Our family lives in Beltsville, Maryland, in a quiet neighborhood on the outskirts of Washington, DC. We live in a four-bedroom brick house with our two daughters, ages 15 and 8, and our small dog, Zeus. We have a dining room, living room, family room and large entertainment room downstairs. Besides the national monuments and museums in DC, we live near several lakes and beaches. Sandy Point, the closest beach, is about 45 minutes away. If you drive about 40 minutes north to Baltimore, you can visit a large aquarium and historical sites such as Fort McHenry, birthplace of the U.S. National Anthem. A network of buses and trains also runs from DC to Baltimore.

The SpaceYour private bedroom includes a full-size bed, a small closet, and a work table. It is just across the hall from the shared bathroom and the bedroom occupied by your 2 hosts. Guest AccessYour room is your home base, but you are welcome in any of the common areas of the house, including the finished basement which has a second bathroom and an internet-connected TV. You are free to use anything you find in your room and common areas. This includes the TV, the kitchen, cooking supplies, and any bath necessities you might require. We just ask that you respect the fact that we live here and need to use these things too. . . so please keep the space tidy, and replace any shared supplies that you use up! Your room is also furnished with a window air conditioner and a space heater in case the climate in the house isn't quite to your liking. Interaction with GuestsWe work at the nearby University of Maryland during the day, and are usually home in the evenings. On weekends, we tend to be out and about, but you might see us from time to time. We generally keep to ourselves and let you enjoy your peace and privacy, but if you have questions or concerns, we are happy to help out! Al is a native to Washington, DC, and can share his insider knowledge of things to do in the city! We have two small and friendly dogs who would love to get to know you! Initially their enthusiasm can be a little overwhelming, but they calm down and are pleasant companions to have around. Feel free to take them out in the backyard and play with them! They love attention! The NeighborhoodThis is a pretty quiet residential neighborhood with a diverse mix of families. I have lived here for over 10 years, and I love it! I have always felt safe walking here at night. My neighbors are all very helpful people, so if you meet them, just let them know you're a guest of Valerie. The best thing about College Park is that it's cheaper than staying in the city, but still walkable. Usually it's a 20-minute walk or less to almost anything you might need. Two grocery stores within a mile, and Greenbelt Metro just a 10-minute walk away are the highlights, but there are also a few restaurants, parks, a thrift store, and REI within walking distance. Most people who visit spend their free time in DC, but if you do want to explore College Park, there are a few things you can do (parks, small museums, etc). Getting AroundThe house is a 10-minute walk to Greenbelt Metro Station, which is at the end of DC's Green Line. From Greenbelt, it is a 30-50-minute train ride to most of the DC attractions. At Greenbelt, you can also take advantage of the College Park Bike Share, which you can use to get all around the city of College Park! If you're driving, we're just a mile from I-495 and 95, making it a breeze to get around by car! The nearest bus stop is a 10-minute walk, and from there, you can catch several bus lines that will take you to the University of Maryland campus and up and down Route 1. Coming from an airport and don't have a car? DCA (Reagan) - Take Metro. Yellow Line to Green Line, then Green Line to Greenbelt. Sometimes you can take the Yellow Line all the way to Greenbelt. Takes about 45 minutes. BWI (Baltimore) - The B30 bus travels from BWI to Greenbelt Station. Takes about 35 minutes. It has limited hours, so check before planning on this route. IAD (Dulles) - Ugh, good luck! It takes about 45 minutes to get to Dulles by car, and significantly longer by public transit (I've never done it). You can take the Silver Line (bus) to L'Enfant Plaza, then the Green or Yellow Line (train) to Greenbelt. Other Things to NoteIMPORTANT factors that might impact whether you want to stay here! - Dogs! Our dogs can be annoyingly loud. They cry when we leave in the mornings, and bark whenever someone approaches the house. They might disturb your sleep in the mornings, though they usually keep quiet at night. - Dog fur! With two adorably fluffy dogs comes a lot of dog fur! They shed everywhere! If you are sensitive to dog fur, this is definitely not the place for you. This house is almost as new to us as it is to you, and we are still getting the hang of things! Please let us know if you experience anything of concern during your visit, and provide honest feedback so that we can work to improve the experience for future guests.
