We provide puzzles, an extensive library for readers of all ages, board games and a Wii sports for indoor entertainment – just in case of rain. We understand that for many, your pet is a part of your family so we invite you to bring your canine family member with you as well as your indoor cat. Your four legged family members are welcome with a completed pet application, our prior approval and a mere $50 pet fee. There is a small fenced area in the back where your dog can play off leash. We believe that time away is for reconnecting, renewing relationships, creating memories with family and loved ones. We do not have cable (it isn't available here) or satellite TV (it would raise your rates far too much). But we do understand that sometimes, relaxing in front of the TV together may be just what you need. So, we provide you with an extensive library of VHS and DVDs and unlimited access to NetFlix. Just turn on the TV and the Wii, click on NetFlix and select the shows you want to watch. Unplugging from the hectic work world is an important piece of relaxing. Still, there are times when you may want to connect with family or really need to touch base with work. We have wireless internet throughout the house that is significantly faster than dial up – but may not be as high speed as you are used to in the big city. Of course, being in the country, we cannot guarantee that it will always be working due to downed lines, and other technical issues beyond our control. If you must get online, our public library (downtown Bakersville) has a dependable server for your convenience. The ladies there will be more than happy to assist you. Cell phone reception is sometimes spotty, depending on which service you use and the weather. We provide a landline that is free to you for local and unlimited U.S. long distance calls during your stay. We want your vacation to be memorable, magical and magnificent. If you are ready to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, want to explore the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, meet talented artisans, make new friends, have new adventures, or just relax and unwind, Pura Vida Cottage is the perfect place for you. Do you enjoy horses peacefully grazing nearby & giving them treats? Or would you enjoy a ride in a safe, controlled setting? We will introduce you to our Miss Penny and Ellie. A little farther up the road, you may get to see one of the mama cows with her new born calf in the pasture. Watch out for the deer and wild turkey crossing the road, especially if you are driving at dusk or dawn. The split rail fence will let you know that you have arrived. You may even decide to purchase a unique piece of art to take home with you. Western North Carolina is home to majestic mountains and magnificent people. Part of the Appalachian Mountains that extend from Canada all the way down to Alabama, the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina are where the chain's loftiest peaks kiss the sky. The mountainous region is nestled in the western corner of the state, and is collectively known as "high country." The Blue Ridge Mountains are also home to a dazzling array of plants and wildlife. In fact, by some estimates, this small corner of North Carolina contains more ecological diversity than the entire European continent. Major attractions in the Blue Ridge Mountains include: -The Appalachian Trail: America's famous Appalachian Trail runs through the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering excellent hiking opportunities for nature lovers. -The Blue Ridge Parkway: One of the most scenic drives in the United States, the Blue Ridge Parkway winds through the mountains. -Great Smoky Mountains National Park: One of the best places for camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Great Smoky Mountains National Park spans the North Carolina-Tennessee border and frequently ranks as the most popular national park in the entire United States, drawing millions of visitors throughout the year. This Blue Ridge national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features a carefully preserved ecological biosphere. We will do our best to make sure you have everything you need for your vacation to be magical and memorable.

Beautiful guest house, cantilevered over waterfalls. The home is newly painted and redecorated, with floor to ceiling windows. The windows catch the breezes from the creek. Included in the design are lots of nice touches that make the place feel like a home, rather than a rental, e.g. handmade quilts, sumptuous sheets, carpets and original art throughout. The deck wraps around the house on all four sides, affording magnificent views of the stream and waterfall. You'll love that the home is fully outfitted with all kitchen and bath supplies, with lots of expendables provided.....all paper products, aluminum foil, Saran wrap, all soaps, shampoos, bath oils, sponges, spices, sugar and flour, assorted teas, etc. Listen to the lovely sounds of the waterfall which will lull you to sleep. Enjoy the numerous board games, the lending library, and a selection of DVD's and CD's. There's a complete selection of pots and pans, as well as plenty of drinking glasses, including cocktail and wine, with two sets of dishes and silverware. The radiant floor heat will keep your toes warm in the winter. Really, a fun and wonderful place to stay. What a great area! Wildflowers in abundance, mountains, waterfalls at every turn in the road. Crime free, friendly. More artists per capita than anywhere else in the US. The Appalachian Trail runs right above the home. All that the Blue Ridge Parkway offers is available, as is snow skiing in the winter months. Raccoons, deer, turkeys, woodchucks and birds abound. The county has 49 of the 50 tallest mountains east of the Mississippi. Zip lining, white water rafting, fishing, hiking, black light tour of the gem mines, hay rides, horseback riding, tubing, cycling, an old gristmill....it's all here. Antiques, art galleries, great restaurants priced for all purses. No traffic. Live music, music, music, and a lot of it for free. Festivals, street dances, and all of it in a safe, friendly atmosphere. It's a great place to relax, or to enjoy a very active vacation.

We enjoy lots of open fields and wooded areas. Wildlife thrives around us: deer, wild turkey, song birds to name a few. Getting AroundYou will need a car to reach the cottage. We are about 90 miles from Asheville, NC airport; and in the other direction the same distance from Johnson City, TN. We do not have public transportation services available in our area. However, in an emergency, Pam and Nancy will help you get to where you need to be. Other Things to NoteThere are many things to do in and around the Bakersville area. The SpaceThe home is a two story, 3,400 square feet log cabin with a tin roof situated on 7 acres of rolling hills with a rocky creek running alongside. You will be greeted by nearly 1,100 square foot of wrap-around covered porch, and a small open deck space, with five gated step entrances leading into the large yard. Rocking chairs and two porch swings make the perfect touch for enjoying coffee in the morning and taking in the sunrise over the mountains, or a glass of wine in the evenings watching the sun disappear. On clear nights, you will have a breathtaking view of the starry sky, and the only sound you will hear is the creek rushing over the rocks! The first level offers an open floor plan featuring a spacious kitchen, dining room, and a sitting area with a couch, two recliners, and a gas log fireplace. The kitchen is fully outfitted with all major appliances as well as some extras – dishwasher, stove, oven, microwave, coffee maker, blender, slow cooker, electric griddle, toaster, steamer, KitcheAid stand mixer with attachments, and a waffle maker. Pots, pans, dinnerware, glassware, cooking utensils, and flatware are also provided. The dining table comfortably seats 4, and there are 4 additional seats at the kitchen counter breakfast area. There are two bedrooms on this level, including the master with private full bath with shower. The second bedroom has a full bath with a claw-foot bathtub and can be accessed from the bedroom or kitchen. A small room off of the kitchen provides a high-efficiency, front-loading washer and dryer and extra storage space. Up the stairs to the second level is a loft with comfortable couch for lounging and two reclining chairs. On either end of the loft are the other two bedrooms, both with private full baths. All of the beds are queens. Linens are provided. Every bedroom has a TV with either VHS and / or DVD. Guest AccessGuests will have access to the entire house and its seven acres. Interaction with GuestsI will be available by phone, text, or e-mail for questions, concerns, and issues. I will be happy to provide more information about the house, towns, things to do, anything you need! The NeighborhoodWhile the house is situated remotely for privacy, the sleepy town of Bakersville is a short and scenic 15 minutes down the mountain. There you will find a locally-owned gallery featuring artwork in various media by students from the Penland School of Crafts nearby, an antique store, a farmers market on Saturdays (not available during the winter), town hall, public library, and a handful of other shops. For limited basic supplies, there is a small locally-owned convenience store called Thomas' Grocery about two miles from the house. Otherwise, there is an Ingles grocery store in Spruce Pine (~25 minutes) or a Wal-Mart (~35 minutes). Just a few miles up the mountain is Carver's Gap on Roan Mountain and a state park full of incredible views and hiking on the Appalachian Trail, open for free to the public. Just past the parking lot is the Tennessee state line! Also in short driving distance is a pay-lake near Thomas' Grocery where you can catch and release bass, and Saylor Orchard where you can buy or pick your own apples and buy fresh-made cider. During the warmer months, enjoy river rafting tours and floating on scenic Toe River at Loafer's Glory Rafting and Tubing (~15 minutes) and golf at Grassy Creek Golf and Country Club (~30 minutes). In Spruce Pine, which is about 25 minutes away, the downtown area features a few restaurants and quaint stores, a coffee shop, and a brewery called Dry County Brewing that serves pizza and other nibbles. A bit further out is a log flume for gem mining and a local winery. Please verify hours and seasonal availability. Other nearby attractions within about an hour's drive: Asheville, Boone, Banner Elk, Sugar and Beech Mountain ski resorts, Hot Springs (one of the only natural hot springs in the Southeast!), Johnson City (TN), Linville Falls, and more! Getting AroundTravel by car, on foot for hikes, or bicycle if you want to brave the steep hills! Other Things to NoteLandline telephone is available for incoming or outgoing calls. Internet is available, but the service may be slow or intermittent depending on the weather. Cell phone service inside the house is generally unreliable or unavailable. A signal on the porch or in the yard is possible, or further up or down the mountain. The driveway is on a hill, and while four-wheel drive is not necessarily required, it may be helpful during the winter months in case of precipitation; the town maintains the public roads via salting and plowing. I recommend leaving the car at the bottom of the driveway if there is snow or ice on the ground, particularly if your vehicle does not have four-wheel drive. The porch area is contained as long as the gates are closed, but the yard is not fenced.

We do not discriminate for ANY reason. Private & quiet, located at 3800 ft in a cove surrounded by hundreds of acres of conservancy land and the Pisgah National Forest. It's cool here when it's roasting in the Piedmont. Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway nearby, trout fishing, beautiful views. Nearby rafting that's suitable for even little kids (or my 86 year old dad). Tastefully appointed with a queen bed, and a small kid-cave loft with a twin-size mattress. We have apple trees, blueberries, a pond with ducks, three Nigerian Dwarf goats, and two creeks. Listen to song birds & owls, look for wild turkey and deer, pet the goats, feed the ducks, sit by a creek & read, etc. The Cabin is fully equipped and well appointed, all the way down to the corkscrew and Starbucks coffee. High speed WiFi internet. HDTV with Roku streaming, a DVD player and an eclectic movie collection. Pets are allowed off leash to run around. I find lots of tennis balls in the creek! Road cycling for the serious bicyclist, from a challenging trip to the top of the Roan to a relatively flat ride along the river. (I'm an avid bicyclist, all are welcome). The Appalachian Trail at Carver's Gap and the Blue Ridge Parkway are 20 miles away. If you're too tired to hike, it's a beautiful drive. This area is known for its artists and Penland School of Craft, the oldest craft school in the country. There are hundreds of artists studios in the area. Bakersville, which is tiny, has two world class galleries, some other small galleries, a traditional goat cheese making operation, and a tailgate farmers’ market on Saturdays. In nearby Spruce Pine there are more galleries, the award-winning farm to table restaurant Knife and Fork (#45 in Southern Living’s 100 best restaurants in the entire South) and classic cocktail bar Spoon. The Pizza Shop & Dry County Brewing Company serves hand tossed pizza and small batch craft beer, and there is a tailgate farmers’ market on Wednesdays. There are various other restaurants in the area most of which are detailed in our welcome book. When you arrive, I make it a point to come up and say 'hello' and tell you all about tasty and delicious things about BirdTown and the area...then I leave you to your privacy. I'm always available in person or electronically; my house is in the front of BirdTown, out of view. We prefer pets be crated if they are left alone in the house. Two large decks with comfortable furniture, outdoor grill and dining area, with an outdoor fire pit enhance the comfort and ambiance of this mountain getaway. Pura Vida Cottage welcomes families with children. Your children can run, play, explore the creeks and just have fun in the large front yard. Close the deck gate and your dog can go and come through the side door's medium size doggie door. The cottage is equipped with everything you need for your stay. You just bring your personal items and food. We will provide you with a list of suggested items you may want to bring with you. You can even make arrangements for special accommodations such as having meals prepared, childcare, elder care, and dog sitting services. They will welcome you to spend time with them during your stay. If you are looking for a horseback adventure, we will help you connect with an excellent guide and trail riding experience. Welcome! You need a car..or a bicycle.
