Half a mile from the nearest neighbour, 800 feet up on the side of the mountain Cader Idris high above the Barmouth estuary in mid-Wales, Cyfannedd Fach is a magic mountain cottage ideal for those who want to escape from the modern world into a comfortable eight hundred year old cottage where outside birds sing, sheep graze and people feel at peace. Seven miles along the mountain road from Dolgellau, through eight gates to the cottage standing on its own some 800 feet above the sea on the western flank of the mountain Cader Idris. Stay a few nights in the spacious and secluded bell tent nestled away amongst beautiful wildlife and nature. Enjoy a day at the beach kayaking and sailing, or grab your camera and snap some pictures of the beautiful mountainous terrain. Please be aware that the camp site's washing facilities are a fairly steep 5-10 minute walk from the bell tent. A clean and airy compost toilet is about 3 minutes walk across a field. The bell tent is therefore more suitable for adults and older children. Dogs on leashes are welcome, too.

The SpaceThe house has 7 bedrooms; 3 with double beds, 2 rooms with a double and a single and 2 further single bedrooms and a cot. There is a lounge and kitchen diner, games room and a small patio area with garden furniture. We provide all bedding but not towels. Guest AccessYou will have access to the whole house. Unfortunately, there is no parking available at the house though it is possible to pick up and drop off. I can arrange parking locally at a rate of £2 per car per night. Interaction with GuestsWe will meet you on arrival and show you around and inform you of things you need to know about the house and hand over the keys. After that its up to you though we are always available should anything arise. The NeighborhoodThe house location is excellent. Everything you need is within walking distance. The beach is 10 minutes away and the amenities of the town are immediately at hand; supermarkets, pubs, restaurants and shops. Within in a few minutes walk up steeps paths and steps (puff pant wheeze) you can be enjoying spectacular views of the coastline and town. Getting AroundBarmouth is connected to the rest of the world by the stunning Cambrian Coastal line. There are regular trains up and down the coast and London is approximately 5 hours away. A car though is useful as although there are buses available they schedule is fairly patchy. Other Things to NoteThe location of Barmouth is the real star turn. If you enjoy an out door life there is plenty to do. Mountain Biking at Coed y Brenyn, Hourse riding, fishing, canoeing along the estuary and many spectacular walks especially up Cadir Idris, Wales' second highest peak. Barmouth itself is a lively town that hosts various events throughout the year including the Three Peaks Yacht race, a kite festival, various music festivals and events and lively pubs that offer a fun night life! Just a note on summer bookings; we only accept 7 night bookings during the school summer holidays.

The SpaceDownstairs is a sitting room and dining room in one open space, with a low beamed ceiling. There's a wood/coal burner in the large old fireplace, and fuel is provided. There's a small adjoining kitchen. The small bathroom with a shower (wet room) adjoins the lobby. The kitchen and bathroom are due refurbishment but are kept in good nick. The cottage walls are almost a metre thick. A tiny wooden staircase, fairly steep, leads up to the two bedrooms. First is the twin, and this leads directly into the double. The beds will be made up with linen and duvets but guests will have to bring along their bath towels. The wall between them is a wooden partition below the beam, and there is an open space between the two rooms above the beam. Guest AccessThe whole cottage, as well as the garage where we store the fuel. The land around the cottage. Interaction with GuestsI live in Scotland, but arrange the collection of the keys and access to the cottage. The NeighborhoodThis is a remarkable place to escape modern life. The nearest house is a farmhouse, around 500m away. Note that road up to the cottage is narrow and there are around 6-8 gates to open and close (keeping the sheep in the right places!) between here and Dolgellau, the nearest town. The drive takes around 30 minutes. The nearest supermarkets are in Dolgellau, or there are some small grocery shops in the smaller nearby town of Fairbourne. The land beyond the cottage was once owned by the Forestry Commission, so is covered with tall pine trees. I will send you very clear instructions about reaching the cottage, but it's reached via a narrow road that turns into a track down to the cottage, but one that is passable with a normal car in all but the most adverse conditions. There will undoubtedly be a point when first-time visitors think: 'where am I going? I'm heading to the middle of nowhere!!' but this is all part of the loveliness of the place... Getting AroundYou will definitely need your own transport! The road is passable with a normal car. Occasionally after heavy rain it can get muddy, but it's usually easy to drive and park next to the cottage. Other Things to NotePlease note you must bring your own linen and towels. Those who have visited Cyfannedd Fach in the past will know that the field around the cottage is in turn surrounded by forestry planted in the early Eighties. We have been told that some of this forestry close to the cottage will be ‘harvested’ at times during the coming months and we feel we need to warn guests that regrettably this occasionally will mean some level of noise and disruption at the times when the work is being done.

The apartment is located just a couple of minutes walk to Barmouth beach. It is small but modern with a well-equipped kitchen/lounge/breakfast bar, double bedroom and bathroom. There is also a small seating area and table outside in a shared courtyard. It is equipped with 36" Smart TV with free Netflix access, BT Infinity Wifi, washing machine, multi-function shower (water temperature issues have been easily solved by lowering water pressure). Parking is a bit limited in Barmouth as the old town is built up the hillside on a network of winding alleys and stairways. There is a 24 hour car park 3 minutes walk from the house that charges £ 7 for 24 hours or £ 3 for the day. For free parking there is also a row of parking spaces opposite our road on the main street which are free from 18.00 and Park Road opposite the front of the train station offers quite a number of free spaces all day. Other overnight options are that Pieces for Places (furniture outlet on High St, Barmouth) also have a car park on Jubilee Road that they rent for £ 3 per night with prior arrangement. There are other spaces on the same road also for £ 3.00 per day. For those who would enjoy the mile walk across the estuary, the carpark over at Morfa Mawddach is also free but may be a bit isolated. Obviously there are other spaces to be found in the side streets around town and I would be interested to hear in any finds. There are two hanging bike brackets in the wall under the stairs and a black and silver bike cover in the storage cupboard in the flat Barmouth is located on the west coast of Snowdonia and boasts a long sandy beach, a picturesque harbour and the stunning beauty of the Mawddach estuary. It is the perfect holiday destination with an extensive strand bordered by sandhills , ideal for sunbathing and beach games and yet never crowded. Surfing and canoeing are also possible provided care is taken with the river currents. The old town (the Rock) which climbs up the steep slopes of Dinas Oleu is a great place to explore with its steep steps and slate-roofed cottages and endless small gardens and potted flowers The harbour is a delight, in particular the spectacular Barmouth Bridge which spans the river for 700 m and can be crossed on foot or cycle and is perfect for viewing the evening sunset. The local hills and mountains (Cader Idris) also offer endless footpaths and opportunities to view the sea and the estuary from every angle, providing opportunities for ambitious all-day walks to a 10 minute stroll. There is also the Mawddach Trail, a disused railway line to Dolgellau, where cyclists and walkers can walk and cycle along the spreading river below the foothills of Cadair Idris . The Guardian cycle guide refers to the trail as 'perhaps the best short cycle ride in Wales. Just 1 minutes from Barmouth harbour and 2 minutes from the beach, this apartment is the perfect location for visiting Snowdonia, cycling along Barmouth estuary on the Mawddach Trail or just lazing on the beach. Other local attractions include Harlech Castle, Shell Island and the italianate village, Portmeirion.
