We are more than happy to show you around and give you fun and an unforgettable Yogyakarta experience. The Neighborhood180 years before Mataram was divided into Yogyakarta and Surakarta Sultanates with signage of Gayanti Treaty, Panembahan Senopati announced the dawn of the Sultanate naming Kotagede as its first capital. History has it that the capital of Mataram moved several times afterwards only to return to a location near Kotagede. Only remnants of the old Kingdom survived and they can be found in Makam Hasta Kitha Ageng (Mataram Royal Cemetery), Masjid Agung Kotagede (Great Mosque of Kotagede), Pasar Gede (Great Market), Batu Gilang ancient outer city wall site.
Silversmiths and silver workshops grew in the colonial era around the end of the 19th century, mainly to cater Europe's growing appetite for silverware. Walled merchant houses owned by Kalang people flourished during this era, constructed in thick masonry walls combining elements from Dutch and Malay architecture. Some can still be found intact in Kampung Jagalan and along Jalan Mondorakan/Jalan Tegal Gendu.
