Property and House Description
Huge garden, tall trees, large sunny yard, rose garden, patios, and large house set-back gives you privacy and quiet in a country setting, right in the middle of town, in the heart of North Berkeley close to everything: BART, UC campus, Andronico's, the Cheeseboard Collective, the original Peet's Coffee, Chez Panisse, Cesar, Saul's, Cafe Gratitude, Guerilla Cafe, French Hotel, North Berkeley Farmer's Market, and Gourmet Ghetto restaurants. The house has a WalkScore of 92. (12 minute walk to BART, 6 blocks to UC, 3 blocks to center of Gourmet Ghetto.) Allen Ginsberg might have slept here, had he slept around: we're two doors from where he was inspired to write "Howl," in a similar vintage cottage. His no longer exists.
The house was built in 1904 and has been remodeled bit by bit from the 30's on up to the 80's. Quirky details are everywhere: wavy glass, painted wainscoting, redwood trim, plaster walls, cool period ridge skylights, oak and wide-plank-fir wood floors, cozy dormer windows, a black-n-white kitchen floor, knotty pine kitchen cathedral ceiling, and clear-pine and maple baking center.
Well-stocked kitchen, full bathroom with victorian tub, living room, extensive garden. Kitchen has eat-in nook, separate baking area, granite counters, black and white floor, wood cathedral ceiling, large skylight, dishwasher, gas stove, washer-dryer. Living room has wide Fir floors, traditional trim, and a woodstove.
The house is fully furnished, and has WiFi.
This house is the real deal. It's an old wooden gem with some history. As Stevie Wonder says "Her clothes are old, but never hardly dirty."
The house sits in a comfortable homesteader's plot, as it sat for over a hundred years. From the outside, in a large open green space, you can see the original homestead cottage, with its additions, and also the micro-cottage and the detached shed. From the inside, you get turned around a bit. It is cozy living in the house, but expansive outdoors. As Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck said, "the House is a place to escape the garden when it is raining." To that end, gorgeous divided-light ridge skylights and interior light-ways adorn most rooms. It is light filled, even on foggy mornings.

It currently houses us (Laramie, a musician/techie; and Wendi, a literary/free spirit) and has three private bedrooms for rent exclusively to Airbnb guests for short-term stays. Our guests are kind, quiet, clean, worldly, fun people who are all attracted to chill country living three blocks from the best, most natural, sophisticated food available. Often folks are on special assignment or study at U.C. Berkeley, so we really get well-traveled, smart interesting guests. This is a real plus because on any given night folks will hang out in the kitchen or by the woodstove for fascinating conversations, music, and food; or folks might all curl up in their rooms studying up on gravitron calibration, higher math, or zen philosophy.
When we rent the individual rooms, there will never be more than 6 people total, and probably more like 3 or 4 people total in the house.
This is a household. You'll be sharing the living room, kitchen and bathroom with the house. Everyone has private bedrooms. We are very accommodating, inviting hosts. The house has a bohemian vibe, but is generally pretty quiet, and always very, very clean. We'll work out hours with you to accommodate your needs. In general, things quiet down around 10 PM, but folks who stay here tend to go out on the town or be up late, so there will still be coming and goings until midnight or later. You are welcome to have friends over to hang out in the garden, house, living room, cook meals in the kitchen, etc. If you have requests or needs, please just let us know.
There are four steps up to the property, then a 100' level brick path, then 4 steps up into the house. Main bathroom is on this level. Also, the Cyclotron bedroom is on this level. Up one flight of stairs with two bends are the two larger bedrooms, the "Ginsberg Room," and "Treehouse Studio."
We have gas heat in the house, and additional electric heaters in the rooms. There is also a Jotul woodstove. (These modern, airtight woodstoves are used throughout Scandinavia and New England, and we have one of the same model in our other property in Vermont, where it happily heats a 2000 square foot space with 25' ceilings, even during the cold Vermont winters.) The stove lights in about 15 minutes. We provide dry cord-wood.
There is no off-street parking. You can park on the street in any one spot for 2 hours during 8AM-7PM, outside these hours it is OK. So you have to move by 10 AM, and can return at 5pm. If you need to keep the car longer, you can either move it to another spot, or look for non-permit spots between 1 and 6 blocks away.
We also sell City parking permits for $10 per day, so that you can park on our block all day.
Good dogs welcome! Pet fee is $15 per night. Guest AccessLiving room, kitchen, one shared bathroom with shower and claw-foot tub, garden. Interaction with GuestsI'll be either in the garden, or in the micro-cottage in the garden, or the living room or the kitchen. On cold evenings I'll build a fire in the living room, and this usually draws folks in for conversation, music, or reading by the fire. As a host for many years, I generally sense which guests like to chat, and which guests would just prefer the space they need to relax. Getting AroundOne block from major bus lines which will take you downtown, three blocks from more major bus lines, including the bus to San Francisco. Also, we are 6 blocks from U.C. campus, and a 12 minute walk to downtown, where all the Berkeley bus lines converge, and where the Berkeley BART station is. 12-15 minute walk to North Berkeley BART. Other Things to NoteBooking: Please feel free to request a booking from us, or send a message asking about dates, and we'll respond quickly. In general, we don't do single-night bookings more than two weeks out. So for a single night request, you may wish to message us first.
