The SpaceThis is for travellers who want to experience what it is like to live in the bush using ingenuity and materials to hand. It is not the place for you if you are only comfortable in gleaming laminex kitchen and bathrooms. The owner is a farmer and gardener who prefers to be outdoors and offers produce from her garden and hens and milk from her goats according to the season. The Jingallala River is three minutes walk from the house and the iconic Snowy River is three quarters of an hour's drive at McKillops Bridge. My property borders Snowy River National Park and is less than an hour's drive from the rainforests of the Errinundra National Park. Due to distance from the nearest town, meals apart from breakfast (included in price) can be provided by arrangement at extra charge and/or guests can cook their own food. Bathroom and toilet are shared, there is plenty of hot rainwater, excellent for skin and hair. I have two dogs which are allowed in if they behave, but sleep outside at night. There is plenty of parking, wireless internet access and power comes from a standalone solar system. Water is tanked from the roof or pumped from the river. This is a chance to experience sustainable living and to explore some of the world's most pristine forests and rivers. My house has two double beds and one single; the occasional extra person can be accommodated on spare mattresses. This is my home, entirely separate from any municipal services, so expect a rustic experience! Please be aware that I do not have a flushing toilet. Travellers also need to know that my property was heavily burned on February 9th 2014 so the bush experience has been blackened and opened up. The fire spared my house and vegetable garden due to some judicious preparation but burned the manna gum forest around it. There is beauty of a sort in a burned forest and regeneration is good for the soul. Guest AccessMy home is yours while you are here. Its humble but welcoming. Interaction with GuestsThis is my home so it is difficult to avoid me during your stay. If you want total privacy, please bring a tent. I'll take my cue from you, in regard to how much interaction you want. On the other hand, most people enjoy eating the meals I cook and there is nowhere to go out for a take-away. So I suggest you book in for the full treatment (i.e. dinner and breakfast) for $75/night and then you don't need to do anything but relax. The NeighborhoodThis is an isolated rural community. I get on well with my neighbours but I have to cross a river to see them! One needs to be pretty self-sufficient around here. Getting AroundSadly there is no public transport to Bonang. There is a bus from Canberra to Delegate and to Orbost from Melbourne. On arrangement, I can pick you up. Other Things to NoteThis isn't for you if you don't like the bush. There can be snakes in summer and non-poisonous spiders are not unwelcome in my home. It can be confronting to use a toilet that doesn't flush - but its also handy to confront these things. I take great pleasure in minimising my ecological footprint and invite you to share this journey, if only for a short time.

The SpaceThe house is two storey, with the two main bedrooms on the ground floor (one with a double bed and the other with two singles) and two bedrooms / four beds up a steep flight of carpeted steps in the attic. The kitchen is in a split-level extension and a features oven, grill and cookers — all gas. There is also a kettle, microwave, fridge, freezer and an electric jug and a good range of cooking implements. The television is inside the cabinet in the living room and has a good range of digital free to air channels, plus a DVD player attached (and a selection of DVDs in the second living room). Next door is Bombala's Anglican Church, making this a perfect spot for people attending weddings. The location is quiet, and the garden is so enormous it's impossible to photograph in one shot! Guest AccessThe house is yours to come and go as you wish as the key is kept in a lock-box (we will give you the code when you book). Just leave the key back in the lock-box and scramble the code each time you access it. Interaction with GuestsWe live around 20km away (where we run a little outback fishing cottage called "Cochabonddu", which is not on Airbnb but which, like "Boonah" you can find via a simple internet query). You are however very welcome to phone or email us if there are any problems or if you need any help or advice. The NeighborhoodBombala ("meeting of the waters" in the indigenous dialect) was proposed as Australia's capital in 1903 due to its geographical location halfway between Melbourne and Sydney. In the House of Representatives in October 1903, King O’Malley declared: ‘If ever there was a spot set apart by the Creator to be the capital of this great Australia—the pivot around which [...] civilisation should revolve—it is Bombala ... I could almost see the Garden of Eden at Bombala. I could see Adam & Eve leaving after they had eaten of the Tree of Life—for the Tree of Life is growing there today’. That never eventuated (it lost to Canberra 33 votes to 39), but today it's a charming and friendly little town with its main street ("Maybe Street") running parallel to the river. Getting AroundThe town's post office, National Parks office and two supermarkets are a 5 minute walk down the main street. A beautiful loop-walk along the river (an off-leash area for dogs) begins at the end of the street and takes you past possible platypus viewing spots (best seen at dusk and dawn; or there's a Platypus reserve a short drive out of town too, turn right off Delegate Rd a couple of minutes after leaving town). Other Things to NoteThere's no internet connection but there's very fast Telstra 3G/4G (over 65/20Mbps speed!) and Optus mobile broadband reception if you have an account. The town library (4 mins walk away) offers free internet upon registration, or the RSL Club has free internet as well, no signup or password required. Please take care when coming down the attic steps (the small plastic duck is there to remind you to duck!), and do not leave small children unattended on the deck due to the risk of falling off the edge.

The SpaceRecently built, it still has a few finishing touches to complete but is fully functional. In winter this is warm, having double glazed windows and being well insulated all round. The wood stove cooks meals and keeps the place cosy. The upstairs bedroom has a double bed, and there is an optional pull-out single sofa bed downstairs. Bathroom and laundry are off the verandah, with an inside/outside pan toilet at the end (certain considerations are needed). The kitchen has a wood stove plus a double burner gas stove for cooking, a small 40 litre fridge and a cool room. There is a small study nook as well as a 2 seater lounge to flop on. Interaction with GuestsTo make contact with the host or ask a question just cooee out and wander over (calling out out is the 'country doorbell'). I'm just 80 metres away behind the sheds and chook yard. The NeighborhoodGoongerah is a small isolated valley, 70km north of Orbost and the one road through the settlement heads into NSW, Canberra or the snow fields. It is surrounded by forests and wildlife. The community of about 40 people has one school, a phone box, a CFA shed and a hall. Most people are interested in growing their own food, using renewable energy and have a fairly progressive and environmental outlook. The nearest shops are a long drive so please come with all your needs, and even a spare jerry of fuel if you intend to visit the parks. Getting AroundThe road into Goongerah is all weather and suitable for 2WDs. Bitumen from the Sth and a stretch of dirt road to the north for 20 km or so. To visit the Errinundra, all roads are open in summer but there can be winter road closures. There is no public transport closer than Orbost, so your own transport is essential. Other Things to NoteThere is no mobile phone reception here, and no TV or wi-fi. Goongerah is in a black spot, being deep in the hills. The host's landline can be used if necessary though for taking messages or making calls. A phone box is also 1km up the road at the hall. Goongerah is nestled between two national parks - the Errinudra to the east and the Snowy to the west. The tree-lined Brodribb River runs along the edge of the property and is fed from the forests and Wildreness area upstream.
