INFORMATION ABOUT NORTH SUMATRA Geography North Sumatra is a region of indonesia's biggest island called Sumatra. It borders Aceh in the northwest and Riau province in the southeast. It has an area of 72.981 km2. The capital of the province is Medan (International Airport Kuala Namu), that is located in the east of North Sumatra. Volcanic formations characterize the surface. The most famous is the Lake Toba, 5 hours away from the International Airport, which was created by a enormous volcanic eruption about 74.000 years ago. Along the western and eastern coasts extend coastal plains, which are partly marshy and partly fantastic beaches. History The region was long in the shadow of the powerful sultanate of Aceh. This has Islamized the area in the 15th century. Only with the occupation of the Netherlands was the plantation economy developed and expanded what led to the end of the 19th century an economic boom. During the Second World War the island was in Japanese hands and became independent only in 1945. The Nationalpark North Sumatra is famous for the Gunung Leuser Nationalpark (TNGL). Berastagi town is 70 kilometers south of Medan and about 1,300 meters above sea level. The village rose to significance when Dutch settlers in Sumatra opened a boarding school there in the 1920s. The main economic activities in Berastagi, centers on the colorful fruit and vegetable market and on tourism. Berastagi is famous for its passion fruit. Lake Toba Lake Toba is an immense volcanic lake covering an area of 1,707 km² (1,000 km² bigger than Singapore) with an island in its centre. Formed by a gigantic volcanic eruption some 70,000 years ago, it is probably the largest resurgent caldera on Earth. Some studies say it might have been associated with causing previous ice age/climate change and the largest human population bottleneck ever. Genetic estimates suggests that there were only a few thousand individuals that survived its catastrophic eruption. The island in the middle – Pulau Samosir – was joined to the caldera wall by a narrow isthmus, which was cut through to enable boats to pass; a road bridge crosses the cutting. Samosir island is the cultural centre of the Batak tribe who are now mostly Christians. Lake Toba was perhaps once more popular than it is nowadays, It is a great laid back place to chill out for a few days after jungle trekking Nature protection, respect to the animals and humans and love for the country and people - that distinguishes us! Getting AroundTRAVEL TIPS Irwan will either pick you up at Bukit Lawang bus station (let us know you departure time with the public bus in medan/binjai), or help arrange a shared-taxi from their office in Bukit Lawang, or our private car with english speaking driver. Be careful with public bus from medan bus station, as some of our guests have experienced being scammed by some road mafia there to pay them an expensive bus fare. Notice that the bus is also often with loud music and runs so fast. Shared-taxi price information: > Shared-taxi Medan Airport - Bukit Lawang (4- 6 hours), vice versa, idr 190k/person. > Shared-taxi hotel in Medan - Bukit Lawang (3-4 hour trip), vice versa, idr 120k/person. > Shared-taxi Bukit Lawang - Berastagi (6 - 7 hours), vice versa, idr 170k/person, available at 9 am. > Shared-taxi Bukit Lawang - Lake Toba (8 - 10 hours), vice versa, idr 230k/person, available at 9 am. > Our private car with english speaking & responsible driver: - Medan airport/hotel - Bukit Lawang, vice versa idr 650k. - Bukit Lawang - Berastagi, vice versa idr 750k. > Bukit Lawang - Lake Toba, vice versa idr 1.2 M (possibility to stop by at sipiso-piso waterfall and Batak-Karo old king's palace (8 families live in the house!) > Please note that with shared- taxi, you share it with other passengers, there'll be several stops for pick/drop other passengers, break, or gasoline. And we can only help book the taxi for you. You can give the payment to Irwan to be passed to the office, or you can also pay & complaint - if there's any - directly to the taxi office in Bukit Lawang. Other Things to NoteWe can arrange a jungle trekking from 1 up to 30 days adventure for orangutans in their natural habitat, in both multi sport adventure and soft adventure. Price information from the Indonesian Guide Association, Bukit Lawang: > 1 day jungle trekking, €35/person, min. 3 persons. > 2 day jungle trekking, €60/person, min. 3 persons. > 3 day jungle trekking, €85/person, min. 3 persons. > 4 day jungle trekking, €125/person, min. 3 persons. > 5 day jungle trekking, €145/person, min. 3 persons. > Extra €10/person - if you combine with the traditional tube rafting on your way back from the jungle to Bukit Lawang village. The price includes all permit and entrance fee to the park, camera tax, fully licensed guide fee, meals, tent & refreshment. We also arrange other Sumatra Overland Tour: > 1 day tour visiting Sumatran elephants and help out with elephant wash: 1 person: €50 - motorbike ride (2 hours off-road), €75 - jeep ride. 2 persons: €65/person - jeep ride 3 persons: €55/person - jeep ride Extra €50/person for elephant ride. Somehow we do not recommend an elephant ride, as the skeleton of the elephant is not very suited to carrying anything more than its own weight. If it is necessary to ride an elephant, from a health perspective, it is better to sit on the back of the neck. > Volcano Trek for sunrise, Berastagi (1N/2D, 2 persons): €95/person with shared-taxi. €120/person with private car. > Sidikalang, sumatran coffee tour (3N/4D, 2 persons): €150/person with shared-taxi. €200/person with private car. > Lake Toba (3N/4D, 2 persons): €150/person with shared-taxi. €180/person with private car. > Sabang, Pulau Weh, Aceh > Bukittinggi (west sumatra) > Kubu tribal tour, Jambi province.
