each high tide. Otherwise, the nearby East Coast beaches of Takapuna, Milford, Mairangi Bay etc, have all day swimming and wonderful beach walks. Ferries depart from Beachhaven wharf, Birkenhead wharf, Northcote wharf and Devonport. Please note: During the peak holiday periods I prefer a minimum seven day booking unless your booking is filling gaps between pre-existing bookings. At other times, a minimum three day booking please. Guest Access1 double, 1 single bedroom, and a daybed in the living room. Stunning views of the Waitemata Harbour. Two large sunny decks, one semi-enclosed, both with gorgeous views. Cute kitchen, with kitchen dining, flowing outside onto deck. Two seating areas in the living room. Interaction with GuestsI reside downstairs and both living areas are self contained so there is friendly interaction and I am available if you should need any assistance, however the contact is not intrusive. Please note, there could be cooking aromas drifting upstairs. I cook quite a bit with garlic, and ethnic flavours. If you think you might not like this, please look elsewhere for your accommodation. I have only had one complaint, but it highlighted that there might be an issue for some people. The NeighborhoodThis is a great neighbourhood with lots of green areas, and therefore lots of local native bird life - Tui, Kereru, Morepork, Kingfisher, are often on the property. The people in this area are very friendly, will smile and say hello when you meet them on the street. The wharf only two minutes walk away often has locals throwing a line in to catch some fish! There is a well stocked superette (general store) at the top of the road, and a soon to be opened Thai takeaway. Getting AroundThere are buses at the top of the road, and a ferry service from Beachhaven wharf, which is about 4 km away. Other Things to NoteThe house has a piano which you are welcome to use. I am a qualified Physiotherapist and massage therapist with 25+ years of experience. You may be able to book a massage at some point during your stay, if you wish. The property has a clinic on site! Subject to availability so I recommend arranging your bookings prior to your stay, if you would like this service. Please also note, there could be cooking aromas drifting upstairs. I cook quite a bit with garlic, and ethnic flavours. If you think you might not like this, please look elsewhere for your accommodation.
