The SpaceFor 30 years, we have enjoyed living here, developing our property, and recently decided it would be nice to share it with others across New Zealand and from around the world. In 2008, we built a one bedroom, self contained and elegant cottage which is nestled in New Zealand’s native bush of the Waitakere Ranges on Auckland’s Wild West Coast. Bowing to our Guests’ wishes, YES, we now have cell phone coverage! Guest AccessFull kitchen facilities. All the ingredients supplied for you to cook your own breakfast when you want it! (locally sourced with Lyn's freshly baked bread and fresh fruit juice). Wifi. Sheila's track, your very own bush-walk. Private spa. Airport transfers and local trips on request. Sky TV. Cell phone coverage. A/C. Interaction with GuestsWe are available throughout your stay to provide advice on the area and are always happy to chat about your home. However we leave you in complete privacy unless you want to chat! The NeighborhoodWe love the mix of native bush, sea-views and mix of isolation and accessibility to Auckland central. We are situated on a ridge overlooking Bethell's valley and hidden out of view from our neighbours. However, the locals are good, respectful people. Our road is off the main road and the sounds of the native birds and the wind in the trees is what will keep you company. Getting AroundA 10 minute drive to enjoy a stroll along dramatic Bethells Beach, with its towering cliff-tops, blow-holes, sand dunes and sea caves. The local coastal walks, including a 15 minute walk along the beach to stunning O’Neills Bay (the local surf spot). Other Things to NotePlease contact us with any special requests - we enjoy discussing options, things to do in the area and will be as flexible as we can to ensure your stay is enjoyable, relaxing and memorable!

Close to many excellent walking tracks. Track to the Lake is 5 minutes walk away. Guest AccessYou have your own BBQ deck and lawn plus a carpark. The spa pool is yours and it costs $15.00 per day that you use as I have to heat it with LPG. There is a DVD and a collection of DVD's and books, an IPOD port. Interaction with GuestsWe live on another part of the property and are around and about. Always happy to welcome you if we are nearby and available on the phone for any advice. We are here if you need us but most people who stay end up hanging out at the studio because it is set up for relaxing. The NeighborhoodClassic west coast New Zealand. The stunning Bethells lake is safe swimming and gets lovely and warm in the summer. Great walks in the bush beach sand dunes. You are also right on the Hiliary trail. Interaction with GuestsWe are available throughout your stay (owner's cottage on property) to provide advice on the area and are always happy to chat about your home. However we leave you in complete privacy unless you want to chat! The NeighborhoodBethells Beach has a small but diverse community that treasures the wonderful large wild ironsand and bush beach setting. Adjacent to Auckland city's Waitakere Ranges, Bethells Beach uniquely offers such scenic diversity as large working farms framed by the coastal bush, through to the huge sand dunes of both the beach itself and of the impounded Lake Wainamu. There is the active regional Surf Club based at Bethells, a Park Ranger service and a volunteer fire crew as part of this strong community that survives with no cellphone coverage, no shops and limited broadband services. The local favourite is the seasonal Bethells Cafe, which is open on fine days at the beach carpark, and on Fridays evenings with the ever popular live music thoughtout the summer months. A landline phone is available for local calls (owner's cottage), and free wifi for checking emails/sending message etc. Please note, Broadband reception in the valley is notoriously slow and limited. Getting AroundThere is no public transport to Bethells itself but a bus or train service is available to Auckland city from Swanson, which is 15 minutes drive away. A private vehicle is the best means of reaching this holiday home. Other Things to NoteThis is a self-catering accommodation. There is no local shop within walking distance so you will need to bring all food/drink supplies with you. BBQ is provided. There are two harmless small dogs on the owner's property (chihuahua and a minature schnauzer).

The SpaceThis is one of the few places left that is free from cell phone frequencies & wi-fi-. There is broadband internet access here which is a good service (it is wired in instead of wireless ). It is available on request at the main house which is just close by . The shower is heated by gas & solar panel, cooking is by gas .Everything is designed to have minimum impact on the environment . I supply eco products for use in the shower & kitchen area. This is a great way of getting back in touch with nature . It is a great place to meditate, write, relax & get some good quality sleep. It is a real eco retreat. The kitchen & living area is under cover & private yet open on 2 sides to the beauties of the natural environment. There are no street lights, so you can really enjoy the stars to the full.We are in a heritage /conservation area & birdsong is the music here. So stress-free & healthy yet only 35 mins from Auckland city. Guest AccessThere is a broadband connection in the main house which guests may use by arrangement. There are many beautiful places to walk & sit on the land where you are free to wander(making sure to close the gates so the goats & sheep don't get out!) Interaction with GuestsI live in the main house, so I will be there to greet the guests & offer information on all the local areas of interest. I enjoy being helpful & friendly yet am also happy to allow the guests to have complete privacy if that is what is needed. Breakfast is provided on request for an additional cost The Neighborhood6 mins drive to the most amazing beach.A good surf beach. Also great bush walks. The Hilary track goes through Bethells & this is a good spot to stop over if you are doing the whole walk. In the summer, there is the Bethells mobile cafe & music on the beach on Friday evenings Getting AroundThe train station is 6 mins drive away where you can get the train to Hendreson or Auckland.I am happy to take people to the train station if I am available, From the airport, once you get to Auckland city centre, you can take the train from Britomart station to Waitakere station & then I will pick you up at a pre-arranged time. Free parking is available on the property If you are doing the Hillary Track walk I will arrange to pick you up from the lake carpark (the track passes by this way) Otherwise, there is a great local community who seem to be happy to give people lifts to & from the beach, walking tracks & the train station. If you are fit then you can use the bike I have here. Other Things to NotePacked lunch &/or dinner is available on request for an additional charge. The same applies with use of the washing machine.

The NeighborhoodA 2 minute walk across the adjacent reserve brings you to the black sands of Te Henga and the thunder of the Tasman Sea as it meets the shore. A half hour walk will take you to O'neill Bay, a popular surf beach. You can reach this beach by using part of the world Famous 'Hillary Trail', travelling along the lower part of Taumaiti. Check out the views on the way. Return along the beach, crossing the Waitakere Stream. Head half an hour inland and you will find yourself at Lake Wainamu, a fresh water lake, locked between the foothills of the Waitakere Ranges and a giant sand dune. This is a popular swimming destination when the ocean beach is not patrolled by lifeguards, or for people who prefer the calm of the lake. Getting AroundTe Henga/Bethells Beach is a 45 minute drive from downtown Auckland. There is no public transport servicing the area. The nearest train station is in Swanson, about 12km away. The nearest shopping areas are also around 12km away in Swanson or Massey. Other Things to NoteDue to the appallingly slow internet speed in our area, I've decided to take it off the list of our amenities. I have left a guide to using the wireless router in the house, but watching or listening to any kind of online media is not really viable. Sorry. There are no regular cafes or shops in the area, so it's wise to to your shopping before you arrive. The good news is if your stay is over the summer, the Bethells Cafe runs on weekends. Friday nights feature live music from great local and international artists. Take a beach chair, (we have some at the house) your favourite beverage and sample a world famous 'West Coast Burger', sit back and enjoy!

The Māori name Te Henga, meaning sand, originally applied to a wide area of the lower Waitakere River valley, but in 1976 the New Zealand Geographic Board changed the name of the beach from Bethells Beach to Te Henga (Bethells Beach). The beach is approximately 30 kilometres north-west of Auckland City, at the mouth of the Waitakere River where it flows into the Tasman Sea. Getting AroundUse a car to get to Bethells Beach, or a train to Henderson and a Cab to the beach (around 15 minute drive). Once you're in Bethells, you can bike, walk or dirt bike (if you're into motorbikes). Parking is limited at the beach during the summer as it's a popular place for locals. Other Things to NoteSurfing is the main pastime. Other pastimes include parasailing and hang gliding, for which the prevailing westerly wind often provides favourable conditions. Fishing is also popular. Bush walking is encouraged, with boardwalks in place. Sunbathing, swimming, picnics, running etc. Skimboarding is also becoming quite popular. In the summer there is a daytime cafe/trailer and jazz music each week on the beach. The house is 40 minutes from downtown Auckland and 15 minutes from Henderson town and the train station. The nearest Grocery store is approx 10 minutes drive.
