MERWICK COTTAGE Due to allergies, this is a non pet friendly home with no exceptions. Merwick Cottage is perched atop a rise overlooking the Sheepscot Bay. Enjoy panoramic views and ocean breezes from the deck and its generously windowed interior. Look for the Osprey nest on the channel marker in front of Merwick Cottage, close enough to watch the nestlings grow up over the summer. Much like Merwick's owners, the Osprey's keep coming back - just like we hope your will! You will love how the rich history of the Five Islands section of Georgetown blends with the contemporary style of Merwick Cottage. When we asked the owners if there was any information they would like to share with future guests, we received these wonderful responses. "My favorite place to walk is Ledgemere Road, just above the Five Islands wharf. It is a dirt road running along the Sheepscot Bay for almost a mile, part of which is owned by the Nature Conservancy which provides a couple of parking spots. There is a small beach and you can walk out on the granite ledges where the surf crashes. The woods around are pine, and in the summer Ledgemere Road smells of balsam." "Sometimes, as we got older, the water from the ponds permitted a longer frolic than the ocean. Charles' Pond, which is within walking distance, is cool and deep. Sewell Pond, off of Old Stage Road, and a short hike from the road through a nature preserve is a favorite, rope-swinging place to play." "My favorite time of day is dawn, when the sun breaks over the horizon - lavenders, blues, gold's, and scarlet's silhouette the trees, boats and rocks. The song birds' songs echo across the water from the islands. The full moon on the water is hypnotizing and relaxing. Sometimes you can get both - a rising sun and a setting moon." "My very favorite thing about Maine and especially Five Islands is the smell of the fresh ocean air mingled with pine and roses. I suppose I could be a millionaire if I were able to bottle that and sell it. There is nothing like it in all the world." SO MUCH TO SEE, SO MUCH TO DO! From Merwick Cottage you have stunning views of the fishing village of Five Islands, the Sheepscot Bay and out to the open ocean. Head on down to your private dock and float with over 200 feet of rocky shore-front to enjoy watching the comings and goings of lobster boats and elegant yachts. Bring your own boats or rent locally for a spectacular day of exploration along this beautiful stretch of rocky coast line. Fish, swim, float or simply relax. Watch the moon rise over the bay from the cozy living room, glimmering on the surf crashing off Crow Island. There are miles of hiking and biking trails in Georgetown and more on preserved lands throughout the Mid-coast area. Experience convenient access to Mid-coast attractions and dining only 20 minutes away, while enjoying hiking, kayaking, bird watching, blueberry picking and swimming (for the brave) right out your front door. Visit neighboring Tarbox Farm to pick up your CSA (included) on Fridays at the 1770’s barn. Buy your lobsters straight off the boat a few miles up the island. Tarbox Cottage is a nostalgic, family-friendly escape to a simpler, bygone era. SO MUCH TO SEE, SO MUCH TO DO! Located on Westport Island in Midcoast Maine this 1850’s Farmhouse sits amid two and a half acres of blueberry bushes and lawn. Follow the path down to the waterfront to swim or kayak from the original stone piers. The property includes 600 feet of shoreline along the Sasanoa River, a tidal, salt-water river full of aquatic sea-life. The Sasanoa River is great for fishing, bird watching, kayaking, canoeing, sailing and more. Located about 2/3 of the way down Westport Island, this cottage is two miles off the main road at the end of a country lane, where the only sounds are the cries of birds and the muffled engines of lobster boats making the rounds of their traps offshore. A family of seals sometimes hauls up on the rocks of Willis Point a few hundred feet away. For a feeling of complete calm and solitude, start your day sitting on the Adirondack chairs on the front terrace sipping your coffee while watching the ripples spread on the bay (as the fog burns off, you will often spot eagles and ospreys) – and end it sipping a glass of wine and watching the sunset turn the water pink and orange. If you want action, the attractions of Wiscasset (1/2 hour) Damariscotta (40 minutes away), or Bath (1/2 hour) are of world-class interest. There is always the lively waterfront at Boothbay Harbor or the L.L. Bean outlet in Freeport less than an hour away. For every taste or age group there’s more than plenty to do, from the fish ladder to the Indian shell midden, to the antiques shops, house museums, or the Maine Maritime Museum; excursions of all kinds are available nearby, off- and on-shore ones, from cruises to group paddles. During the season, feel free to explore the blueberry bushes and brambles, eating as you go or bring back enough for blueberry pie! The “spreading chestnut” tree in the side yard invites you to sit under its shade and enjoy a visit with family and friends or just read a book. Maybe sit on the stoop and shell some peas or shuck some corn that you got from the neighboring Tarbox Farm. This is a wonderful house and perfect location to “unplug” from the everyday world. You are within walking distance of award-winning Five Islands Lobster Co. and, coincidentally, Merwick's kitchen has the needed pots and crackers to serve up a bountiful lobster dinner! There are miles of hiking and biking trails in Georgetown and more on preserved lands throughout the Mid-coast area. WHY BOOK WITH COTTAGE CONNECTION? Vacation Rentals. Privately Owned. Professionally Managed. Trusted since 1993. Cottage Connection was one of the first vacation rental companies in the Mid-coast region of Maine. Jeff and Audrey Miller, who own three vacation rental homes themselves had an aha moment when they realized they could not find anyone who ‘got it’ to manage their rentals for them. Since 1993 they have been trusted by homeowners and vacationers to “connect” each family with the perfect cottage for their vacation. As Audrey puts it; “The home they stay in becomes a personality, a part of their lore, when a family connects with the right cottage. Whether they want a rustic cabin in the woods or a high-end ocean bungalow, the right setting sets the tone for the entire vacation.” Learn more about how Cottage Connection can help make your vacation perfect! HARPSWELL, MAINE The Native Americans who originally inhabited Harpswell were part of the Abenaki. The Abenaki name for Harpswell Neck, then called West Harpswell, was Merriconeag or "quick carrying place", a reference to the narrow peninsula's easy portage. The Abenaki name for Great Island was Erascohegan or Sebascodiggin, which became by the late 1800s Sebascodegan Island. About 1659 Major Nicholas Shapleigh of Kittery, Maine, bought Merriconeag and Sebascodegan Island from the Abenaki, but because of Indian attacks, attempts to settle the area were abandoned until after Dummer's War. The Treaty of 1725 brought a truce, and by 1731 many settlers had returned.[6] Formerly a part of North Yarmouth, in 1758 the town was incorporated by the Massachusetts General Court and named for Harpswell in Lincolnshire, England, Industries included farming and some shipbuilding, but fishing brought considerable profit. Because of its scenic beauty, Harpswell is today a favorite with artists and tourists. The Bailey Island Bridge is an Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Additional amenities include: mooring, for a fee, open decks, swim ladder on float, linens provided for your stay, outdoor living area, heat, dock and float with 15' draw.
