The SpaceNestled among the hardwood forest of Columbia County this secluded, handcrafted cabin offers tranquility within reach of all the Columbia-Berkshire attractions. Hand built by a local family from locally sourced pine and bluestone this 1,500 square foot cabin in the perfect place to rest and recharge among the birch trees. The 2 acre property is 2.5 miles from a paved road and a few minutes walk from state forest land - ideal if you want to immerse yourself in nature for a few precious days and forget the sounds of city life. Deer, squirrels, raccoons, hawks and owls frequent the property. You may even see a bobcat or hear the coyotes in the distance. The large, screened porch perched among the branches looking towards the sun setting over the Catskills encourages hours spent taking in the birdsong as the light changes. Birch Cabin can sleep up to 4 people but is most comfortable for 2. A queen bed in the loft provides cool, summer sleeping under the open skylight and a queen sized sleeper-sofa in the den can accomodate guests or children. The large screened porch is furnished with a hand built pine picnic table and Adirondack style chairs for summer dining. From the porch you can easily access the large outdoor fire pit, the den, loft or the main room. In the summer, the porch usually becomes the most used room in the house. In cooler weather the large indoor dining table can easily accomodate 6-8 while basking in the warmth of the wood stove. The well stocked kitchen has everything you need to create all your own meals including a modern 5-burner gas cooking stove and cast-iron and copper cookware. In cooler weather the wood stove heats the cabin - there is always a good supply of seasoned wood for burning. When you feel like a walk just open up the door and head out. Miles of dirt road surround the cabin so you can walk for hours and usually come across very few cars. You can walk or take a short drive to 2 state forests within a couple of miles of Birch Cabin that offer wonderful hiking trails, mountain top views and a pond for canoeing. With a little more driving you can access the Appalachian Trail and numerous other parks, state forest and trails along the New York - Massachusetts border. When you are ready to head into town you can drive to Chatham (NY) in 10 minutes, Hudson (NY), Great Barrington (MA) and Lennox (MA) in 25 minites. These towns offer local, organic groceries, a great selection of restaurants, movie theaters and antique and gift shops. In 45 minutes you can be in Albany or Rhinebeck NY. The drive from NYC usually takes about 2.5 hours.

The SpaceOriginally built by artist caretakers for a Manhattan horticulturist, the cottage has its own private driveway. It's spacious: 550 sq. ft. with a large bedroom/ sitting room, separate full kitchen and sky- lit bath. There's a queen size bed, reading and dining areas, a smattering of antiques along with Cable TV, DVD, A CD player, WiFi, air conditioning and heat. It is comfortable and well equipped. From a picture window where the table is placed, you can look over the gardens to the swimming pond...a glorious view all year round. In summer, you can hear the stream trickling from the small front deck. Or step out the back to a private shade garden with chaise lounges for reading, a propane grill ,table and chairs for outdoor dining. A gazebo cantilevered over the water is for your use alone. Perfect for yoga, reading and relaxing, a glass of wine before dinner. There is also a dock from which to swim or canoe. The pond itself is spring fed , about an acre in size, over 20 feet deep.... clear and lovely for swimming. The cottage is heaven sent for an individual or couple who wants to relax in a natural retreat yet still have access to all this popular tourist area offers. Guestsgarden has been a successful business for over 15 years....catering to people who love the pastoral beauty and rich cultural life of the Berkshires and Columbia County. Sorry no pets, no smoking. Occupancy two adults, unless special arrangements (fee) made in advance for a guest. Guest AccessThe gardens, streams, and swimming pond are yours to share. The gazebo is for you alone. Enjoy the best of the Berkshires and Columbia Country. Once part of Massachusetts , the cottage is on the border of Austerlitz, NY and Alford, Mass. 11 minutes to Chatham, NY and West Stockbridge , Mass. Only 18 minutes to Great Barrington, MA and Tanglewood in Lenox. Less than half an hour to the towns of Stockbridge and Lenox Mass, as well as Hudson,NY. There are ski slopes nearby, golf and tennis, hiking, biking; fine restaurants, theaters, films, concerts. Museums, historic homes, antiques, festivals, farmers' markets, wineries and distilleries, celebrity sightings...and so much more. Interaction with GuestsI am usually at home and available to guests. My guidebook acts as concierge but I am happy to help you make decisions as well. There is a manager on call or the rare occasion I am away. The guidebook is in the cottage with info on appliances, how it all works. plus recommendations for where to shop, indulge your particular food preferences, dine out and more. I try to be the guardian of your privacy in the cottage. During weekdays it is possible that a mower or gardener may come close to the cottage. If a contractor is coming, I will attempt to reach you by email or phone to give you a heads up. Otherwise, it's safe to keep your picture window shade up. Relax and enjoy the spectacular view. The NeighborhoodThe hamlet is rural . We are pleased that our road is now paved, a blessing in winter. It's the country, although journalists tout it the New Hamptons and we have our fair share of celebrities. There's a general store that serves and sells food 5 minutes away, a volunteer fire department is at the foot of the street, and across from that , a shed like post office. It is surrounded by six diverse and wonderful historical towns less than a half hour away so it's easy to get to the bright lights. Nearest supermarket: 11 minutes. Spencertown General Store, 5 minutes. Getting AroundUnless doing a retreat, it is necessary to have a car. Albany airport is 50 minutes away. Train stop for Amtrak in Hudson, NY. Car rental available there. Other Things to NoteI have not listed a minimum stay as it varies. Usually it's 2 night minimum. Holidays may be more. Tip: longer stays and returning guests, of which there are many, may be offered better rates. I am happy to take phone calls with questions. The cottage is in the country and not immune to power outages, critters, and other such country things. Since we are underpopulated, we fall between cell phone towers. Guests' can set their iphones to text and email with our wifi setting but usually (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) or use the cottage landline phone for "face time." Most guests report increased relaxation with this situation and wouldn't change a thing. However, if you must access your info, a laptop or ipad is the way to go.

The SpaceThis is a mid-century house that features a unique contemporary design and is set deep in the woods. This space is perfect for a couple, or a small family of 4. It will also work for two couples, if one couple is ok sleeping in the loft (there's less privacy because it doubles as the common space, and is open to the rest of the space). Located equidistant from NYC and Boston, this home makes the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle, whether for a weekend, a full week or longer. There is a seasonal stream on the property, and lots of great hiking trails within a few minutes drive. The house is located on Fog Hill -- about 8 miles outside the hamlet of Austerlitz, NY in Columbia County. It's in the Berkshire foothills, and lies at an altitude over 1,500ft. You will be staying in an in-law apartment that is physically attached to the main house, but has its own private entrance. Once inside, you will have complete privacy in your space, which includes a bedroom with a double bed and twin bunkbeds, a sleeping loft with double bed and a private 3/4 bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. The sleeping loft -- accessible by a spiral staircase -- doubles as a common space and has a kitchenette, breakfast nook with 4-seat table and a SmartTV connected to the internet for all your video streaming needs. The kitchenette is stocked with pots, pans, dishes, glasses, utensils, refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker (12-cup drip), tea kettle, and pretty much anything you will need to make your meals. There's an excellent supermarket in neighboring Chatham, called The Price Chopper, which has an enormous selection of local and organic produce and meat, as well as all the other staples. There are also dozens of local farm stands in the area where you can buy seasonal produce directly from area farmers. High speed wi-fi internet is included. Guest AccessYou will have your own private in-law apartment attached to the main house. You'll also have your own private deck and access to the grounds which includes some great hikes and x-country skiing. Interaction with GuestsMost likely, our interactions will be online. There's a chance we'll see each other on site if we're going to our cars at the same time, but in general you can expect to be given complete privacy. We're also happy to help with suggestions of things to do in the area, or if you have questions about the place. The NeighborhoodThe house is located on a dead end dirt road shared by only two other houses. The best thing about being out in the woods is all the wildlife! To the east, the neighboring town is West Stockbridge, MA -- the site of Alice's Restaurant and the Arlo Guthrie Foundation church (3 miles away). To our west is the Hudson Valley, a vibrant and thriving community of organic farmers, artists, antiques dealers and winemakers. The SpaceYou'll find Millamore at the end of a 1000 ft private drive. This is a secluded, sunny, warm, natural & open home. The interior is loaded with oak mortise & tenon beams and naturally worn wide plank pine floors. The home is charming and comfy and very much connected to the outdoors with wonderful views. Through sliding glass doors you can reach the outdoor space,"The Dorch", kind of a combo deck/porch that wraps around the front and side of the home. It's got great weathered teak furniture, beautiful flowers and plants (that's seasonal-it gets COLD up here) loads of space to hang and a nice Weber grill. The first floor is spacious and open with a very cozy area around the wood stove. There's a very nice kitchen as well and a lovely, large dining area with a massive 6 foot circular table and nearby game table. The property is gorgeous, approx. 6 acres, much of it wooded, with a deep and spring fed pond, yes you can swim or fish in it when it's appropriate, but please don't let unattended young kids near it. The bedrooms are super comfy, with King & Queen Size Beds, Lots of Closet Space, Day Beds w/ Trundle, more pillows than you can possibly use, and luxurious high-end deep mattresses (people conk out in there for hours and many of our city friends have told us it's the best sleep they have had in years). Guest AccessYou can use almost the entire home, save for the Garage & Studio building. If you're a skier, there is a partially finished large lower level and it's a great place to dump the gear and hang the coats, there is also a family room down there with theatre chairs and a large flat screen with Netflix, a Wii & Xbox, and an input for Mac computers. The house has open wi-fi. There is no cable or satellite TV. Interaction with GuestsI will generally be available for any issues or questions, as I have a second home about a mile away. I love telling people about the area and facilitating their good time. We have a handyman, should there be any need, on the adjacent property, which is an amazing off the grid natural farm you can generally visit. The NeighborhoodMillamore borders "Old Austerlitz" a fantastic historical village comprised of some of the areas oldest structures which have been lovingly rebuilt over the years. There are many wonderful events during the year that are family friendly. We're directly accessible to all the fantastic Berkshire attractions( 15 minutes from Tanglewood and Kripalu). 10 minutes to Chatham and Hillsdale, 25 minutes from Hudson. Three ski areas are close by, Catamount and Butternut within 20 minutes or so and Jiminy Peak about 30. It's a truly wonderful place to live. Price Chopper in Chatham is a short drive and Guido's, a High End Grocery in Great Barrington is about 20 minutes. Getting AroundThere is plenty of space to park your car, and we're directly off route 22, so you can get where you're going really fast- route 90 is only 5 miles away. There is no public transportation and again, the weather gets severe up here, so it is totally possible to get snowed in until our plow guy gets here, If you have choices in vehicles, something with 4 wheel drive is your best bet. Other Things to NoteThe terrain here is rough and natural, it is not friendly to the elderly or infirm. This is not a handicap accessible property. Couples with very small kids or well behaved supervised children will have a great time. I have a large Golden Retriever, and though we do our best to keep everything as clean as possible, people with dog allergies should be aware of that. I love dogs, but we can't allow any pets, sorry.
