For Toddlers and young children, the Glen Mary wading pool (filtered) and changing rooms is 3 short blocks from your cottage and lots of fun for splashing around in the summer heat! Do not get fooled by listings that say they are close to Acadia when they are really 1-2 hours away! The traffic onto and off our island in summer is bumper to bumper first thing in the AM (on) and late in the day (off) with all the folks who rented "nearby." Staying at our cottage you are within 5 to 25 minutes of everything on Mt. Desert Island that you would want to see/do! Guest AccessYou will enjoy our 6' fully fenced-in back yard under the apple and maple trees. Its a great place to leave your bikes/kayaks. Interaction with GuestsYour cottage is twenty feet behind my main house, so if you need anything, just knock on the door! I will check in with you to see how you are doing and if you need any recommendations for dinner or your next hike! I have a trained therapy dog that goes out in the back yard as well, so let me know if you would rather have no interaction with her. The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood in downtown Bar Harbor is very quiet, so you get a great night's sleep! Yet you can walk 5-10 minutes into the commercial part of the town to go to a movie, dine out, rent a canoe or kayak, walk on our sandbar and see the sunset over Frenchman's Bay. Or bike/hike/bus to Acadia Natl. Park and all of Mount Desert Island. A block West is the Glen Mary Wading Pool (free) - great for toddlers and young children, and 1.5 blocks East is the MDI YMCA gym and pool that offers day/week memberships for a fee. Getting AroundFrom Mid-June to Mid-October, we have gas powered buses that take folks, their dogs, and their bikes all over Acadia National Park. The Bar Harbor Shuttle brings you from the Airport where car rentals are also available; and we have many taxi services! You can pull into the drive for unload, but then there is lots of parking on our street for your vehicle. Other Things to NoteDo not get fooled by listings that say they are close to Acadia when they are really 1-2 hours away! The traffic onto and off our island in summer is bumper to bumper first thing in the AM (on) and late in the day (off) with all the folks who rented "nearby." The SpaceLocated on a beautiful residential street in the heart of Bar Harbor Village - surrounded by B and B's, but you get the comfort and privacy of an entire home! "Mistress Row" is a street of finely designed Shingle Style homes so-named becuase several of the homes were purportedly built by visiting tycoons for their mistresses for when they had their yachts in port. Now a sought after family neighborhood, this is a lovely tree-lined one-way quiet street with well-maintained homes dating over a century. This one is from 1904 and has been recently renovated, preserving the original details of the home (clawfoot tubs, fireplaces, woodwork), but with lots of modern creature comforts! Walk to all the local eatieries, shops and parks without worrying about parking! Five bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, updated kitchen, copper-sinked bar, multiple living and dining areas, a home theatre, and a private pocket garden with deck, grill and dining set. Two blocks in two directions brings you to the ocean, Within a block are fine restaurants and shops, as well as two parks and the Island Explorer bus, which can take you all over the island! Be reminded of the time only when the nearby church bells toll. Note: street view shown on this site is incorrect. It shows one of the main street coming into Bar Harbor...we'd be happy to redirect any inquiring parties, as this appears to be a widget that can't be controlled. Available year-round. There are several fireplaces for chilly evenings and a delightful veranda to sit on (as you will find quite a few neighbors doing as well!). This street takes one back to the gilded age of Bar Harbor!

The tree shaded stone patio is a great place to have morning coffee or an evening barbeque. The kitchen garden will have herbs ready for picking. The ambiance inside the house is cozy. It was built in the late 1800's and we have tried to maintain the original features while blending in with modern creature comforts. In the summer the house stays quite cool and comfortable. Interaction with GuestsWe will be very close by if you have any emergencies but we respect your privacy and want you to feel that this is your home for your stay in Bar Harbor. If you want to meet us please let us know and we will be sure to stop by to say hello. The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood is a nice mix of year round families and visitors. The avenue is one of the widest in Bar Harbor and walkers enjoy accessing some of the playgrounds and churches that are also close by. Getting AroundThe Acadia Park Island Explorer bus stop is a five minute walk from the house. Other Things to NoteThe front porch door is very sticky and hard to open. The back door to the laundry room is easier to open. We have locked the house and the key is hanging on a hook inside the bulkhead that is next to the back door and small deck.

The SpaceThe recent renovation leaves the house intact with all the beautiful mouldings and fixtures associated with the building's history. Original plinth blocks and door knobs are my favorite. The space is airy and comfortable for up to 8 guests. Guest AccessThe grille out back. Interaction with GuestsVery little, unless more seems necessary. I usually greet guests to get them familiar with the home and introduce myself. The NeighborhoodThis is such a great spot. Very little noise but also close to the heart of town the Ball fields, YMCA, and playground close by make it an excellent resource for families and active adults. The SpaceBuying a home in downtown Bar Harbor was not easy! After looking at many, many properties, we selected The Rusticator for its convenience and walkability. We walk to most everything: our elementary school, work, shopping, the green, restaurants, ice cream and yoga classes. The open concept kitchen filled with natural sunlight was perfect. The backyard with its spacious lawn, deck and gardens is unique in downtown Bar Harbor and has been great for outdoor grilling and essential for our son and his friends. The decorative fireplace, wood floors and stairwell also caught our attention. Guest AccessThe Rusticator is a charming two story home from 1896 that has been updated over the years. Named for the visitors to Bar Harbor in the late 1800s, artists and wealthy tourists alike, The Rusticator is a lovely cottage located in the heart of downtown Bar Harbor. The Rusticator is our family home and available for weekly rentals in the summer season when we leave to explore other parts of the world. There are four bedrooms upstairs: 1 king bedroom, 2 queen bedrooms and a bedroom with a full and twin bed. There is a well equipped open kitchen, dining room, mudroom and living room with a beautiful decorative fireplace on the first floor. There are 2 bathrooms (upstairs has a claw foot tub and stand up shower and downstairs with only a standup shower). Other amenities include a flat screen TV with DVD player, access to WIFI internet and Netflix, washer/dryer (basement), dishwasher, microwave, gas BBQ, off street parking for 2 cars and outdoor dining furniture. Feel free to pick the tomatoes and herbs for cooking! Leave your car behind and walk to everything downtown, including whale watch & sea kayak tours, shops and much more. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park offer visitors a variety of activities, including hiking, biking, boating, lake swimming, carriage road walks, horse back riding, deep sea fishing! Visit the oceanarium, sail on the Margaret Todd, take a Jackson Lab visitors tour, enjoy tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House, golf at a PGA top-rated course, play tennis. Kids activities include Sand Beach, miniature golf, the town green and lots of ice cream shops! Interaction with GuestsWhen you are here we leave to travel ourselves! Please reach out to us by phone or email and if we can't be reached try our property manager and she will take care of any of your needs! The NeighborhoodWe live on a side street in downtown Bar Harbor. We are an "urban" neighborhood nestled around other year round residents and weekly rentals. Our favorite part of where we live is being able to walk to places in town! Though our neighborhood is on a side street, downtown is bustling in the summer so cars and people will explore the area. We are not a through street. We are lucky to have a backyard, garden and deck which is unique in our area! Getting AroundSince we are in town you can leave your car behind and walk! You are a 5 minute walk to The Island Explorer bus stop which provides free transportation around MDI! Check out their website for routes and time schedules. "The Island Explorer features eight bus routes linking hotels, inns, and campgrounds with destinations in Acadia National Park and neighboring village centers. Clean propane-powered vehicles offer Mount Desert Island visitors and residents free transportation to hiking trails, carriage roads, island beaches, and in-town shops and restaurants." If you fly into Bangor or Bar Harbor you can rent a car and head over. Bangor is just over one hour from our house and Bar Harbor Airport is about 15 minutes. We are down the street from two bike rental shops as well. Other Things to NotePlease note that the nightly price includes the state of Maine's 9% sales tax.

Lobster, of course, is a favorite, however Thai, Italian, Mexican, Chinese and many continental restaurants are all within a few blocks of each other, all within walking distance of the Devilstone Estate. We have a beautiful deco theater called the Criterion, and there is also "Reel Pizza" with two screens, showing first run movies, and art and foreign films. The films change often for visitors. THE SHOREPATH ESTATE: Built and named 'Devilstone' in 1885, this is one of the original estates on the famous Shorepath in Bar Harbor. Since the late 1800s, Bar Harbor has been the playground of the rich and famous, however it was, and still is a quaint, quiet and beautiful resort village on Mt. Desert Island. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park offer just about any form of recreation you could desire. The famous Kebo Golf Course is only five minutes from your home, and three other golf courses are close by, as well. Kebo is the eighth oldest golf course in the United States. The entrance to Acadia National Park is but a five minute drive. Hiking in Acadia is an unforgettable experience for the novice, or the truly experienced. Most all forms of rental equipment are available, however biking and kayaking seem to be the most popular. PLEASE INQUIRE VIA EMAIL! I will send more information, photos, prices, availability, etc. CLEANING FEES! THERE ARE NO UP FRONT, OR SET CLEANING FEES! THE FEE, IF ANY, DEPENDS ON YOU. The cleaning/damage deposit is $1,500.00, and completely, and quickly refundable if the Devilstone Main House is left in the same condition as you found it upon arrival. Unlike many other weekly rentals, we don't charge any up front, or set cleaning fees. The fee, IF ANY, depends on how much cleaning we have to do once you leave. After you leave, we launder all sheets, and towels, make the beds, clean the bathrooms, and the rest is up to you for 100% refund. Our cleaning fee policy is ideal for those who leave the Main House as they found it. Fortunately over 95% of our return guests leave the "Devilstone" Main House clean and tidy, which is why we stopped charging a fixed cleaning fee. "DEVILSTONE" is located on the famous BAR HARBOR SHOREPATH just a short walk from the town pier, and Main Street, and everything downtown Bar Harbor has to offer. You can walk one block to Main Street via a quiet neighborhood, or via the Shorepath.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Maine, and the guesthouse worked out perfectly for us. Our party of 5 included three adult children, and the house offered plenty of room for us to be together, or when we wanted our own space. The location of the house is terrific. We were only blocks from everything in town, so for the most part the cars stayed in the driveway. We made good use of the free island shuttle buses! We'll be back! CLEANING FEES!
