The SpaceApart from the aforementioned Fountain of Screaming Fish, the place is a marvel of things the state thinks should educate children, such as huge murals narrating Batticaloa's history, an auditorium and a library (note the stately portraits above the door). We'd go there if we were children! The accommodation in itself is basic but pretty nice. There are three cool rooms with decent beds and private bathrooms available. No real eating facilities though, so grab your meals and water bottles from the town before heading to Kathir's. Interaction with GuestsOur hosts during the two times we stayed there were the venerable Mr Mahalingam and a young lady whose name we've forgotten... We took an instant liking to the grey-bearded Mr Mahalingam, whose soft, inquisitive eyes spoke in genuine wonder at what on earth had brought us to his realm. Both spoke some English and did their best to accommodate us, with great success, even though the place clearly doesn't see many foreigners. The NeighborhoodThe whole setting is really remarkable, as the Youth Centre is part of an area that consists of Batticaloa's Lighthouse, a popular little beach with a playground and boat rides, a sports ground and a few tourist facilities. It's also part of an eco-project of some sort. In fact, they've done a really good job turning the area into a nice recreation park for Batticaloans. During weekends, lots of people come to have a look at the Lighthouse across the street, or take a dip in the adjoining lagoon. A short boat ride will bring you to the Eco Park, which is interesting if you've never seen a solar panel. A nice place to hang out for a couple of days.

The SpaceCompared to most tourist accommodations in Batticaloa, this place has it all: nice rooms, English-speaking staff, a restaurant kitchen and things to see and do nearby. When we first came there they were still painting the rooms and were about to open up, so everything's brand new. Most rooms have AC, but, as electricity costs a bunch in Sri Lanka, turning it on will affect the price, as it does anywhere. Do ask the staff to help you out with arranging transport or even daytrips in the area. They'd be happy to accommodate you. Interaction with GuestsAnanthan is what we call a tourism professional. He's been in tourism for years, speaks English and runs this place for a living. He can arrange breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as local transport and activities in the area. The NeighborhoodIf any town in Sri Lanka can call itself 'Lagoon Town' it's Batticaloa, or 'Batti' as the locals call it. Believed to be founded by the ancient Vedda people and subsequently colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch and English, Batti has tons of history, paired with an abundance of natural beauty and things to do. The reason why Batti isn't visited much is because it's quite a trip to get there, it's was one of the main hotspots during the decades-long conflict and it was one of the places hardest hit by the Boxing Day Tsunami. A true Neverbeen location.

The SpaceThe newly established “Naaval” on the coast of the Navaladi water front in Batticaloa was incarnated on the 24th of November 2014 with a prime purpose of giving an unique experience to those looking for a getaway with luxury, sophistication and comfort on the commercially untouched eastern lands of Sri Lanka Located perfectly around 4 Km from the Baticoloa city centre, Naaval is in touching distance from local tourists sites such as the old Portuguese fort, the light house and various Hindu kovils and catholic churches while ensuring that it is far enough from the hustle and bustle any of these sites could bring in. The SpaceHave you ever dreamt of spending a few days at the farm...? Or dreamt of relaxing in a fruit garden, among mango, banana and coconut trees? If your answer to both questions is yes... We have THE place for you. Welcome to N.A. Green Farm, a farmstay in a greeeeeeen garden, where Jegan will definitely make you taste fresh milk early morning, fry a few fresh eggs for your breakfast, feed you with organic fruits... The guests' room is in Jegan's home, and can accommodate 2 to 3 people. The room is non A/C, equipped with a double bed, a fan and a mosquito net. A single bed can be added on request. The room has attached western style toilets and access to a fully fenced outdoor bathroom, to take your shower under the stars... Guest AccessThe house comprises a dining place, a veranda and a sitting room with TV. The surrounding garden is a perfect spot to relax with your favorite book. Interaction with GuestsJegan shares his home with the guests. After numerous years of work in Colombo, Jegan has decided to come back to Batticaloa and work to develop his dream-farm. His wife and children, living in Colombo, might visit, but most of the time, Jegan will be your only host. You'll be able to interact with Jegan and his farm employees, and to visit the farm and/or participate in the farm activities if you wish so. The NeighborhoodYou can participate in farming activities (feeding the poultry, milking the cows, plucking the fruits, watering the plants...). There is a famous Hindu temple around, and lagoon and sea are just a couple of km away. East N' West on board can guide you around and meet the women engaged in palmyrah handicraft. Getting AroundN.A. Green Home is situated in Mylambaveli, around 10 km from Batticaloa, around 1km from the main road Batticaloa-Valaichchenai. There are buses on the main road, and 3-wheelers are generally available at the junction. Other Things to NoteTo enjoy your stay at the farm and understand its daily routine, you are requested to stay a minimum of 2 nights so that you can get a full-day at the farm. Additionally, we can propose some additional activities and packages for 3-4 nights / 2-3 days (or more!) with bicycle rides and excursions organized by East N' West on Board in and around Batticaloa. Meals will generally be prepared by Jegan's neighbour, on woodfire, and will be typical village food (without chilly if needed, don't worry...). There is a water filter that filters and chlorinates the water, so it is perfectly safe for you to drink it. Jegan usually filters the water and puts it in the fridge so that anytime, you can get safe and cool drinking water. We encourage the guests to refill their bottles and drink this water, to save money, and the environment... Gentle reminder: what you are about to book is a homestay, not a guesthouse or a hotel. Please stay with us for the right reasons! Our hosts, who are carefully selected by our field team, are newly introduced to the hospitality sector. They are simply beautiful human beings having this “something special” that makes us believe that you will enjoy sharing a moment of their lives. To be accommodated by a local family is a unique experience. Families welcome you at their home, which enable you to grasp a bit of the local lifestyle, but which also bears limitations. Please read carefully the description of the facilities and understand what you plan to book. Local houses generally have rooms that are quite small, which is adapted to the local families’ lives, but might be uncomfortable for guests coming from wealthier contexts. Therefore if you need large rooms, luxury beds or hot water and this is obviously not described in the listing, we do encourage you to find a place which is more convenient for your material needs, rather than booking one of our homestays with expectations that cannot be met in a family home and ending up dissatisfied. Thanks for your understanding...

The Space Compared to most tourist accommodations in Batticaloa, this place has it all: nice rooms, English-speaking staff, a restaurant kitchen and things to see and do nearby. Interaction with Guests Ananthan is what we call a tourism professional. He's been in tourism for years, speaks English and runs this place for a living. He can arrange breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as local transport and activities in the area. The Neighborhood If any town in Sri Lanka can call itself 'Lagoon Town' it's Batticaloa, or 'Batti' as the locals call it.

About This Listing Stay in this wonderfully weird youth centre / eco-park / lagoon playground / lighthouse and get screamed at by some plaster fish. No seriously, you'll love this simple but decent place. A real bed in a clean, cool room in a very nice location. The Space Apart from the aforementioned Fountain of Screaming Fish, the place is a marvel of things the state thinks should educate children, such as huge murals narrating Batticaloa's history, an auditorium and a library (note the stately portraits above the door). We'd go there if we were children! The accommodation in itself is basic but pretty nice. There are three cool rooms with decent beds and private bathrooms available. No real eating facilities though, so grab your meals and water bottles from the town before heading to Kathir's. Interaction with Guests Our hosts during the two times we stayed there were the venerable Mr Mahalingam and a young lady whose name we've forgotten... The Neighborhood The whole setting is really remarkable, as the Youth Centre is part of an area that consists of Batticaloa's Lighthouse, a popular little beach with a playground and boat rides, a sports ground and a few tourist facilities.
