Rates cover 2 guests per night with a minimum 2 night stay. Additional guests are charged at $50.00 per night. Slow combustion fireplace - firewood supplied during the winter months. The SpaceBarrington River House is framed by over 432 acres of stunning farmland in the Barrington River Valley, New South Wales. The House is located on a large rural property that travels back from the banks of the Barrington River to reach the famous "Gloucester Bucketts" The house boasts (almost) every modern facility and appliance, including reverse cycle air-conditioning and slow combustion fire (free firewood supplied!) The kitchen is fully equipped with fan forced oven, large stainless steel fridge, microwave and cooktop. The SpaceThe property stands on 4 sloping hectares (9.5 acres) with two small dams (reservoirs) that supply water for the garden.The setting is truly breathtaking with spectacular mountain and valley views and only 3.5 hours from Sydney or under 2 hours from Newcastle. Nearby World Heritage listed Barrington Tops is unique for sightseeing as well as gold mines, trout fishing, lookouts, river walks, picnic areas... There is always plenty to do in the area from river Kayaking, to hiking, biking, Devils (Tasmanian) in the Wild tours, motor cycling, cultural events, festivals, markets, horse riding, Platypus spotting in the Barrington River just down the road, swimming, kayaking (guests are welcome to use our three kayaks, at their own risk) and fishing in the same river (not trout here but definitely bass)... Or merely relax peacefully, read a book, sip a coffee or maybe a glass of wine. Guest AccessThe main guest bedroom has a luxurious Queen Size bed with Laura Ashley linen, electric blanket, heating, ceiling fan, bar fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and supplies, chilled water, luxury towels. Guests have their own dedicated bathroom with ample supplies of towels and toiletries. There is a veranda attached to the guestroom with sitting out table, pergolla and sun-umbrella. A second room with two King Size single beds is also available. This is probably most suitable for members of the same party , as all guests will share the same bathroom. Children would use this bedroom which is close to the main bedroom. I must mention those views again and the several different types of parrots that visit the bird table as well as the wallabies that frequently visit. Meals will be served in the family room or at your outdoor table depending on the weather. Free WiFi. Interaction with GuestsYour hosts, Penny and Chris, are both well traveled having lived between them in UK, Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Pacific Islands and traveled extensively in those Regions. They enjoy entertaining, socialising and ensuring that guests are comfortable and enjoy their visits. Penny has worked for most of her life in catering and Chris is a competent and adventurous cook. Between them they will offer top quality meals preceded by appropriate refreshments, if guests wish to dine in house . We recently received a review from a French couple, Loic and Gigi, who stayed with us soon after ChriStmas 2015. The review is written in French reads:“chers Penny et Chris merci pour cet excellent séjour de 2 nuits chez vous .nous étions comme des ´coqs en pâte ´ et avons apprécié votre générosité votre élégance et votre grande culture . We were like 'cocks in pastry' [pigs in mud] and appreciated your generosity, your style and your great culture. Chris is the 'Bocuse' [celebrated French chef] of Gloucester and Penny the perfect hostess. Dinner was an unexpected pleasure. Thank you for these two night Loic and G For dinner on the first night that Loic and Gigi were with us we served marinated mushrooms Greek style, slow roast shoulder of lamb also Greek style, English style Christmas fruit mince tart with brandied cream. For the second night we went French with Coq au Vin Rouge (chicken in red wine) followed by Cherry Clafoutis. The NeighborhoodThis area is unbelievably beautiful. The people are all so very friendly and welcoming. The town of Gloucester is a great little town with a strong community spirit and proudly won the NSW Tidy Towns Competition in 2015 for the second time. We love the rural aspects, the rolling cattle-inhabited paddocks and all the bird and animal wildlife. Getting AroundWe are not remote but a car is essential. Although there is a good rail service from Sydney and Newcastle to Gloucester. There is the option to hire car in Gloucester. Other Things to NoteChildren aged ten years and above are welcome and will be charged according to age and requirements. We ask guests to stay for a minimum of two nights. We want our visitors to relax and enjoy their stay in their own way. We have a table tennis table and dartboard on the veranda (if it's not too windy). We have a bookshelf of popular authors, a number of games (Scrabble, Mahjong, Trivia, Shut the Box, Cards and a whole book of card games to play). Our price includes a light breakfast comprised of juice, breakfast cereal, toast and home made marmalade, jams and local honey, Twinings tea and espresso coffee. We will enjoy providing a 'Full Country Breakfast' of Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice, fruit salad, locally smoked bacon, home made sausages, eggs any which way laid this morning by our own hens, home made bread, marmalade, conserves, local honey, Twinings tea and espresso coffee. A surcharge of $15.00 per guest applies for the Full Country breakfast. We will happily provide a picnic lunch if you are heading out to adventure. Price from $10.00 depending on contents. We (and our little Dachshund 'Coco') are very happy to welcome small 'civilized' dogs. Hope they don't chase the Wallabies. We hate rules but dogs must be house-trained and no sleeping on beds. We will also be very happy to provide a two course dinner with host's choice of menu, but we ask guests to book in advance and, at the same time, to let us know of any allergies or foods they cannot or prefer not to eat. The charge will be $30.00 per guest which includes pre-dinner wine or beer with BYO for dinner wines. Generally your hosts will eat dinner with their guests.

The SpaceThe cottage is comfortable, with modern cooking amenities and bathroom facilities, which includes a spa. The main bedroom has a queen sized bed and the upstairs loft has five beds. There are electric blankets on five of the beds. The living space is open and friendly. The verandah is relaxing, with a view of bush foliage and stately blue gum trees. Guests are entertained by the wildlife. We have a barbecue on the verandah. Guest AccessGuests have access to all the household amenities and to the covered outdoor barbeques. There is a tennis court with a barbeque area attached and a swimming hole, beautiful Crystal Pool, close to the cottage. For a leisurely walk to the Williams River fresh water swimming pool you can take the trail. On the way, you pass between gigantic trees and fascinating undergrowth. There are picturesque walks, small waterfalls and the beautiful Pool of Reflection to be enjoyed. All are in close proximity to Lyrebird Cottage. Interaction with GuestsI am very happy to communicate with guests through email and telephone if needed. I am happy to answer questions and provide information about the cottage and its environs. Guests will have complete access to the cottage. The key to the cottage can be collected from the key safe near the front door. I will provide the code. The NeighborhoodThe Barrington Wilderness Cottages are surrounded by typical Australian bushland. The 'neighbourhood' is therefore quiet with only the sounds of the bush breaking the silence. There are farms along both sides of the road approaching the cottages. Dungog is the closest shopping centre and is thirty minute's drive from the cottage. The internet can be accessed in Dungog. There is no mobile phone access at the cottage, but there is in Dungog. Getting AroundTo get to Barrington Tops from the airport you will need to travel by train to Central Station and then board a Country Train from Central to Dungog Station. The cottage is forty kilometres from the Station. Being so remote, Barrington Tops is not serviced by public transport so it is necessary to have access to a car. Car hire can be arranged from Maitland. Another option is to travel along the Central and North Coast and then cut across from Newcastle to Barrington Tops. This is a popular way to travel to our cottage. Other Things to NoteThe attraction of Lyrebird Cottage is the National Park location. Barrington Tops is a World Heritage Listed Park. The cottage is completely self contained and there is so much to experience in the Park with its walking tracks and swimming holes. It provides a perfect place for couples or families to experience a relaxing and yet invigorating holiday with complete privacy.

        Lyrebird cottage is situated in Barrington Tops National Park, a protected Wilderness Area. It is dwarfed by beautiful Bluegum Trees and looks out on uninterrupted Australian bushland grasses and shrubs. It has several tracks for bushwalking and many fresh water pools and small waterfalls along the Williams River trail. There is a large pool of the cleanest water in Australia, for swimming in Spring and Summer. The cottage is one of a number situated at the end of Salisbury Road and entered through large gates welcoming the traveller. It has a carport for the safety of you vehicle and stairs to the verandah where there are tables and chairs for relaxing and watching the wildlife. The main bedroom overlooks the verandah and in the morning it is amusing to watch the rosellas and king parrots fighting for seed from the bird feeders. A resident brush turkey may venture onto the verandah to challenge the parrots and rosellas. A lyrebird forages around the back, in the wild garden for food, displacing decorative stones put there to impress visitors. Paddy melons and wallabies appear at around dusk. The main living area has the kitchen and dining room combined with all modern appliances for self catering whilst in the cottage. The loft is reached by stairs and is almost in line with the tops of the bluegums. The bathroom has a spa bath which is enjoyed by our guests. There is no onsite internet access which is appreciated by guests who want a private holiday away from their usual busy lives. The nearest wifi access is in Dungog at Chillbillies' CafĂŠ/Restaurant or at the Library where you can use the computers for the internet. Mobile access is available in Dungog but not at the Cottage. The main bedroom has a queen sized bed while the loft has a double bed and large single bunk style, and two other single beds. There is a gas log fire and television screen in the living area. There is a fridge and stove top cooking facilities and a microwave oven for home cooked meals. When driving from Dungog you pass through farming land with contented looking cows enjoying the paddocks. There are several disused small chapels reminiscent of a past era and a few small cemeteries dating back to the early 1800s. The surrounding area was used for dairy farming. The Cottage is surrounded by Bluegum Forest which is typical of parts of Australia. Bluegum is a magnificent tree which has been painted by many Australian artists over the years. There are many small bushwalks as well as longer ones which wind along with the Williams River. On the drive in to Barrington Tops Cottages, you pass through farmland which was very well used in the past, but now accommodates a smaller number of Dairy Farms. You are advised to watch for small wildlife such as echidna, wallaby, wombat which sometimes wander onto the road.

Located right on the beautiful Barrington River, there are three 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom cottages with all modern conveniences. Satellite TV, WiFi internet, Aircon, fans, Fully equipped kitchen and an extra large verandah overlooking the river with BBQ and outdoor furniture to sit and relax. Relax in the peaceful surroundings or take advantage of the river with you own great swimming hole, just down the steps from the Cottages. If Fishing is your thing, then cast a line and enjoy the challenge. When conditions allow there is an outside fire pit to sit and relax with a drink in the evenings. There are farm animals on the property for the kids to enjoy, ponies, sheep, goats and cattle. Just 5 minutes drive from the Barrington village or a further 10 minutes into Gloucester for shops and cafes. MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE... bring your mountain bikes.. there is a 5 km round trip around our property - mostly tracked ..lots of fun.. safe for the little ones. a few hills..but not too bad.. :) WALKING TRACK... proper footwear required.. there are many great walking tracks.. you can explore and make your own.. get creative and follow the river bank and you will find some very cool places downstream... KAYAKING... we provide Kayaks for your enjoyment. a single and a double kayak at present. when the river not low you can kata to TIRI bridge approx 10km downstream.. or you can explore in the Kayak around the property. All children must be accompanied by an adult. We have a range of sizes of life jackets available. SWIMMING... the temperature of river is perfect for swimming most of the year (September to May). The river is wide and deep. Although never is it safe to dive into a river. FISHING... with the correct bait (prawns) there is a great chance you could catch dinner.. BYO fishing equipment. WILDLIFE WATCHING... BYO binoculars.. there is a very high chance you will be seeing a huge range unique Australian wildlife from Wallabies, Kangaroos to Wedge-tailed eagles.. See a side of Australia that is missing in modern life.. CAMPFIRES... There is a set up out door fire pit not too far from the house that is perfect for the GLAMPERS out there..
