The NeighborhoodBalmain is a charming 'inner west' suburb of Sydney surrounded by water. The SpaceAn elegant 1865 sandstone hotel converted into a contemporary 3 bedroom home in the waterside suburb of Balmain just a 10 minute bus trip from the heart of the CBD. A private, peaceful and luxurious house that can accommodate up to 7 people. An eclectic collection of objects d'art, paintings and books add to the charm. On the entrance level there are 2 double bedrooms, the main opening onto a small courtyard. A modern mosaic tile bathroom with shower, bath and heated towel rail service these bedrooms. On the same level is a large studio/office with internet connection and a genuine French ‘bebe foot table’ if you wish to re-enact the world cup. This area also has a daybed that can be made up into a single bed creating a 4th bedroom. Upstairs is the open plan living, dining and kitchen with original sandstone walls, pressed metal ceilings and floor boards dating from 1865. Flooded with northern light this charming room opens onto a large covered balcony that runs the width of the house. Enjoy a quiet afternoon on the chinese daybed or in the evenings enjoy an aperitif, dinner or cook up a feast on the BBQ. The modern fully equipped kitchen has an ILVE stove, microwave and dishwasher. A modern bathroom is also located on this level. Or you may prefer to admire the fabulous views of the iconic harbor bridge, city and harbour from the roof garden, perfect for those evening drinks or at anytime of day. There is also a 3rd private double bedroom situated in the loft with a view onto the roof garden. Balmain is a peninsula west of Sydney’s city centre. Originally a working class suburb with a handful of wealthy merchants and industrialists. Its main industry was shipbuilding and repairs which flourished at the beginning of the 1900s. Later Balmain was ‘invaded’ by Bohemian types - mainly writers, artists and academics who preferred the more relaxed character of the place than the eastern suburbs. Balmain has a very long main street (Darling Street) which starts at a ferry wharf with regular services to Circular Quay and Darling Harbour. Arriving from the city, a left turn and a short walk will find you in the Illoura Reserve at Peacock Point, a pleasant spot with views back to the city and the Harbour Bridge. The village of Balmain, which is only a 5 minute walk has a selection of boutiques, bookshops, gourmet food and specialty shops. It also well known for restaurants, cafes and pubs along with a couple of old churches and restored historic buildings. Balmain side streets are very narrow lined with quaint restored workman’s cottages and grand terrace houses. There are several markets close by on a Saturday that sell everything from vintage clothing to farm produce. But Balmain’s main attraction is its atmosphere, pubs, cafes and the chance for some people-watching in a laid-back environment close to the harbour and the city. Several pubs have music on weekends and serve fine meals. It is surrounded by the harbour with many foreshore parks and the perfect location to enjoy the famed Sydney lifestyle. Interaction with GuestsMy guests are free to contact me at anytime during their stay. I always meet them and show them through the house and talk about the facilities of the neighbourhood, public transport and points of general interest and answer any questions they have. The NeighborhoodBalmain had its beginnings as a working class suburb. It has gone through many incarnations over the years from bohemians moving in through the 70's, artists, writers, actors and academics with an influx of families in more recent times. A colourful area which once boasted 40 pubs, now retaining some of these with a mix of cafes, restaurants. A peninsular, surrounded by the harbour on both sides lined by parks, a delight to walk around. Friendly, community inspired, this is why I love this area, not to mention 10 minutes from the centre of the CBD. Getting AroundPublic transport is ideal here, a bus around the corner to the CBD in 10 minutes or take a ferry to Circular Quay or Darling Harbour. I also can provide a visitor's parking permit if required.

The SpaceThe main bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, which creates additional privacy from the second bedroom. The apartment comfortably fits 4 people. Note that the configuration is one queen bed and a bunk bed. The apartment has a TV, DVD player, Wifi, off-street parking spot, a well-equipped kitchen and linen & towels are all provided. You also have access to a wonderful pool complex, which features a 25m lap pool, 2 spas, a gym and a sauna. Guest AccessSwimming pool, spa, sauna, gym, TV Interaction with GuestsIt's likely you won't meet me at all. I tend to leave the key out for my guests so that you can time your own arrival. The NeighborhoodBalmain is one of Sydney's great inner city suburbs. It has a lot of old houses with lots of character, and a stroll over the Balmain peninsula is always a pleasure. We have several great parks and vantage points from where you can see the city. The ferry is always the nicest way to travel into the city, but we are also an easy bus ride away (10 min). Balmain is well known for being full of pubs and restaurants, and becomes a destination in the evenings for entertainment. Whilst the back streets always remain quiet, the highstreet always has a great vibe to it. Plenty of coffee shops for during the day, and great places to eat in the evening. Getting AroundFrom Balmain there are several places you can catch a ferry. The apartment itself is a 5 min walk from a bus stop, from which you can either go into the city or to a ferry wharf. Other Things to NoteThings you need to know about the house; A LIVED IN SPACE You are about to rent my house. This is not a hotel or usually an empty space. You will find my things in the house, my clothes in the cupboards, and my daughters toys in her room. I do everything possible to hide these items from view. If you anticipate to need cupboard space please advise me prior to your stay, as it’s a city apartment with little storage, but I can certainly make sure one or two shelves are empty for your clothes. NOT BABY-PROOF The house is not suitable for very small children. It’s not baby proofed any more as my daughter is 8. Child proofing the house will be a stressful event for you. I suggest to look for a more suitable place in that case. NOISE - CONSTRUCTION There is construction going on next door, which is outside of my control The master bedroom will hear some of the noise (depends on the day) the back room will be nice and quiet still. WELCOMING COMMITTEE You will likely not meet me on arrival. Typically the house is only available because I am away myself. So no reception or welcoming committee will greet you. I will ensure to advise you where to find the keys and you can arrive at your leisure. ASK AWAY If you need anything at all, message me. If you can’t find the coffee plunger, or the parking area, or if you run into any issue at all with the house, please just let me know and I can assist you. I love my home and am proud of it and hope you can help me keep it that way. Please enjoy the pool, the courtyard and the close proximity to the city. Sydney is a great place and I hope my unit is a comfortable place from which to explore.

You can also use the amenities of the building; lap pool, spa, gym and sauna. The room is NOT suitable for more than 2 people. You can interact with me as much or as little as you want. I am happy to provide you with local info and travel tips, should you want any. The NeighborhoodBalmain is one of Sydney's great suburbs. It's a peninsula, and therefore relatively quiet. My apartment is a 10 min bus ride from the city, has great vantage points to enjoy night time views of the CBD, and is only a 7 min walk from the high street, which is full or pubs and restaurants. Balmain is approx 25 min from the famous Sydney beaches by car. Getting AroundBalmain has buses and ferries to take you into different parts of the city. Nearest bus stop from the apartment is a 5 min walk, and ferry terminals can be reached in 15 or 20 minutes on foot too. Other Things to NoteMy daughter stays with me every other weekend. If you still wanna stay during that time, you can have use of the queen bedroom and en-suite bathroom for the same price as the bunk room. But with a lot more privacy. Note this apartment has no TV!

Stunning Sydney Harbour Bridge and city skyline view. 5 Bedrooms, including cosy, self-contained bungalow! Ideal for families, groups, sporting teams etc. Air-conditioned living room with 70 inch TV, Apple TV (including Netflix and Stan) and Chromecast. Sleeps up to 11 people. Back garden and wraparound deck (with 2 BBQs). Child and pet-friendly. Guest AccessGuests will have full access to the property, except for a locked storeroom. The NeighborhoodThe Balmain Peninsula is like an island, directly connected to the heart of the Sydney CBD by ferries and the ANZAC Bridge. It's coast is lined with picturesque beaches and parks, all with spectacular harbour vistas. Formerly a rough dockworkers neighbourhood, it is now one of Sydney's most beautiful suburbs. Within 1-3 minutes walk from home you can find more than 15 highly respectable coffee options. The best chilli margaritas in Sydney are across the road at a Mexican bar called Cantina. Dodgy pubs, classy pubs and lovely English-style pubs are all within walking distance. For self-caterers and keen cooks, the kitchen is smart and functional and Woolworth’s supermarket is 3 minutes’ down the road. Unlike Bondi or Surry Hills, Balmain is not teeming with tourists, and most of the people in the ‘hood are locals. MUST-SEES/MUST-DOS DURING YOUR STAY 1. Take the ferry to Circular Quay. Walk to Balmain Ferry terminal and take the ferry into “the Quay”. For the cost of the ticket you will get a trip across the water to the most breathtaking views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Luna Park and the Opera House. 2. Get a snack from Adriano Zumbo The famous patisserie opened its first shopfront here in Balmain. The cakes are pretty whacky but one macaron will set you back just $2.50 and they always have insane flavours like Salted Caramel or Buttered Popcorn. 3. Drink Coffee Darling St is a coffee-lover's paradise, with – at last count – around 20 different cafes and restaurants proudly serving their own special bean blends, particularly on weekends when the whole street comes alive. 4. Drink beer Balmain has its own footy team called the Balmain Tigers, its own brewery called the Balmain Brewery Company and its own beer, which is called – have a guess -- “Balmain Pilsner”. And surprise, surprise, the brew is actually delicious! (Even more surprising : Unlike Fosters, locals actually drink it.) And the London and Courthouse pubs have great views of the Bridge and Harbour. 5. Go for a walk Walk in any direction in Balmain and you’ll eventually hit water and a view. We recommend heading north down Rowntree Street and around Ballast Point Park where you’ll see a close-up view of Sydney Harbour Bridge. Whole thing will take about 40 minutes going slowly. 6. Dawn Fraser Baths The “Dawny” is a local institution, a unique tidal pool and home to the oldest swimming club in Australia. It’s a great place to sunbake and dip into the water, and YES, those are actual live fish swimming around in there! NOTE: Pool closes for winter and reopens around October. Getting AroundRight at the doorstep are bus stops that will get you to the CBD in ten minutes (with buses coming every 10 mins). A delightful short walk downhill will get you to a ferry terminal where ferries depart regularly directly to Circular Quay. A taxi rank is 3 minutes down the road, Uber is always on hand and, if you’re keen, a walk to the city takes about half an hour.

Balmain is linked to Darling Harbour and Sydney city centre by a cycle track most of which is physically separated from motorised traffic. It takes about 15 minutes relatively easy pedaling to reach the city centre by the most direct route but more scenic routes following the shoreline are worth exploring. I may be able to provide bicycles, helmets, tools and directions if requested. Buses to the city centre run regularly to after midnight from bus stops about 10 minutes walk away on Victoria Road, Robert Street and Mullens Street . The journey takes as little as 7 minutes if there is no congestion. Ferries to Darling Harbour and Circular Quay leave from two ferry wharves the closest of which is Thames Street Wharf (about 15 minutes walk from the apartment). Other Things to NoteEva and/or I would pleased to chat with guests by phone before (and after) they move in. Finally, I love - and hope you will too - the sub-tropical palm and fern shaded courtyard. May I ask you to water the plants. Thank you!

Alternatively you can get the 442 bus to the Balmain East ferry. Walk to White Bay Cruise ship terminal or temporary convention centre. If you plan on catching public transport in Sydney, I suggest to order Opal cards prior, particularly for those travelling on concession (e.g. seniors discount) as it's very hard to get the Opal cards immediately once you are in Sydney. One of the few places you can get the Opal cards in person for concession is at Central Station.

The SpaceWe are nothing like a hotel! Instead, we are a home for you to stay and relax in. We live in an old, OLD ramshackle, basic, characterful, friendly house where in the summer heat you can relax at a tiny beach, only minutes from our door! We pride ourselves on being friendly and welcoming. We love being hosts, we find it fun. Oh and did I mention the house is OLD, so please don't be surprised to find it is indeed OLD! We are NOT a luxury pad! If you like hard lines and designer architectural minimalism this is not the place for you! We revel in boho chic, garage sale aesthetics, use miss-matched cups and saucers, love vintage things. Your room comes with views of the water, as we are in a most amazing position at the end of the road and looking out over the boat yards and the twinkling lights of the harbour at night. We love meeting people from all cultures and all walks of life. We also hosted for Air bnb in London with over a hundred guests and remember each and every person that stayed! We have been living in London for 15 years and we're now back home, to find Sydney is a world class city - but expensive for visitors. We can help you with all the cost saving tricks and advice to ensure you have a great stay! We can be flexible on check in times but please tell us when to expect you so we can let you in. Guest AccessThe bathroom is shared with us and is basic with a bath, shower and toilet but please note there is no sink, the taps are over the bath. It's practically antique but functional! Because of the odd layout of the house there is no access to a kitchen for guests, however we have set up a breakfast nook with a toaster, microwave, kettle and small fridge for guests so you can eat takeaways and prepare simple snacks anytime. Interaction with GuestsWe are a busy family like any other, working, getting the kids ready for school etc but we are very social and happy to include you in activities if they are happening. At the same time we respect your privacy and understand some visitors may prefer solitary pursuits. The Neighborhood The suburb of Balmain has a villagey feeling and is one of Sydney's safest neighbourhoods. Families and singles will feel perfectly happy any time of day walking around the area. On Saturdays there is a craft market at the top of our street and Rozelle Market (vintage) is further down the main street and well worth a visit for a bit of local colour. Or if gourmet food is your thing there's a popular market with organic produce in nearby Lilyfield (Orange Grove Market.) Our location is perfect, with gorgeous waterside walks and historical architecture all only a few steps from our door. Balmain is a historic district, yet not a tourist trap, and it's great to explore on foot with harbourside parks, quirky architecture, and numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants. At every turn, you'll catch magnificent views of the sparkling blue waters of beautiful Sydney harbour and its world-famous Harbour Bridge. It is busy on the main street yet delightfully peaceful in the many winding hilly roads. There is plenty to do. You can kayak on the harbour, go fishing, take a ferry ride all around the harbour to places like Luna Park, the Northshore, Crircular Quay, Darling Harbour and Cockatoo Island and there are lots of birds to watch. We have seen owls around our house and there are laughing kookaburras and colourful parakeets all year round. In nearby Mort Bay, there is a kids playground and free barbecue grills at Ballast Point for you to use as the sun sets. Ballast Point is an interesting parkland with industrial sculptures and maritime views of Sydney's working harbour You can play boules with locals on some evenings. There are pubs within a few minutes walk which have jazz and quiz nights as well as two lawn bowling clubs where you can have a delicious dinner, drink and play barefoot lawn bowls - a popular game with families. Just ask us and we'll be delighted to give you all the insider tips about our own neighbourhood and the rest of Sydney too! Getting AroundWe are just a few minutes walk from the Balmain ferry which takes you to Circular Quay, Cockatoo Island, North Sydney and Darling Harbor in minutes and cruise ships dock in nearby White Bay. Nearby is a hidden park with a tiny beach and wharf. (please look at the photos for a glimpse) The house is by Sydney harbour which is a working one with boat wrights so folk around Balmain tend to be at work and up early. We are only a short walk to buses and a trip to the CBD takes about 15 - 25 minutes depending on the time of day. It's also easy to get to Central Station where you can catch a train to the Blue Mountains. So we are perfectly placed to get to just about anywhere you need to go. We may also be able to pick you up from the airport in the family car for $30 (for just one person) or $60 for a carload of up to 4 people. This is close to the price by public transport but needs to be arranged in advance via email once you have booked, giving your flight number and landing time so we can arrange a pick up point in the airport. See below for more on public transport. Other Things to NoteThe Sydney public transport system is quite complicated and not cheap. You will get the best value by buying an OPAL card (see OPAL website) which will automatically calculate the best fare for you. However you must remember to tap on the card reader and tap off at the end of your journey. You will need a separate card for each passenger. The card is free and I think you can buy it at the airport but you must buy $10 or $20 travel credit to get the card. There is a daily cap of $15 but the airport train is extra on top of this and costs about $15 each way. A taxi from the airport costs about $75 to Balmain.
