The SpaceThis is a mid-century house that features a unique contemporary design and is set deep in the woods. When you are in the living room and solarium looking out the plate glass picture windows toward the Berkshires, you will feel like you're in a treehouse. The house is decorated for the most part according to mid-century aesthetic principles.
Located equidistant from NYC and Boston, this home makes the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle, whether for a weekend, a full week or longer.
The house is approximately 2,500 square feet and can accommodate up to 8 guests. It features 4 bedrooms and an additional sleeping loft with its own second mini kitchen. There are 3 bathrooms (1 full and 2 3/4). The Sleeping accommodations are as follows: MBR - Queen bed, Guest Room #1 - Queen bed, Guest Room #2 - Full size bed + twin bunk beds, Kids Room - Full size bed + crib, Sleeping Loft - full size futon sofa bed. There is also a Queen size inflatable mattress available for use.
It's an upside down house, which means the master bedroom and the kids bedroom are on the lower level, and the living room and kitchen are on the upper level. This design maximizes the views from the living and dining areas which place you right up in the trees. The house is on a hill, so you enter the house over a land bridge on the upper level, but also have a door leading from the master bedroom to the back yard on the lower level.
The house was remodeled in 2014/early 2015 and features hardwood floors, a vaulted ceiling in the living room, 2 fireplaces, a baby grand piano, a sun-filled solarium, family room with 55" LED SmartTV, gardens with outdoor pergola seating area, 2 outdoor decks, a master bedroom with a glass door opening to the outdoors, a children's room with 1 full sixe bed and 1 crib, guest room #1 with Queen bed, and guest room #2 with full sized bed and twin bunk beds. The house has a wi-fi + Airplay enabled stereo system with built-in speakers throughout the house. High speed wi-fi internet is included. Washer and Dryer. There is a seasonal stream on the property, and lots of great hiking trails within a few minutes drive. There is a Weber 3-burner gas grill on the deck that overlooks the gardens, and an outdoor eating table for summer BBQs.
The house is located on Fog Hill about 8 miles outside the hamlet of Austerlitz, NY in Columbia County. It's in the Berkshire foothills (sometimes referred to as the Taconic Hills in NY), and lies at an altitude over 1,500ft., which makes it naturally air conditioned in the summer.
The kitchen is stocked with pots, pans, dishes, glasses, utensils, small and large appliances, and pretty much anything you will need to make your meals. There's an excellent supermarket in neighboring Chatham, called The Price Chopper, which has an enormous selection of local and organic produce and meat, as well as all the other staples. There are also dozens of local farm stands in the area where you can buy seasonal produce directly from area farmers. Guest AccessYou will have access to the full residence, featuring 4 bedrooms, a sleeping loft, solarium, living room, family room, 3 bathrooms, 2 decks, outdoor balcony, lawn, gardens, outdoor eating area and 4 acres of wooded property including a seasonal stream. Interaction with GuestsYou will have the house to yourselves, and most likely we won't meet face to face, but we'll still consider you family! The NeighborhoodThe house is located on a dead end dirt road shared by only two other houses. The best thing about being out in the woods is all the wildlife!
To the east, the neighboring town is West Stockbridge, MA -- the site of Alice's Restaurant and the Arlo Guthrie Foundation church (3 miles away). Go a little further and you'll be in Lenox, MA -- home to Tanglewood, the summer residence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It's a short drive to all major Berkshires attraction, including Jacob's Pillow, Mt. Greylock and Great Barrington. To our west is the Hudson Valley, a vibrant and thriving community of organic farmers, artists, antiques dealers and winemakers. The town of Hudson (25 minutes away) has been called the "new Williamsburg" because so many artisans have fled the overpriced burg in Brooklyn and set up workshops and stores on the historic Warren Street in Hudson. If you like antique stores, French cafes and gourmet dining, there's a lot to explore. There are dozens of state parks within a 45 minute radius that offer hiking, swimming, boating, mountaineering, fishing and more. Getting AroundYou'll need a car to get around the area.
