The SpacePerfect for a romantic get away or just a personal retreat. The entrance opens into a private hallway which divides the guest suite from the rest of the house. The room has a Bavarian flavor with a timbered ceiling and a fluffy, white, New Zealand wool rug. For your convenience, enjoy your own mini fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and hairdryer. The large private tile bathroom is attached to the bedroom. The shower is large enough for two with overhead and hand held showerheads! Guest AccessFront porch, bedroom and bath. Interaction with GuestsI have loved living here for 15 years and will be happy to answer questions about the area and provide you with information about local restaurants, attractions and events if you ask. I respect your privacy but will check in with you each evening to see if there is anything you need. The NeighborhoodThis is a beautiful neighborhood about 1,000 feet higher than Boone. That means we enjoy cool mountain breezes throughout the summer. We enjoy beautiful views as we are near the top of Ski Mountain. Most of our neighbors are seasonal residents so it is very peaceful up here. There is a gorgeous hike right from my neighborhood to the firewatch tower in Moses Cone Park (about 45 min each way) In the summer we are close enough to hear Tweetsie's haunting train whistle and many hiking and biking trails. Whitewater rafting outfitters are nearby as well. We are also just 15 minutes from 50 restaurants. We are only a few minutes from Appalachian Ski Resort and about a half hour from Beech and Sugar ski resorts. There is so much to do here year round! Just ask.... Getting AroundThe road is paved but 4 wheel drive is strongly recommended in the winter even though the road is scraped every day that there is snow. We have a one way horseshoe driveway that has a fairly steep descent then an easy exit. If possible, check in before dark. We will turn on the outside lighting including lights to mark the driveway entrance but there are no street lights up here on the mountain. Other Things to NoteParking is available right by your private entrance. I have a small dog but she will be kept upstairs. There are also two permanent tenants on the lower level but they also have private entrances and you probably will not notice they are there.

The SpaceThe condo is located atop one of the highest mountain peaks in eastern Northern America. It sits upon the grounds of The Art of Living Retreat Center, which (for extra charge) offers dining, Ayurvedic Spa services, yoga and meditation classes, hiking, and more. This condo serves as an awe-inspiring getaway, with breathtaking one-hundred mile views. Ideal for a couple, but there is a comfortable couch, and a twin mattress upstairs if you have children. I just installed a portable air conditioning unit upstairs. On heavenly mountain central air is virtually unheard of. But in the summer, it can get a little warm in the afternoon, so I bought one for you. Early reports have been very positive in its ability to cool the loft considerably, and help a bit with the lower rooms. There is a ceiling fan, and a big fan as well. Also, there is a big desk with executive chair, laser printer and basic office supplies -- ideal for getting a lot of work done. The building has 12 condos, but only four of them are presently occupied. It is very quiet. Occasionally there is someone next door -- occasionally, there is not. And the front porch is spacious, but occasionally shared. Guest AccessIt is important that I get you a document with entry information, what to bring/what is provided, directions, FAQs, etc. before you check in. But the air bnb server prevents attached documents, so we need to exchange personal email addresses. If you don't want to cook or drive into town, the Art Of Living Retreat Center dining hall serves three delicious vegetarian buffet meals a day for around 15-20$ It's the big yellow building two doors down. Interaction with GuestsI currently reside in Dallas, TX. I am easily available through phone, text and email. The NeighborhoodThe Shankara Spa is a three minute ride down the road. Call ahead, as they get busy on weekends. This is one of only a handful of authentic Aryuvedic spas in the nation. They have a steam room and fitness facilities that you can use if you are getting a treatment. Also, there is a pottery studio just a few doors down from me. People love it -- highly recommended. I have the flyer/contact info in my condo. The AOLRC has yoga and meditation classes daily, by appointment in the big yellow dining hall, and every evening, a kirtan jam session open to everyone. There's also a very nice gift shop and a spiritual book store and a small coffee shop. If nothing else, walk over there and stand on the porch -- for one of the best views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, anywhere. Getting AroundIf you want to use my mountain bike to scoot around the AOLRC property -- it's all yours. There is a tire pump in the back of the closet. Other Things to NoteContact me if you are interested in the two hikes featured in the photographs. As far as the Art Of Living Retreat Center: I own my condo, and is completely independent. The groups and retreats are on the other side of the property, so you likely won't even notice them. That said, if you want to enjoy any of their scheduled activities or facilities, that is easy to arrange. (URL HIDDEN)

The Suddreth Cottage combines the charm of a historic home with comfortable modern amenities within the village of Blowing Rock and walking distance to all Main Street shops, restaurants, and attractions. Originally built in the early 1900s, this Mission-style bungalow with a large front yard was once one of many lining the main road through old Blowing Rock. Now this lovely Arts & Crafts home is one of very few remaining, and great care was taken in the restoration of this beautiful home. The inside features original pine wood floors, walls made of antique wormy chestnut, and old-fashioned wind-catcher windows made of wavy glass. Step through the back door of the home into the kitchen which is equipped with all the modern appliances and stocked with every gadget you may need. The floor has a beautiful faux rug, hand painted by the owner-artist, and the walls have dried flowers embedded in the stucco, all lending warmth to the room. There is a table with three chairs in the kitchen, and just off the kitchen is a day room with an additional round table for four more chairs under a beautiful Tiffany light fixture. A twin bed with a high-quality mattress lines one wall where guests can lounge with a book or curl up for a nap. This room also has an antique book cabinet with a selection of board games, and adorning the wall is one of the earliest known pictures of The Blowing Rock attraction. Off the day room is the master bedroom suite. This room was added later, around the 1950s, and this room features a queen bed in a frame custom made of quarter-sawn oak wood, a flat screen TV, a bedside table handmade by the owner-artistr, and a private bath with a tub/shower. On the other side of the kitchen is a door to the original bathroom of the home. Carefully restored to be just as it was in the early 1900s, this room has a claw foot bathtub (no shower), a sink with individual spigots for hot and cold water, an original glass towel rod, and a toilet with a pull chain to flush. Enter the living room from the bathroom or dayroom. This warm, welcoming room is dominated by a floor-to-ceiling gas-log fireplace made of free-stacked stone quarried from nearby Grandfather Mountain. The leather furnishings surround the fireplace and its neighboring 32-inch flatscreen TV. Also here are a DVD player, 5-disc CD player, and classic stereo radio. A Tiffany lamp hangs overhead, and the two exposed beams running across the ceiling have artful indirect lighting attached. The hand-woven rug covers the floor, and there are handmade afghans to snuggle up in. Also in this room is a copy of Historic & Architectural Homes of Watauga County, featuring this cottage, as well as a history of the home itself. Upstairs are two bedrooms. The room to the left at the top of the stairs has two full beds in custom frames commissioned by a once prominent innkeeper in Blowing Rock. This bedroom has a skylight as well as a small landing with balcony overlooking the living room where children of all ages may enjoy putting on mini performances for their fellow guests. The other bedroom has a Queen bed with an antique armoire and an exposed-beam ceiling. All three bedrooms in the home have cozy down/feather linens and comforters. Antique Norman Rockwell artwork decorate these two bedrooms. The bathroom at the end of the hall was also added in the 1950s and contains a tub/shower, an antique wash table, copper mirror lamps, and two large closets for additional storage space. The covered front porch of the home faces Main Street. Enjoy the tranquility and peaceful views of our wonderful town from the handmade gliders as you watch people stroll by. On the back porch, you can barbeque dinner on the gas grill. And the laundry room with the washer and dryer and some yard games including croquet and Frisbee is here as well. Enjoy playing games in the large, gently sloping yard in front of the home. The garden behind the home features a pergola and gazebo with lounging chairs, with ivy growing the posts of the gazebo. Rock walls line the edge of the garden, and an original stone path winds around the side of the house, all made of rock also quarried from Grandfather Mountain. Many traditional medicinal plants as well as savory herbs are grown here, and you are encouraged to pinch off any you need. The gardens have been featured on several Blowing Rock Garden Tours, conducted by the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce. The home is perfectly located in downtown Blowing Rock, within walking distance to all that the town has to offer. Great for puzzles, games, cards, an at home office or a great place to stash the kids ! We have a lot of puzzles and games for all ages. I love when people tell me how much they have enjoying playing games with their kids. A favorite is Catopoly, its like Monopoly but with cats. We have a kid guard that can be put at the top of the stairs to keep little ones from falling down. It is in the utility room behind the kitchen. It is also good to keep little ones on or off the deck. There is access to a small deck on the lower level with an old fashioned couples swing that is entered from the den.Wild life is often seen from here. We have deer and wild turkeys on the property. We have seen the fox last night and this morning. It is a pretty thing with a red body and a big fluffy grey tail There is a bird feeder at the parking level where all the mountain birds and squirrels gather. I try to keep bird seed here, but if you run out they like the kind with nuts and berries best. Twice I have seen a flock of Indigo Buntings and once a Scarlet tanager. Humming birds abound at the feeders. There is sugar and a recipe for Humming Bird Cocktail in the kitchen. If you make it they will come. Leo's bedroom is on the lower level. It has a metal canopy queen sized bed and an updated bathroom with tub and shower. Everything on this floor is new because of a water leak which flooded the whole space. Down Cats Pause Lane is the gazebo and a hammock. There is large deck on the main level. There is an outside dinning area here and comfy chairs and a lounger that Ed built for this deck. The gas grill in under the covered porch. If it rains just take the table up to the covered porch. I know everyone thinks their mountain home is the best. We are no exception. If you read our guest books you will see that a lots of visitors agree.(Don't forget to sign before you leave.) Ed and I spend a lot of time keeping it comfortable and in good repair.I am on the job keeping everything super clean. Our goal is to always have something new and better every time you visit. You will notice that we do not charge a cleaning fee. All we ask is that you use it gently as if it were your own. Extra dirt or messes that require extra cleaning or repair will be charged a cleaning/damage fee. The theme for Cats Pause is CATS. This will alert you that there will be lots of fun cat stuff there. We are sorry we cannot allow live cats to visit. But we hope you will, soon. Things Are Always Purrfect at Cats Pause! Warm Regards, Ed and Mary Parks Cats Pause is not in a rental area. There are only four homes on Buff Ridge Rd and each is on at least an acre. Guest say we are private without being isolated. If you walk you will meet our neighbors. They will help you if you need help, they will take you to church if you want to go and they will leave you alone if that is what you want. They are everything that is good about these mountains. We over look the Blue Ridge Parkway. Access is less than a mile away. The view is deep and wide. The mountains in the distance are in Virginia. We often see deer, turkey, fox, squirrel, chipmunks, hummingbirds, native birds and migrating birds.

The Story Behind the Name: Our family has been coming to Blowing Rock for close to 20 years now. It started when we would come the day after Thanksgiving, to cut down our Christmas tree with our three kids. We would then gather in the park at night and sing carols and roast marshmallows. Truly a Norman Rockwell Painting. As the kids grew, we would come up for Christmas to ski and then snowboard, at Appalachian Ski Mountain and go to Bistro Roca for our family dinner. In the summers, we would go white water rafting, hiking and always make our way to Kilwins. In the fall, we came to see the leaves change and go to Tweetsie.  Our kids are now grown and starting their own lives. The sound of their laugher, how sweet the sound, is tucked in our hearts forever.
