The SpaceA pleasant, welcoming well-insulated room with a private ensuite, double bed and wardrobe. Polished concrete floors with in-floor heating. This space provides a private corner of the house for guests with own entrance if desired. A shared open living and dining area with fantastic unrestricted views of the bay. Laundry service and dinner is negotiable. Breakfast can be continental or cooked if prearranged. We are more than happy to interact with you. We enjoy the company of our visitors. We are also happy to assist in helping you customise your visit to Wellington. Our guest book and reviews are full of enjoyed stays. Our home is in a relaxed seaside community and this is a friendly and safe neighbourhood. The seaside is constantly changing. Seals, dolphins, and orcas have been spotted in the bay by guests; if you are lucky, you might spot something too. Early risers are often wowed by our sunrises and a walk along the bay in the evening for a sunset over the South Island mountain range, the Kaikouras, is spectacular. Buses are within easy walking distance. We have a friendly Schnoodle dog named Jess. A shared open living and dining area with fantastic unrestricted views of the bay. Guest AccessWe welcome you into our own living space and treat you as a member of our household while you are here. We offer you a beverage when you arrive, and give you a continental breakfast as part of the package. Interaction with GuestsWe love hearing about your travels and we also love to help you familiarise yourself with our place and surroundings. We want to know what you are interested in so we can point you in the right direction. We enjoy sitting and chatting or allowing you to have your space if you prefer. The NeighborhoodWe are only 10 minutes from the city. While Wellington harbour is beautiful, the South Coast Marine reserve is spectacular. There is nothing like waking to the sound of the waves, the cry of the gulls and a breakfast with unrestricted sea views. Even on stormy days, the warm underfloor heating keeps your feet warm, while you enjoy the drama outdoors. Getting AroundParking is right outside the house and there are no time limits or costs. We are a 10 minute drive to town. Parking in the city is between $4 and $7 per hour depending on where you go. Some guest like to drive to Island Bay or Brooklyn then free park and take a bus from there. The less regular but closer 5 minute walk bus with 1 changeover takes about 30 minutes to get to town with stops. The longer 20 minute scenic walk is a more regular bus (every 10 minutes). Check the Metlink website for details. Other Things to NoteRachel works full time during the week and Selwyn works two days a week. We recommend a 2-5 night stay is better than one. Often guests use Wellington as a place to pass through while travelling between the North and South Islands. Those who stay one night often regret that choice, realising that there actually is quite a lot to see and do (see our Guidebook). We have had guests return on that basis. We have had longer term guests but suggest you try a week or two and see if our place is for you. We can negotiate rates from then on.

The SpaceThe main building is the original Stables (100 years old) for the mansion (not there now). NB- the sleep-out may not suit more sensitive types as the weather starts to decline going into winter. The building is insulated in the walls but not the roof - there are heaters which are NORMALLY quite adequate but you might get wet/cold going to the toilet! The cabin (or (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN)) is very small - a double bed and small double couch - expect to get cosy in bad weather if there are two people. The main socializing/eating area was intended to be outside! Also note - I am not at this property and you will be left to your own devices most of the time. There are occasions when I will not get to meet you at all as I usually only come by during the day and I know you will be busy doing your own thing... I am just around the corner and can be easily contacted most times Everything provided (bedding/towels, pots/pans. cutlery etc). The yard is shared with another couple where they access their separate upstairs studio in the main building. There is also a cat. No TV reception as such but there is a DVD player and small TV (and selection of DVD's). My wifi now reaches to the sleep out - mostly fine but does have the occasional glitch in which case come to my place around the corner. There are Two older-style mountain bikes available for your use - more info below Guest AccessOff road parking available at least initially while you are getting settled - can be longer on negotiation if needed. Bus stop at top of driveway - the property is on the main bus route to Island Bay so there is a very good service. Can get from here to the CBD in eight minutes on the bike (if you are in a rush) or is same by car (non-rush hour) or 35 minutes walk or about 15 minutes by bus. Interaction with GuestsApart from the occasional visit be prepared to be left to your own devices as generally people are pretty busy doing their own thing. Especially during winter you may not see many people - so at least it is quiet... There is another couple who share the backyard for access to their place (please respect their privacy) and the washing machine is shared with other tenants. I have a workshop in the main building but whether you see me often depends on the weather. The kitchen and toilet area are for your sole use except for the occasional builder-type person who use a lock up out front and may require the toilet during the day. The NeighborhoodIts a mixed bag really. There are a lot of students flatting in the area and the culture can be described as a little "Bohemian" compared to other more affluent suburbs. Newtown provides most shops/supermarkets and a good variety of cafe's and bars and there are also interesting cafes and takeaways at the end of our street. The Town-Belt runs right through this area (and joins many others) as does the Southern Walkway. With associated reserves, zoo, bike tracks etc etc Getting AroundBus stop at top of driveway - the property is on the main bus route to Island Bay so there is a very good service. However by relative standards public transport in New Zealand is not "cheap". Between Berhampore and the City is mostly flat for those who want to use the two bikes. Two bikes available but is a case of what-you-see-is-what-you-get. Last I looked they were both working fine but they are "older" models (note - bikes are not part of price so if you get a puncture please get fixed and return yourselves). Dont stress about replacement value as they would have probably gone to the tip otherwise anyway! I allow 15 minutes when I am biking in to the CBD (but usually do it in 10 minutes) Kilbirnie and the beaches are just over the hill - 2 minutes by car but it is a "big" hill so otherwise a bus might be better than walking. Island Bay is a leisurely straight bike-ride down the main drag for 5 minutes (allow more time for coming home as is uphill slightly). Its about 35 minutes walk to town but 8 minutes by car (lights permitting). Other Things to NoteThere is a dairy and laundromat across the road although a washing machine is available on the property. Takeaways and cafes at the other end of the street. The main shopping area (Newtown) is about 7 minutes walk. Boogie Boards are available if you feel like braving the water and surf at Lyall Bay. Lots of bike tracks, parks, walks etc etc. We are situated half way between the CBD and Island Bay (South Coast) with Lyall and Evans Bay 1km away over the "hill". Wellington Zoo is next door as well.

The SpaceYou will stay in a cosy and light 15sqm beach-style cabin with bathroom, fridge, TV, unlimited VDSL wifi access, and a small table with two stools. To welcome you after your trip and help you settle in you will be greeted with a small bottle of wine in your fridge. Please note: we are redesigning the garden between the house and cabin in November and early December; this should have only a minimal impact on our guests, mostly in terms of access to the cabin. The bathroom was recently refurbished and you will have a very comfortable queen bed (according to other guests) with a heated blanket. You will be 10m across the garden from our house so we are close by if you need assistance or have questions. You have a fridge, Wellington roasted plunger coffee as well as tea-making facilities with a range of teas; while there are plates, bowls and glasses there is no kitchen. Breakfast (a choice of three cereals, joghurts, fruit, and a variety of teas & locally roasted plunger coffee) is provided for you as a self service breakfast in your cabin. We welcome guests with babies and can provide a portacot. We also have baby/toddler toys and books that we are happy to share with visiting babies. Guest AccessYou have your own place across the garden from us which you access from the shared fully-fenced garden. Breakfast (a choice of three cereals, joghurts, fruit and tea/plunger coffee) is provided for you as a self service breakfast in your room. Unfortunately sharing our kitchen is too difficult because our children are still young and they keep our kitchen both busy and in frequent need of a tidy up. Interaction with GuestsWe love having a chat and meeting new people. We also look forward to share our tips about what to do and where to eat around Wellington, as well as further afield. With three young children we are quite busy at times; we hope that you don't mind that sometimes we will unfortunately not be able to stop for a chat. Island Bay is very laid back with a sandy beach, a great arts community and a cool little village (with important amenities such as supermarket, pharmacy, medical centre, bars, restaurants, cafes, as well as great to haves such as a cinema, art galleries, gift shop, book shop, etc) which is 10mins walk from our house. There is a convenience store around the corner from our house (3mins walk), the beach is 5mins walk and the bus stop is 3mins walk. Getting AroundGreat bus service into city centre; starts early in the morning at about 6 am and runs until late at night (about 11pm during week days). The bus to Courtenay Place (many many bars, cafes, restaurants and night clubs as well as stop for Te Papa) takes about 20mins and the bus stop is only 3mins walk away. There is parking available on the street (very safe) in front of house. If you wish to use our lockable garage instead, then please let us know ahead of time. Driving instructions to the house are provided at time of booking. Airport: If you are arriving by taxi from the airport it should cost about NZ$30, take 10- 15 mins and there are always taxis waiting in the arrivals area as you exit the terminal (unless you arrive at about midnight which is when it may take a bit longer for a taxi to arrive). Train station: From the train station (from where long distance busses also arrive and depart) it takes about 20 minutes by taxi but there is also a good bus connection which takes about 45mins to our house. Ferries: The Bluebridge Ferry is next to the train station, so info above applies for Bluebridge, or if you are driving it takes about 20mins. The Interislander Ferry is a further 2 km from the train station so driving takes about 25 mins and there is a shuttle bus to the train station as well as taxis. Other Things to NoteWe offer our guests an in-room self service breakfast of three types of cereals with milk, yoghurt, a piece of fruit and tea/coffee; alternatively bread with spreads is available on request.
