The SpaceThe house is over 110 years old and has been recently updated yet still retains much of it's old charm and character. The house is large and has a modern kitchen. The home is private and quiet and you will have exclusive access during your stay, you will not be sharing the home with anyone. There is high speed Internet/WiFi, basic cable TV, a blue-ray/DVD/PS3 game player, and a Chromecast. It's a great place to relax and unwind and to enjoy the beautiful views and wildlife. Guest AccessThe base price of this listing is for the full downstairs (approx 1600 sq ft) which includes 1 queen bedroom, 1 full bathroom (with claw-foot tub/shower), a living room, a dining room, a den with wood-stove, and a modern kitchen with dining bar and additional dining table. There is also a large deck out back with a gas grill, and a large front porch. This area is very roomy and perfect for 1 couple. Access to the 4 upstairs bedrooms (1 king, 1 queen, 1 full, and 1 queen futon) and 2nd full bathroom is included as you add more guests. The queen futon bedroom is semi-private as it is usually (but not always) used for the primary access to the upstairs bathroom. A Keurig coffee maker (with supplies for your first day for your group) is available for your use. There is a baby crib available in the master bedroom upstairs. Interaction with GuestsThere is minimal host interaction but we do try to meet you upon arrival if possible. After that it's all yours. Our goal is to be as attentive as possible to your needs and privacy without being intrusive; we are available if needed. Please note that we rarely stop by during your visit but if we ever do then we will text you before we come over. The NeighborhoodThe house is located on a ridge above Harpers Ferry, WV. The neighborhood is quiet with very little traffic and has very nice views. The property is about 1 acre, mostly wooded in back and borders the Harpers Ferry National Park with lots of woods and trails. Bolivar Heights Battlefield is a very short walk down the street. It is about 2 miles (all downhill) to the lower town historic district and to the C&O Canal National Park. You can easily hike, bike, ride, or drive to the property from almost anywhere. Getting AroundIt's about a mile to the nearest restaurant or convenience store. There is limited bus transportation nearby (PanTran). There are more restaurants and shopping about 3-5 miles away. There are lots of antique markets in the area. Many wineries are nearby too. It's a great area to hike & bike. DC is about 60 miles by car or bike (C&O canal). There is AMTRAC and MARC train service in town (if you need a lift from the station we may be able to facilitate if given enough notice). Having wheels of some sort (car, motorcycle, bicycle, etc.) is highly recommended. Other Things to NoteTax and and cleaning fees are included in the price - we have no additional charges. There is a 3-night minimum stay for holiday weekends. And like we said above, it's a great place to relax and unwind. But if relaxation isn't your thing, it's also a great base for your hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, rock-climbing, wine-tasting, dining, or other adventure. All these activities and more are just a few minutes away. Bring your bikes, boats, ropes, and/or hiking boots. And don't forget your fishing pole if you're into that too. It really is a great place for just chilling out on the front porch or back deck or by the wood stove in the winter. The breezes and views up here on the ridge are wonderful.

The SpaceThe apartment has a spacious MBR with queen bed and a second bedroom with twin. There is a loveseat that folds out into basically a mattress on the floor, mostly suitable for kids or young people. There is no separate dining room - the kitchen has an extra counter with barstools. The living room has a TV/DVD player. Guest AccessRoam the grounds, light a fire and sit around the campfire ring, relax in the hammock, use the swing, or jump on the trampoline. If you're lucky you may hear owls or coyotes or a fox in season. The barn cats will greet you and love any pets you're willing to give. There are two chairs by the campfire ring, and extra folding chairs in the barn loft. Interaction with GuestsWe live on the property, in the house above the barn. Let us know if you'd like to meet. We have children--and they love to meet and play with all our guests, but they are especially thrilled to find out when guests are coming with kids. Feel free to ask us anything you'd like to know about the area. The NeighborhoodNotaviva Vineyards is owned by our friends the Mackeys and is a "must see," especially if one of their events is happening during your stay. They are a walkable distance from us. There are many other local attractions and recreation spots within a few minutes drive. We're particularly fond of the folks at Breaux, 868 and Grandale Farm Restaurant. For water fun we recommend River and Trail Outfitters or the Harpers Ferry Adventure Center. They also have a neat "canopy tour," ropes course, and zip line experience. Getting AroundYou can get here by car. That's pretty much it. We've never yet had a guest arrive by helicopter. If that's your preference, there's a decent-sized grass field which might serve as an ersatz heliport. Use at your own risk, though; note there's no aviation fuel available on-site. Other Things to NoteThe thermostat is in the hallway - feel free to adjust it for comfort.

The SpaceThe house is tucked away into a wooded alcove at the base of a small heavily wooded ridge. At its front it faces a broad meadow and the northern end of the Blue Ridge mountains. The Ridge is low at this point, but the cloud formations and sky can be dramatic both at sunrise and sunset. Being forested and secluded, you'll see a lot of deer and birds, the occasional fox and wild turkey, and the usual squirrels and groundhogs! There is a also a small naturalized fish pond on the property and a porch from which you can observe it all. Guest AccessGuests will have full and private access to the apartment, as described, but not to the main house. The wooded area on the property is available for hiking, though the only trails are those the deer make. It's best to bring your gps when you go into the woods. Interaction with GuestsIn case your host, Jim, is not available, your co-host, Sally, will greet you, make sure you're comfortable, and provide you the information you need to thoroughly enjoy your stay. The NeighborhoodThe immediate neighborhood is mostly rural, composed of small working farms. The wider area is country residential with population pockets in Harpers Ferry, Charles Town, and Shepherdstown. These communities cater to both full-year residents and a booming tourist industry. If you need to do grocery or essentials shopping, you can pick up many common items at the Bakerton Mall, a small general store a mile from the house. For more extensive shopping you'll want to go to Charles Town (about 8 miles away), where you'll find a 24 hour Martins grocery, a Walmart, and a Home Depot. Charles Town is also the location of the Hollywood Casino and race track. Harpers Ferry itself is the headquarters of the HF National Historical Park and the Appalachian Trail. You'll also find access to popular river rafting outfits in the vicinity. Shepherdstown (about 8 miles), the oldest city in WV, is a progressive community with a rich historic, artistic and cultural life. You'll find restaurants, theater, nightlife, galleries, shops, and friends. Getting AroundThere is no local public transportation network in Jefferson Co, WV, so you'll need to come in by car. There is some limited Amtrak service and MARC service from DC to Harpers Ferry. And it is possible to get a cab or Uber from the train station. Car rentals are available in Charles Town. Other Things to NoteThe kitchen is equipped with a small all-in-one stove, refrigerator, and sink unit; a toaster oven; coffee maker; and microwave. There are dishes, silverware, pots and pans, etc. The freezer in the refrigerator is small and won't accommodate a lot of food. Unfortunately, there is no laundry available.
