The SpaceSituated in the Calitzdorp valley, 1.5 km outside of the town, you will come across the two cottages which are built with eco friendly methods as all of the materials were readily available and of the earth. Straw bales, river stones, clay sand and river reeds were used to construct the cottages that not only respond to the vast temperatures of the Klein Karoo but are also beautifully designed to look like they have simply grown from the earth. Positioned on the edges of the farms vineyard the breath taking views of the surrounding Swartberg are cleverly framed, not only through the perfectly positioned 3m high timber shuttered doors but also through the vineyard itself which is your private quiet and peaceful piece of the land during your stay. There are two cottages to choose from.... The first cottage sleeps 2 guests whilst the second sleeps 3 guests.     The history of the cottage on Middelplaas (Middle Farm) is unknown. It is the only house on Middelplaas and was probably many decades ago used as a residence for the people looking after the farm for the owners who lived elsewhere in the valley. Over the years it became very run down before it was renovated by the present owners into a cottage with the most beautiful view over the olive orchard, veld and mountains. It is a cosy 2 bed roomed self catering cottage, only 3 minutes walk from the private picnic site next to the river. In the main bedroom there is a double bed, the second bedroom has 2 single beds. All linen included. The lounge has an open fireplace for heating in winter, or the occasional braai. There is an air conditioner in the lounge. The sheltered stoep overlooking the veld and mountains is the ideal entertainment area with enough seating for guests. There is a circular braai on the grass adjacent to the stoep. Braai grids, fire tongs and swartpotjie available. The kitchen is equipped with all the required utensils, including cutlery, crockery, kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge/freezer and stove. The bathroom has a shower, basin, and toilet. A gas water cylinder provides hot water. On hot summer days you can go for a swim in the river at the nearby private picnic site.       Matjiesvlei Cottages has 3 self catering restored historical cottages, of which Die Bokwagtershuis is one. It is situated in Matjiesvlei at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains, 16 km from Calitzdorp on route 62. The hustle and bustle of city life melts away - the perfect place to relax and unwind. The town of Calitzdorp is known for its excellent wines and is known as the port capital of South Africa. There are a number of restaurants in town and basic provisions can be bought in Calitzdorp. A number of artists have settles in Calitzdorp and visitors can visit the art studios in and around Calitzdorp. Outdoor activities in Matjiesvlei: Birding: Bring your own binoculars, and have a look at all the wonderful birds nestling in Matjiesvlei. Plants: enjoy photographing beautiful plants while walking, especially aloes, Spekbos and plakkies. Hiking: your choice is between the gravel road in the valley (7 km), the hiking road next to the river (30 min or Steering’s Kloof (1,5h). Cycling: In the valley you can cycle on the valley road and to the R62 and back. This will provide a good hour’s cycling. For the more adventurous, you could continue on the R62 to Calitzdorp. Another option is taking your bicycle to town by car, park your car in town, and go on the Kruisrivier /Groenfontein road. This circle of about 55 km, passing the Rooikoppe, and then a couple of kilometres on the R62 back to Calitzdorp. Parking at Amalienstein, +\- 20 minutes the direction to Ladismith, you could cycle in the Seweweekspoort with all the wonderful rocks round every corner. Fishing: In the Gamka River you will find Karp and Yellow fish and a small amount of Black Bass. As Yellow fish is an endangered species, it should be released to the river unharmed after being caught. Canoeing and Swimming: There is a good stretch of about 1 km you can canoe. The guests of Matjiesvlei Cottages have the use of a private grass covered picnic spot next to the river where they can swim and play. There is a built braai if they would like to have their lunch there. Die Bokwagtershuis, “Goat keeper’s house”, was originally built during the 19th century as accommodation for Matjiesvlei’s goat keeper. His task was to tend to all the goats of the different farmers in the valley. The house has been authentically restored to maintain its atmosphere, with addition of modern amenities. (Sleeps 4) •All linen included. • Air conditioner. •Braai grids, fire tongs and swartpotjies are available. •The kitchens are equipped with all the required utensils.         Die Stalle (The Stables) was originally built as the residences for two of the owners of undivided shares in the agricultural land bordering the Kleinrivier (Little River). Later owners turned the houses into stables. It has now been restored into a comfortable 3 bedroomed cottage with a beautiful view of the valley and mountains. It is next to the farm dam. In the main bedroom there is a double bed, the second and third bedrooms have 2 single beds each. All linen included. Two of the bedrooms have Queen Anne stoves for heating in winter. There is an air conditioner in the middle bedroom. The spacious stoep overlooking the veld and mountains is the ideal entertainment area with a built-in braai and more than enough seating for guests.           Die Skuur (The Shed) is the working shed which forms the heart of farming activities on Middelplaas. From Die Skuur there are beautiful views over the olive orchard down to the Gamka River and of the surrounding mountains. Die Skuur offers basic self catering accommodation in 2 bedrooms. The Alwyn room has 2 single beds and a bunk bed. The Spekbos room has a double bed and a bunk bed. Linen is provided Each bedroom has an en suite bathroom with toilet, basin and shower. Kudu, Oryx, Nyala, Wildebeest, Hartebeest, Blesbok, Springbok, Impala, Lechwe and Giraffe are easily viewed, among others. The endangered Cape Mountain Zebra is well established. Free of large predators, there is a unique opportunity for the more energetic to explore the area on foot and the area is ideal for mountain biking. The vegetation varies from Mountain Fynbos to Succulent Karoo and Renosterveld. Protea species can be found in the higher-lying areas, while aloes dominate the landscape on the lower slopes. Most plants flower in the spring, while the protea species tend to flower in autumn, and the bright aloe flowers light up the landscape in winter. The rich floral diversity attracts a wide variety of birdlife, from sunbirds to raptors to Blue Cranes.             The SpaceThe history of the cottage on Middelplaas (Middle Farm) is unknown. It is the only house on Middelplaas and was probably many decades ago used as a residence for the people looking after the farm for the owners who lived elsewhere in the valley. Over the years it became very run down before it was renovated by the present owners into a cottage with the most beautiful view over the olive orchard, veld and mountains. It is a cosy 2 bed roomed self catering cottage, only 3 minutes walk from the private picnic site next to the river. With free Wifi Access and security screens in front of all doors and windows. In the main bedroom there is a double bed, the second bedroom has 2 single beds. All linen included. The lounge has an open fireplace for heating in winter, or the occasional braai. There is an air conditioner in the lounge. The sheltered stoep overlooking the veld and mountains is the ideal entertainment area with enough seating for guests. There is a circular braai on the grass adjacent to the stoep. Braai grids, fire tongs and swartpotjie available. His task was to tend to all the goats of the different farmers in the valley. The house has been authentically restored to maintain its atmosphere, with addition of modern amenities.
