Description
The Space

Kaikusa Hill Lodge is strategically located near Kibale National Park and close to the newly sealed Kamwenge-Fort Portal Highway. It is 7kms south of the chimpanzee viewing site at Kanyanchu Tourist Centre. The Lodge is accessible by a well maintained track from Bigodi Trading Centre all year round. The track to the Lodge winds through the forest and village to the top of Kaikusa Hill where a scenic view of the snow-capped Mountains of the Moon, the Rwenzoris greets the visitor. Kaikusa Hill also overlooks the tropical rain forests of Kibale National Park and Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. An elevated platform for visitors has been constructed at the Lodge to enhance the viewing experience of this delightful panorama. The four self-contained Detached Cottages, each 25sq m, have comfortable queen beds, en-suite facilities and verandas with table & chairs. Water is fetched manually from the nearby spring and supplied to the elevated 5,000 litre plastic tank. Each 20-litre jerrycan costs Ugx 500/=. A pump can be installed when justified and rain water collected from the roofs. Lighting in the cottages is provided currently by hand-held solar lanterns. A small (6w) solar system is installed at the bar/restaurant. Although the owner would prefer power to be supplied in the form of renewable energy, there is potential for connecting the entire Lodge to the main national grid. The Restaurant & Bar, 90sqm with thatched roof, is furnished with rattan tables and chairs. There is a new freezer (220v) with an internal capacity of 400 litres. The freezer is temporarily being kept at Bigodi town where there is power from the main grid. The neighbouring lush rain forest of Kibale is well known for the highest density and diversity of primate species on the African continent especially chimpanzees. The area, together with the Bigodi wetlands, is also renowned for its enormous variety of bird species, endemic red colobus monkeys and small antelopes. Many of the fauna can be seen in the vicinity of Kaikusa Hill. Among the birds are the great blue turaco, papyrus gonoleks, hornbills, waxbills, weavers, cuckoos, kingfishers and flycatchers. The flora is also most interesting with some exotic trees, tropical plants and shrubs dotted all over Kaikusa Hill and the surrounding area.
