The SpaceNeed to get away from the hustle-bustle of city life and reconnect with Nature and all things simple? Or have you ever wanted to live like cowboys and cowgirls did in the days of the Old West? Located just 2.5 hours north of Los Angeles in the southern Sierra Nevada, adjacent to Sequoia National Forest is a tiny 12 square mile valley surrounded by mountains: Walker Basin. Here life is the same as it was over 100 years ago. Roads are unpaved, cows range freely, the air is pure, and the night sky is full of stars. It is also the perfect haven for the writer who needs time and space. Just on the edge of the grid is my lovely log cabin. There is electricity and a landline for the telephone so put away you cell phone because they don’t work here. There’s a propane tank that provides gas for the stove, and water courtesy of a well and pump system. There is a television but it’s only there to play movies on the DVD player. There is Internet via satellite so you can selectively connect to the world via email, and stream your favorite radio station. Download speed is too slow and eats too much data to stream movies however. There's everything you need for cooking. The cabin is in the country so it's rustic, simple, charming but not fancy. The decomposed granite road brings a little bit of dust so I regularly hose down the porch. The air is thin and it takes a couple days to get adjusted. It's also very dry with humidity levels at 15% in the summer. I don't have pets but I've had one instance of a guest having allergies. The cabin was built by hand and sits on a 2.5 acre lot. The area is very quiet and you’ll rarely hear or see a car go by. Instead, you can enjoy the sound of the hummingbirds, woodpeckers, quails, Golden hawks and other creatures. The cabin is 750 square feet. It has an open layout with a living room/dining area and kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom. There is a pull-out couch so two extra guests can stay for free. In the summer a swamp cooler provides all the cooling you need. In winter the wood stove heats up the place nicely and each bedroom has a small radiator. There’s an ample supply of logs. Things to do around… The Kern River is half an hour away. It is well known for kayaking and fishing. You can swim there or go to Lake Isabella. Many bicyclists ride the loop from Caliente, up this way, then Twin Oaks and back. The Cal-Bodfish road is well known by car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Less than an hour away is Johnsondale Bridge and great fishing for wild trout. Another 15 minutes and you’re in the Trail of the 100 Giants, the giant sequoias. Kernville, just past Lake Isabella is fun too. There are several restaurants and a brewing company. Shopping for essentials is done 15 minutes away at the Trading Post, on the road to Lake Isabella. You’ll find dry goods, pet food, beer and wine, milk and other basic foods. For serious grocery shopping, Lake Isabella is half an hour away. Bakersfield is 45 minutes to an hour away. The log cabin is available year round but winter can be tough. It’s at 3500 feet. Bookings are for one week minimum and two people at least. There’s a pullout couch so up to 6 people can stay there. Guest AccessCoziness, a wood stove, warm showers, wifi, peace, quietness, no TV, a gazillion stars at night, the Sierras all around. Interaction with GuestsAs much as they need it. The NeighborhoodEach lot is 2.5 acres so this is perfect if you want to get away from it all and find peace. Getting AroundDirt roads, free range cattle. The Old West. Other Things to NotePlease note that I keep my freezer full in case I get snowed in during the Winter months so please don't bring any frozen items. Also, the armoire in the bedroom with bunk beds is free for guests. The other is not. Finally, do not rely on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps because they are not accurate. I strongly recommend using a GPS.

About the bedrooms: There are two bedrooms on the main level. There’s the Master Bedroom with California King bed, a grand bath with shower and a walk in Jacuzzi Tub (handicapped accessible), as well as a small single bedroom, which doubles as a library with a cast iron gas stove for cozy reading on a chilly day. The upper level has two bedrooms, one with a Queen bed and one that can be made up as two twins or as a King bed. There is a full sized convertible sofa in the office/home theater. The house has 4 LED LCD televisions. There are large screen 1080p TVs in the Kitchen / Family Room, the Office/Home Theater and the Master Bedroom. The Queen Bedroom has a mid-size LCD TV. The house is handicapped accessible, with wheelchair access from the main level and the garage. An elevator serves all three levels. The master bath has a large shower with a bench seat and a “walk in” Jacuzzi 'Safety Tub' with jets and air bubbles, as well as grab bars in the toilet area. Our neighborhood - Bear Valley Springs, California: Bear Valley Springs is a private gate-guarded community, located in the Tehachapi Mountains in California. The community spans 25,000 acres and 3,500 home sites, with 2,500 homes now built. With an estimated population of 7,500 people and 800 horses. There’s lots of space and 50 miles of open trails for horseback riding or hiking as well as lakes for fishing. Bear Valley Springs' Elevation ranges from 4,118 feet to 6,934 feet (Bear Mountain). We're in the mountains, but near enough to the cute little town of Tehachapi, which actually has a 'main street' with shops, restaurants and museums. So if you need a good restaurant or a little town time, it's nearby. Our house is at 6,200 feet, with views into the three valleys: Cummings Valley, Bear Valley and the San Joaquin Valley. View the spectacular sunrises and sunsets from the house, through walls of windows and the 8 foot high picture window doors . . . or from the two attached decks. We have four distinct seasons at the house, including significant winter snowfall. The house is heated by three large propane furnaces, supplemented by 2 Pellet Stoves, a gas stove and a gas fireplace. With double glazed windows and multiple heat sources, the house is snug and comfy in any weather. On top of the mountain as we are, we escape the summer heat of the valleys. Some days in the summer the temperature in Tehachapi can reach or exceed 100 degrees, but at our house the temperature rarely exceeds 80 degrees and we often have a cool breeze. We’re on 4 acres, but look down on 40 acres of undeveloped forest that is spectacular in any season. There’s a meditation area below the house and behind a big rock, where you can sit on a bench with only the sounds of nature to aid the slowing of your heartbeat. Rental of our property for 7 days or more comes with access to the Oak Tree Country Club, Golf Course, Tennis, Equestrian Center, Horse Trails, Rifle Range, Swimming and Indoor Recreation (Basketball, pool tables, pingpong, foosball, etc.) The lakes and wilderness areas are always available.
