The birds can be seen around the campsite, Crater Lake shores, swamps, gardens and agricultural plantations. Get to know the friendly local sellers and sharpen your bartering skills. There is always a large choice of fresh organic vegetables/food and a huge selection of second-hand clothes. Take a walk around the crater lakes in search for the hippo. With a little luck you will see an open-mouthed hippo and capture it on your camera. Take a guided walk through our local villages. Meet and greet villagers and learn about our unique Ugandan culture and traditions. Learn about local brew preparation and coffee activities including coffee growing and harvesting. Enjoy a guided walk through Lake Nyabikere and swamp wetland area, learning about the monkeys, birds and trees found in our Nature Reserve. The lake offers opportunities for boating and fishing. The SpaceThe main house has 2 double bedrooms and an attic which may accommodate up to 4 people. There is a shower,toilet and further separated bathroom. Open plan kitchen with two dinning areas and three outside verandas surrounded by herbs and flowers. The two free standing cottages accommodate a further 1-4 people. They have private eco toilet and showers&verandas overlooking the crater lake. All the cottages are self catering with BBQ facilities. Tents are also available for other guests if desired. Guest AccessYou are welcome to feel at home! This is a stress free zone with no rules apart from good will and friendliness towards people and the eco-system! Interaction with GuestsI will normally greet all guests and am around to help and advise on the local area. The house is off the beaten track but local transport can be arranged and nearby villages offer basic supplies, and guides or bicycles are available on request. The NeighborhoodThe house is located in its own lush gardens,close to a road and villages, upmarket lodges and local shops, market and bars. You can easily walk or bike to local tourist attractions and it is an ideal stop off while on safari. On the edge of a lake there is an abundance of birds, butterflies, and wildlife,perfect for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility and an escape from the hustle of urban life. Getting AroundLocated 30km from Fort Portal, Ayapapa is accessible by bodaboda, taxi's or by foot from local campsites. The website has full directions for how to get there, the nieghbourhood is very friendly and you can always ask others to direct you! Other Things to NoteOften people plan to stay for 2 nights but end up extending their stay! Given the distance from Fort Portal, it is worth bringing some supplies with you.       The SpaceKaikusa Hill Lodge is strategically located near Kibale National Park and close to the newly sealed Kamwenge-Fort Portal Highway. It is 7kms south of the chimpanzee viewing site at Kanyanchu Tourist Centre. The Lodge is accessible by a well maintained track from Bigodi Trading Centre all year round. The track to the Lodge winds through the forest and village to the top of Kaikusa Hill where a scenic view of the snow-capped Mountains of the Moon, the Rwenzoris greets the visitor. Kaikusa Hill also overlooks the tropical rain forests of Kibale National Park and Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. An elevated platform for visitors has been constructed at the Lodge to enhance the viewing experience of this delightful panorama. The four self-contained Detached Cottages, each 25sq m, have comfortable queen beds, en-suite facilities and verandas with table & chairs. Water is fetched manually from the nearby spring and supplied to the elevated 5,000 litre plastic tank. Each 20-litre jerrycan costs Ugx 500/=. A pump can be installed when justified and rain water collected from the roofs. Lighting in the cottages is provided currently by hand-held solar lanterns. A small (6w) solar system is installed at the bar/restaurant. Although the owner would prefer power to be supplied in the form of renewable energy, there is potential for connecting the entire Lodge to the main national grid. The Restaurant & Bar, 90sqm with thatched roof, is furnished with rattan tables and chairs. There is a new freezer (220v) with an internal capacity of 400 litres. The freezer is temporarily being kept at Bigodi town where there is power from the main grid. The neighbouring lush rain forest of Kibale is well known for the highest density and diversity of primate species on the African continent especially chimpanzees. The area, together with the Bigodi wetlands, is also renowned for its enormous variety of bird species, endemic red colobus monkeys and small antelopes. Many of the fauna can be seen in the vicinity of Kaikusa Hill. Among the birds are the great blue turaco, papyrus gonoleks, hornbills, waxbills, weavers, cuckoos, kingfishers and flycatchers. The flora is also most interesting with some exotic trees, tropical plants and shrubs dotted all over Kaikusa Hill and the surrounding area. If you prefer to travel by air, it is a short 40 minute flight from Entebbe/Kajjansi airstrip.
