The SpaceThis is a pretty and private garden hideaway which comfortably accommodates one or two people. The space has a lovely tile bathroom, with a soaking tub and a double shower built for sharing. Inside you have a well equipped kitchenette, which tidies away behind closed doors, or you can barbeque outside in the garden patio area. This studio comprises part of a larger high end residence, but is fully self contained with it's own private entrance and a designated parking space. The house is located in a quiet semi-rural neighborhood overlooking Humboldt Bay, two miles from the Arcata plaza and Humboldt State University, and seven miles from downtown Eureka. Wireless internet. Well equipped kitchenette - fridge/freezer, microwave, hot plate, toaster, toaster oven, electric kettle, cookware/dishware. Gas barbeque with side burner. Linens, bedding, bathrobes. Organic coffee/tea and breakfast items provided. The apartment is near the front of the property for easy coming and going, but come around back for terrific sunsets, chicken visiting, or to sit around a warming fire in the fire pit. Bella is readily available to orient guests to the local area. As long term Humboldt County residents that enjoy a good adventure, we're delighted to share local tips about places to hike, bike, surf and explore. That said, we like to let guests lead the way as to whether they prefer more or less contact, so if you're here for a little solitude or a romantic getaway, the studio is well situated for that and we're happy to give you all the space you need. Bayside is a sweet neighborhood with a semi-rural feel, just two miles from downtown Arcata and Humboldt State University. The property has panoramic views over Humboldt Bay and marsh areas that are part of the Pacific flyway for many kinds of migratory birds. Depending on the season, the sound of cows in the fields is complemented by the sounds of thousands of wild geese coming and going; frogs chorusing; coyotes yipping. There is a delightful coffee house at the corner, or head into Arcata or Eureka to find a nice range of local restaurants. The closest supermarket is a mile away, but venture a mile further to find two remarkably well stocked natural foods supermarkets in downtown Arcata. Alternatively, stock up at one of the many local farmers markets - especially Saturdays on the Arcata Plaza - which offer great local produce and fun people watching. We also have an organic community farm with farm stand about a 1/4 mile down the road. If you're up for an adventure, you can hike and mountain bike (even horse ride) to your heart's content along miles of trails in the the Arcata community forest (2350 acres) or stay on flatter ground in the Arcata Bottoms and along the Hammond Trail. A little further afield, explore majestic old growth redwood forests and beautiful seascapes among the many stunning National and State Parks that Humboldt and Del Norte counties have on offer. Enjoy the temperate coastal weather or head a little inland for some serious sun and great river swimming. In fact, there are a terrific range of scenic rivers to be found in all directions, offering swimming, rafting and paddling opportunities for all skill levels. Twenty minutes north is the picturesque fishing village of Trinidad with beautiful rocky coves and beaches to explore plus regular sightings of seals, sea lions and whales (in season). Kayak the myriad lagoons and sloughs in the area to get up close and personal with birds, otters and elk. For a more cosmopolitan adventure, Eureka and Ferndale are brimming with gorgeous Victorian architecture; enjoy the evening Art walks held monthly in a range of local towns; or check out the local theatre, music and other performing arts offerings. The studio has a designated parking space for a one vehicle. We are a short pedal off Highway 101 if you're arriving by bike. If you are vehicle free, we are approx. 35 min walk to the heart of Arcata and local Transit Center (one mile to the closest local bus stop). For those arriving by plane, you can arrange ahead of time for the local shuttle to pick you up (about $22 plus $5 for extra person). You can also call a taxi (about $30) but they don't take advance bookings so the wait can be long at times. Guest pricing includes 12% City of Arcata Transient Occupancy Tax. Guest AccessWireless internet. Organic coffee/tea and breakfast items provided. The apartment is near the front of the property for easy coming and going, but come around back for terrific sunsets, chicken visiting, or to sit around a warming fire in the fire pit. Interaction with GuestsBella and Don have lived at this house for the last 13 years, but we have recently moved into the middle of Arcata to fix up a dilapidated but very worthwhile Victorian project house. Other people do live in the house - all professional adults at this point in time. That said, we do still manage the studio ourselves and are frequently at the property. I am also generally available to meet guests on arrival, if you would like some in-person orientation to the local area. Otherwise, I always leave a map with local restaurant and supermarket suggestions as well as general visitor information. As long term Humboldt County residents that enjoy a good adventure, we're delighted to share local tips about places to hike, bike, surf and explore if you're interested. If you are vehicle free, we are approx. 35 min walk to the heart of Arcata and local Transit Center (one mile to the closest local bus stop). Also, if you have a thing about ever seeing an ant inside, this may not be the space for you. This neighborhood does have tiny black ants about and it's an unusual house that is tight enough to exclude them completely. So sometimes you may encounter the odd small black ant wandering about looking to bump into something tasty (apparently they don't smell well so they just wander instead). Some times of the year they are more likely to find their way inside than others - after a big rainstorm for instance - and they may get excited and tell their friends if they bump into food you've left laying about overnight. We have canvassed this issue with guests, and the general consensus seems strongly in favor a non-chemical response to the occasional-ant-management issue. In line with providing largely organic breakfast supplies, and using earth and people sensitive cleaning products, we also choose to not use bug spray and insecticides inside the space to chase off the odd ant. We know that ants pre-date us in the neighborhood, and will no doubt also post-date us, so we opt to simply wipe up the occasional ant that wanders by rather than going the route of chemical 'fixes'. We hope you appreciate our efforts to provide a healthy environment for your visit, but we understand that if seeing an occasional ant causes you consternation, you may choose an alternative location. We do have other reliable never-an-indoor-ant options available.

The SpaceWe have a bedroom and bathroom available to our guests. There is also kitchen access and guests are more than welcome to share the living room and outdoor space (our deck overlooks a beautiful pasture with view of the bay). Guest AccessPlease see above. Regarding check-in - during the school year, we are not home until after 6pm. We can let you know where the key is located and you are more than welcome to arrive any time after 2:00, but we wouldn't be able to greet you. Interaction with GuestsDepending on when you arrive and how long you are here, we are typically available for check-in (except as noted above) and to assist with information about our local area. Other than that, we pretty much stay out of your way and only spend time chatting, if that is something you are interested in. The NeighborhoodThe house is situated in a very quiet and safe neighborhood that is only about four minutes from downtown Arcata. Other Things to NoteThe house is on the corner of Margaret and Panorama. However, the front door is NOT on Margaret, so it is best to park near the back gate. You would turn onto Panorama and take an immediate left into the first driveway. The house is on the left and there is a gate that leads you to the front door. When parking, just make sure you park close enough to the fence so that others can get through. BTW - it sounds way more complicated than it is.

The Space*NOTE: we only book up to 3-months out, so if you're looking at dates far into the future, there's a great chance the yurt will be available. We hope you'll check back as the dates get closer. *NOTE: We are dog friendly, but we do like to know if you are bringing your dog. Please let us know when you submit your reservation request. The yurt is a beautiful space, and a great example of a 427 square-foot 'tiny home.' We spent a year designing and building it with ecological principles in mind, including using reclaimed lumber and salvaged materials whenever possible. Staying here is an experience -- expect something different, though no less comfortable, than your average house. It's simple living, and just a few steps off the beaten track. The space is perfect for 2 adults and comfortable for 3. Children are welcome, of course! It has almost all the amenities, and is semi-off-grid: our water comes from a well on our property, and grey water from the sinks and shower is treated on-site through biofilters, greywater wetlands, and mulch basins. The hot water and stove/oven are fueled by propane. Note that THERE IS NO INTERNET AT THE YURT (we are working on this, but for now...). Cell phone coverage is good. The lower bed is a queen with down pillows and comforter and the upper bed is full-sized with synthetic down pillows and comforter. The yurt is heated fully by a Vermont Castings wood stove, and we will provide you with firewood. During the winter, you may need to stoke the fire during the night to keep things toasty... it is a little more maintenance than turning up the thermostat, but we think it's worth it! Mornings can be chilly - bring layers and slippers! The kitchen is fully stocked with cooking and eating supplies, a 3-burner stove and small oven, a toaster, a small fridge and freezer, as well as a few basics -- olive oil, salt and pepper, and enough coffee (french press), herbal tea, and sugar to get your first morning going (bring your own cream). The shower house is detached from the yurt (about 15 feet away). Bring a robe and flip flops for going back and forth if you like. A skylight, as well as a wall made from a huge window salvaged from our local historic fire station, gives you the feeling of taking an outdoor shower while staying warm inside. It is very private, but you can draw a curtain over the window if you prefer. The toilet is a state-of-the-art low-water composting toilet. The user-experience is the same as a regular toilet, but the waste is contained in a composting system rather than sent to the sewer or septic tank. There are no strange smells, and you most likely won't notice much of a difference from a regular toilet, except you flush with a foot pedal. We do ask that nothing but toilet paper be flushed! Guest AccessThe yurt is a 150 foot walk from the parking area on a woodchip path. Guests have full access to the yurt, shower house, and immediate surroundings, including a wood-chip patio that provides a perfect spot for happy hour, breakfast, reading, or bird watching. The yurt is surrounded by open space and is very private and secluded. At the request of our neighbors, we do ask that guests do not venture onto neighboring private property (signed as such). Interaction with GuestsWe live in the main house on the property, about 300 feet away (but not within eyesight) from the yurt. Most often, we happen to run into guests either coming or going, and exchange a few friendly words. Beyond that, we tend to be pretty hands-off hosts, because we know that when we rent other places, we are often trying to get away from it all. We are of course always here to help when you need something, and happy to offer recommendations on the area (there is also a binder in the yurt with heaps of places to go, eat, shop, etc.). We've also tried to make everything in and around the yurt as self-explanatory as possible so that guests can be as self-sufficient as they like. We will need to visit the outside of the yurt once a day for a few minutes to take care of the toilet, but will try to do that during the day when we are least likely to disturb you. The NeighborhoodBayside is a quiet, sleepy neighborhood. We have a post office, and Beachcomber Cafe is a great spot just down the road (15 min walk, 3 min drive). They have free wi-fi, great food and coffee. Bring your own cup - they don't offer disposable ones. Closed on Sunday. Redwood Roots Farm is just up the road. From June-October they have a fabulous farm stand with all kinds of veggies and flowers on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-6. Downtown Arcata is just a few miles (8 mins) away by car, and is an easy bike ride too. Lots of great shops and restaurants, and a wonderful Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings, April-November. Humboldt State University is also just a few miles (10 mins) away by car. The Arcata Community Forest and Redwood Park (playground) are also just a few miles away. There are great hiking and biking trails here in the redwoods. You'll find a map of our favorite hiking and biking routes in the yurt. There are great beaches and sand dunes nearby, as close as a 15-minute drive. The quaint coastal town of Trinidad, with its beautiful bay, beaches, sea stacks, and seals is 20 miles north. Incredible State Parks and Redwood National Park are all close enough to make great day trips. You'll find lots of flyers, maps, and recommendations in the yurt! Getting AroundBayside and Arcata are easy to access by bicycle, so bring a bike if you like (we will have rental bikes available eventually). Remember your helmet and lock! Beyond Arcata, it will be somewhat challenging to get around without a car here. There is public transportation on main routes regionally -- Arcata Mad River Transit System. The Arcata-Eureka airport (ACV) is about 20 minutes north by car, and they have several daily flights in and out of San Francisco and Portland. Air travel is often delayed due to weather, both here and in SF. Other Things to NoteWe are dog friendly, but we do like to know if you are bringing your dog. Please let us know when you submit your reservation request. We have a 3-4 night minimum on most holidays.

The SpaceThis guest house is situated on a 3/4 acre property in Freshwater. There is one bedroom with a queen size bed and a smaller bedroom that contains a twin size bed. The living room has a futon with a quality full size mattress. Freshwater is a desirable location because it is often sunnier than Arcata or Eureka yet it is still within close proximity of both cities. Passing by horse stables and through the forest sets the tone for the property. We have a large garden where we grow a multitude of fruits and vegetables which we gladly share with our guests. We raise free range egg-laying chickens in our orchard. Guests are often welcomed with some of our chicken eggs. There are deer that pass through and a bunny family can even occasionally be spotted nibbling in the front yard. Guest AccessYou can access the front yard and will have your own parking spot. If we are around, you are welcome to ask to see the chickens or for a tour of our extensive vegetable garden. Interaction with GuestsOur home is right across the driveway. You can have as much privacy as you like. We are often out in our garden and you are welcome to say hello and ask questions about the area. Marlon is a carpenter/woodworker and enjoys talking about gardening and permaculture design. The NeighborhoodFreshwater has a park a few miles up the road which includes a swimming hole and a playground. There is a little market about one mile down the road as well as a very cool farm stand just south of the market. Humboldt County offers endless outdoor activities. Hiking. Water activities. Bird watching. Beach picnics. The list goes on. Getting AroundThis house is perfectly located to explore both Eureka to the south and Arcata to the north. Most local restaurants and attractions are only a 10-15 minute drive from the house. Other Things to NoteWe have a dog. He has his own private fenced off yard.

The SpaceWe call it "The Nifty" because it really is! This is a spacious, pretty and private garden apartment, with direct access to a wonderful backyard, panoramic views and sunsets, and outside fireplace at your doorstep. The Nifty comfortably accommodates up to three people (one queen and one single bed) and has a full kitchen and is well equipped for self-catering and longer stays. The apartment has an indoor toilet and vanity and a private, outside shower/clawfoot tub. Relax and enjoy....nobody's looking :) This apartment comprises part of a larger high end residence, but is fully self contained with it's own entrance and a designated parking space. The house is located in a quiet semi-rural neighborhood overlooking Humboldt Bay, two miles from downtown Arcata and Humboldt State University, and seven miles from downtown Eureka. (If you are looking for a luxurious but fully inside bathroom experience, check out our "Charming Garden Studio, deluxe bath" listing, also located at the same address). Guest AccessWireless internet. Fully equipped kitchen. Organic coffee/tea and breakfast supplies. Linens, bedding, bathrobes. A wonderful big clawfoot tub. Barbeque and backyard fire pit. Sunsets, chickens and a terrific view. Interaction with GuestsBella and Don have lived at this house for the last 13 years, but we have recently moved into the middle of Arcata to fix up a dilapidated but very worthwhile Victorian project house. Other people do live in the house - all professional adults at this stage. That said, we do still manage The Nifty ourselves and are frequently at the property. The NeighborhoodBayside is a sweet neighborhood with a semi-rural feel, just two miles from downtown Arcata and Humboldt State University. If you're up for an adventure, you can hike and mountain bike to your heart's content along miles of trails in the the Arcata community forest (2350 acres) or stay on flatter ground in the Arcata Bottoms and along the Hammond Trail. Fifteen minutes north is the picturesque fishing village of Trinidad with beautiful rocky coves and beaches to explore plus regular sightings of seals, sea lions and whales (in season). The Northcoast Journal is a free weekly publication that has a good summary of current events and opportunities. Getting AroundThe apartment has a designated parking space for a one vehicle. We are two miles from the heart of Arcata and local Transit Center, and 10 miles from the Arcata/Eureka Airport (ACV). Other Things to NoteGuest pricing includes 12% City of Arcata Transient Occupancy Tax. If you have a thing about ever seeing an ant inside, this may not be the space for you. We do have other reliable never-an-indoor-ant options available :)

His focus is on listening to the body and breath, and finding ways to work with the client to exact real change in the muscles and overall health. There's plenty to see and do in the area. Enjoy events such as the Kinetic Sculpture Race, North Country Fair, Film Festivals and weekly farmer's markets. Humboldt county has multiple wine tasting rooms and craft beers. Sit by the fire. Eat under the pear tree. Soak in the tub. Enjoy a little of life unplugged. 'the nifty' (as we call it) is a sweet retreat that can comfortably accommodate up to four people in a back garden setting, close to terrific beaches, forests, downtown arcata and humboldt state university. This unique, spacious and fully equipped apartment is equally well set up for a romantic getaway as it is for a family holiday. The space is cheerful and sunny, set in a quiet back garden environment, with enough room and amenities for you to settle in and get comfortable. It functions well as a home base for those wanting to visit or explore the area, or as a good temporary place to land for those arriving to stay. This apartment comprises part of a larger high end residence, but is fully self-contained with its own entrance and a designated parking space. The space centers around a large open plan kitchen/living/dining room area, with a queen bed tucked away off to the side behind a colorful wall of cabinets. There is a single daybed in the adjoining room and for parties with four guests we can locate another single mattress in the same room as necessary. The full kitchen is well equipped for those who wish to cook, and you are in close proximity to the backyard fire area and picnic table for outdoor dining or barbequing. The toilet and vanity are inside the apartment, while the claw foot tub/shower is located immediately outside, tucked away under the upper deck. For those who haven’t used an outside shower/bath before, you’re in for a treat….Private enough for shy folks, but a nice twist on the usual bathing experience. Bayside is a sweet arcata neighborhood with a semi-rural feel, just two miles from the very center of arcata and humboldt state university, and seven from downtown eureka.

The SpaceThis cabin is tucked behind the main house, both of which are across the road from the park. Two acres allow for lots of exploration for kids or adults, and the timber holdings on three sides mean no unsightly fences or nosy neighbors. There is an abundance of wildlife locally, including raccoon, skunk, deer and even a bear occasionally. Bats in the summer evenings as well. This place is cozy and warm, great for rainy winter nights or relaxing after a day at the creek across the way. Guest AccessThere is gated access, you'll get a remote with your key, to be returned with same. Let us know when you'll be arriving and we'll see that the room is open and waiting for you. Interaction with GuestsWe value your privacy, and will endeavor to stay out of the way, but if you need anything, feel free to ask. We've lived in the area for years and can answer many questions you might have. The NeighborhoodFreshwater, or "Wrangletown" as it was once known, is a little rustic, a little classy, and seems remote despite its proximity to Eureka/Arcata. The main road is bordered by an eclectic assortment of farms, horse great for walks and offers many scenic views. Other Things to NoteHumboldt can be cold and wet in the late fall/winter, but we're lucky to be in the "banana belt" and enjoy lovely summer/early fall weather. Swimming definitely recommended then!
