The SpaceEdge of the World B&B -- Kona, Hawaii Aloha ! Thanks for thinking about staying with us. My name is Kurt. Our wish is that you will feel like you are staying with friends here in Hawaii rather than being cubed up in a hotel somewhere. We take the time with all of our guests to find out their interests and help them to build as tight or loose an itinerary as they wish -- emphasizing ocean, geological, archeological, nature, scientific, cultural, and/or social activities. As you will find, there is much to do on the Big Island, or, what we call, the "real Hawaii.". A large portion of our guests are return "customers" who come back to the Edge year after year. Many people use the Edge of the World as a base from which to explore the rest of the Big Island. Others use it as a place to watch papaya grow, and that's fine too. For Kana, my Japanese wife, and me, it is a genuine pleasure to meet folks from around the U.S. and from around the world. The Crow's Nest (called Best Ocean View in Hawaii Room) is on the second floor of the house and has a spectacular view of Kealakekua Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It has a private lanai, individual satellite TV, DVD, phone, private bath, refrigerator, wall to wall carpet, and king size bed. It is our most popular room and a favorite of honeymooners, artists and poets. It is $139 plus tax per night. This room may have the best view in Hawaii! When there are more than two guests per room, there is an additional charge of $15 per person per night. In those cases we put out Japanese style futons. The maximum capacity for each room is four. Also, I do not charge extra for one night stays. Prices include a hearty, tropical breakfast. We are also a member of the Hawaii Island Bed and Breakfast Association, and the Edge of the World has recently won the "Traveler's Choice Award" (B&B Registry), so guests can be assured of the highest standards. You'll also find A Beautiful Edge of the World recommended in the the Hawaii edition of the Lonely Planet. We are located on a five acre working farm, surrounded by macadamia nut, coffee, papaya, avocado, and mango trees. If you're a coffee drinker, you'll be served my own 100% pure, organic Kona coffee every morning.(Don't mean to brag about our coffee, but many folks have told us it's the best they've ever tasted. We wholesale to our guests, any quantity.) If you would like to try my own noni tea, just let me know. We also grow organic bananas, pineapple, guava, papaya, sour sop, Surinam cherries, atamoya, cheromoya, oranges, limes, sapodilla, and passion fruit, some of which you will be served with breakfast, depending on the fruits in season. There are also abundant beautiful flowers scattered here and there. Guests who stay for three days or more may use the microwave and refrigerator. We also offer free laundry service for guests who stay three days or more. We have complimentary hair dryers, beach towels and mats, limited snorkel equipment, and ice chests for our guests. Guests are welcome to use my computer for a quick check of their e-mail. We now have free WIFI throughout the house. Please let me know if you'd like me to reserve a room. Warm aloha, Kurt and Kana Guest AccessComplimentary beach and snorkel equipment, beach towels, hair dryers, refrigerator, microwave. Guests are welcome to congregate any place in the house, including a magnificent balcony that looks out over the ocean. . It's a great place to watch the sun go down. There's also a table in the garden area in front of the house for guests. Interaction with GuestsOn check in we give the guests a brief tour of what's available for them. The host almost always joins the guests after breakfast and over a cup of coffee he will make suggestions about things to see and do that may not be in "normal" guide books. Our aim is that you will have a truly exceptional experience on the Big Island and we do our part to help make that happen. Guests that wish may join the host, schedule permitting, for a tour of coffee, macadamia and various tropical plants. Learn about the uses of some of these plants by the ancient Hawaiians on your tour led by Dr. Weigelt. The NeighborhoodThere is a tremendous ocean view at this bed and breakfast. It's a rural setting -- Old Hawaii at its finest. No close houses, no highway noise, a wonderful variety of tropical trees and plants and birds. Peaceful to say the least. Yet, it's only five minutes drive to some fine and reasonable restaurants and a supermarket and a ten minute drive to some of Hawaii's finest snorkeling and hiking. Many guests like to get take away food from one of the nearby restaurants, swing by the supermarket and pick up some beer or wine or fruit drinks, bring it home and watch the sunset from the lanai. Getting AroundPublic transportation on the outer Hawaiian Islands is poor. Although there's the occasional bus, I'd very strongly suggest renting a car. Besides helping you get here, it will allow you to explore the intriguing nooks and crannies of the Big Island. You won't regret that investment. If you're from one of the countries that drive on the left side of the road, people drive quite courteously here -- you'll adjust quickly and painlessly. Other Things to NoteHawaii State taxes applied to your accommodation are 13.42%. While we wish we didn't have to charge this extra fee--we are required by the state to collect it for them. This is the only additional fee paid to the hosts after check in. There are no "single-night stay fees", no parking fees, no other fees of any kind. Regarding one night reservations, it depends on existing reservations for that particular room. One night reservations, with no additional fees, are often possible, but not always. Please ask.

The SpaceWelcome to South Kona, Big Island of Hawaii! I offer a private, ocean-view studio apartment on the garden level of a single-family home in a beachy, rural subdivision comprised of interesting custom homes. This self-catering studio is separate and lockable from the main house and has a private entrance via side staircase. Sleeps two guests max. I can take parties of--(a) one adult; (b) two adults; or (c) one adult and one older child. Two minutes drive to our own secluded, uncrowded, black-pebble beach with easy access to outstanding snorkeling, kayaking and swimming. Unlike beaches in town, it's very uncrowded here most days and you will probably have the whole beach to yourself. :) This property is located between mile marker 97 and 96 in South Kona. Spacious, cozy, clean, comfortable studio outfitted with all you need for cooking--including utensils, dishes, pots, pans, coffee grinder, even blender and a pancake griddle! NEW: Ultra-luxurious, certified organic King mattress by Nest Bedding with brand new platform. Also, pleasant cement patio outside: a picnic table, gas BBQ for grilling up that great island fish or island-grown beef. Save money on restaurants—eating out is pricey! Cook here at home. New patio chairs and table also outside. Please note: This is a setting quite off the beaten track, so if you are looking to walk to nightlife, convenience stores or Starbux, this location is NOT the place. If you want to see canopies of stars, hear birds and whales and the crashing surf, and be near premier, uncrowded snorkeling, well, that's more like us. Most guests love our rural location for just these reasons. At night, it's a safe, peaceful, dark, breezy and simply gorgeous out here. This is not a five-star resort room, nor should you expect it to be. It's a cozy, cottage-like, fully outfitted apartment in a mature, family neighborhood. A little bit funky, a little bit sweet, a lot homey, a lot comfy. I have no minimum required stay (except at Christmas and NY holiday weeks, which must be booked in a minimum 7-day block at Christmas and a 7-day block Christmas/New Years. Also, short-stay requests for too far in advance cannot be accepted. Otherwise, come for one night or come for 21! Our quiet subdivision is stair-stepped onto the dramatic, steep slopes of Mauna Loa, (the world's largest active volcano) creating commanding, 180-degree panoramic ocean views. This affords us vistas all the way to Kailua town 25 miles to the north. Clear horizon lines run 35 miles straight out to sea. Sunsets are extraordinary experiences on this part of the island, especially at our location and elevation. You feel like you are on top of the world --yet still close to the beach. Our leeward (Kona means "lee" or calm) side of the island is characterized by mostly dry, sunny weather year round, with a light increase in rain in the summer months. Average year-round temp is 80 degrees. Perfect. In winter, we can hear the raucous humpback whales from up here (November through April). Star-swept skies astonish. Cool elevation of about 750 feet means that ocean breezes keep us naturally comfortable all day, every day. We don't have the loud shrieking frogs that have invaded much of the rest of the island. Summer is calm and ideal for snorkeling, although it's a bit more rainy. The beach right below us is a pebble cove with protected bay. Snorkeling along the finger reefs here (in calm conditions) is excellent. Our beach is a TRUE best-kept secret. Shore divers love this area, also known for its abundant sealife, startling pinnacles and breathtaking coral gardens. (The Kona Aggressor dive charter parks just to the north of our bay.) Kayaking is premier and it's easy to launch (in calm conditions) from our paved beach parking lot. The beach is about two minutes away from me via a crazy steep road. You can walk it-- but driving is recommended. Hiking along the ancient King's Trail and to "Secret's" mini black sand beach is also accessible from the beach. Walk even farther north and reach the place we call the "Secret Grotto." Free use of my high-quality U.S. Divers snorkeling equipment (with signed waiver) beach umbrella, beach cooler & chairs, sunshades, reef shoes, surfwear, noodles, beach towels and beachmats. Free, reliable and fast Wi-Fi. Furniture includes brand new organic king size platform bed from Nest Bedding, end tables, dining table and chairs, sitting chairs and lamps, two dropleaf tables, two armoires for storage. Futon couch. New 19-inch flat screen/DVD player with a few good movies and a few B or C movies. :) We are on a self-sustaining rainwater catchment system here, so water conservation is requested and appreciated. Enjoy often spectacular sunsets in the evenings, amidst the sounds of hundreds of roosting mynah birds, (depending on the time of year.) It's tranquil and dark out here... a great location to experience the real vibe of Authentic Kona, Hawaii. Your hosts in the main house are friendly, longtime Hawaii Island residents with a Maltese dog and grumpy-faced cat. We are approx. 23 miles south of Kailua-Kona, about an hour south of the airport. With the new bypass open, we are under 30 minutes to Keauhou Bay. LOCAL DRIVING DISTANCES (North): We are 15 minutes south of Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park (the best preserved cultural refuge and ancient temple complex in the state) and "Two-Step," featuring outstanding snorkeling, said to be among the top three in the state. Twenty minutes from world- famous Kealakekua Bay--a pristine bay and protected marine reserve/underwater park great for swimming, dolphin sightings and whale-watching. Five minutes to the famed coffee belt of the Honaunau Valley. In short, South Kona is home to a great variety of different beaches and attractions all within minutes. We are about one hour and 15 minutes to the amazing Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with (currently) two live eruption sites. Punalu'u Black Sand beach, with an abundance of sunbathing turtles, is about 45 minutes south as are turnoffs for the Green Sands Beach and South Point. (a 12-mile access road takes you to within hiking distance of these spots.) It's about 12 miles north to the town of Captain Cook, with services such as gasoline, restaurants, grocery and banking. It's 45 minutes to Kailua or Keauhou if you DO want some nightlife, dining, bigbox retailers, sportfishing, golf, luaus or tennis. (NOTE: Food and other provisions are the responsibility of the guest and are not provided.) Hiring a car for mobility's and convenience sake is mandatory. My place is great for a single or couple who want a nicely located spot near the beach that's still in the West side tropical zone... but seek a setting well away from the retail, heat, tourists and bustle of Kailua town. Winter rates (November through April) are higher. Ironman week is higher. Christmas week (Dec. 29-26) must be booked as a minimum block. (Can be more nights; cannot be less.) Same with New Year's week. (Dec. 26 - January 2) There is a non-refundable, $85 cleaning fee and $180 refundable security deposit required. NOTE ABOUT TAX: Due on arrival. I must collect Hawaii excise and accommodation tax IN CASH of 13.45% on MY payout amount. I'll let you know this amount when you book. The collection of tax is mandatory and non negotiable. I can often take you last minute, or for a short stay so please enquire. NOTE: For security reasons, the AirBnB map here does not show my exact location, (mm 97) so if you want to know approximately where it is, just ask. Over 25 only please. I do ask that you complete your AirBnB Profile, especially if you have no reviews or references. I'm only interested in hosting guests who are quiet, courteous and respectful. Please read the listing carefully to make sure it's a fit before booking. Sorry, no refunds on weather delays/flight cancellations or booking errors. Enjoy your stay in Kona without breaking the bank. Price includes a big breakfast, use of snorkel equipment, wifi throughout the house. Truly magnificent ocean views of Kealakekua Bay. The room has a double bed and a twin bed. There's a nice view out the large window of the garden and orchard, and a wonderful skylight tor enjoying the stars at night. We have a table set up on the lanai to take in magnificent ocean sunsets. A great location for exploring the Big Island. Nearby you will find some of Hawaii's best ocean activities, nature hikes, and archeological sites (The Place of Refuge National Park is a ten minute drive). This is rural Hawaii at its finest, yet there are several fine (and reasonable) restaurants and a supermarket five minutes drive away. Guest AccessComplimentary beach and snorkel equipment, beach towels, hair dryers, refrigerator, microwave. Please note that one night reservations for this room depend on existing scheduling. One night reservations, with no additional fees, are often possible, but not always. Please ask.

The SpaceIn addition to coffee orchards, this farm has vegetables in raised beds, medicinal plants, and an organic hydroponic growing system. The rooms were renovated in 2014, freshly painted, and decorated with a touch of Dali art. One of the two bathrooms is more rustic and is scheduled for remodeling early this year. It is fully functional. There is a spacious double living room, a large covered porch space with a hammock, three bedrooms, and an entry porch. The house is close to basic shopping and restaurants. Several beaches and ocean access points are within a 10-15 minute drive. These are excellent areas for snorkeling and diving. Guest AccessGuests have access to all rooms in the house, including the kitchen and two bathrooms. We live on a separate property. Interaction with GuestsI will try to greet you and introduce you to the house when you arrive. I will also be available for advice on how to enjoy the island. You will have some organic coffee that was grown on the farm, vegetables from our CSA and organic true cinnamon from my other farm. More will be available if wanted. Tuesdays are often workdays on the farm so there may be a few people caring for the plants on that day. You can help if interested or even take a farm tour of the main farm or produce business for a small fee. My produce company has access to the best food on the island including tropical fruits like mango and dragon fruit, along with mushrooms, lettuce, and other produce The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood is rural and quiet. Though close to the main road, the houses are tucked away on small one lane roads and are mostly on small farms. It is safe to walk around the neighborhood at night, although one should leave space for cars approaching on the narrow road. There is a close by farmer's market on Friday and Sunday. Getting AroundPublic transportation is poor on the island although there is a bus stop in front of the Manago Hotel, which is within 10-15min walking distance. This location is best for a person with a rental car as the bus comes only a couple times a day. Other Things to NoteThere is no dishwasher. The wifi is satellite based and is fast enough for most uses. It is on a semi capped plan that I can add to. Email and web surfing is easily supported. Running HD movies can use up a lot of GB. Antenna servicing is being done this week and is likely to improve the system. (Dec 1, 2016) I will update

The SpaceThis is it. Look no further if coming this summer. You've found the best place on the island for the money. So close to Kona but none of the crowds. Everything you need is nearby as well as the famous bay where the dolphins play. Guest AccessGuests will have access to the main level of the home. Access to bedrooms is based on double occupancy. One or 2 get the master. If 3 or 4 get two bedrooms and if 5 or 6 get all 3 bedrooms. The garage is our storage area and the lower level ohana has a long term renter in it. Interaction with GuestsIf I'm on the island, I look forward to meeting you. If not, check in with me when you arrive so I know you've arrived safely. The NeighborhoodMix of dollar homes and coffee farms. Great weather (usually 10 degrees cooler than Kona). Spectacular views. Neighbors are great. Quiet and respectful. Swim with the dolpins, snorkel, dive, hike, visit the waterfalls on the ease side, visit the volcano on the south side. Just hanging out is one of the best options! The SpaceWe have two bedrooms: the Whale Room and the Dolphin Room. The Whale room is the main bedroom and has cable TV, a queen bed and a twin bed. The Dolphin Room is smaller and has two twin beds which can be joined to form a king bed. Both rooms are bright, airy and have a ceiling fan. The Whale Room also has a nice view of the bay (you can see the Captain Cook monument from your bed!). There is a bathroom with hot shower next to the Whale Room, as well as an outside wash area with a shower and hose to rinse off. We also have snorkel equipment, body boards, beach mats and chairs and a game of bocce! The laundry area has a new washing machine and a dryer. We provide biodegradable soaps and detergents. There is a spacious lanai (patio) with tables and chairs, a sofa and a reading chair, where you can enjoy your meals or just hang out and do as the locals do, "talk story." Adjoining the lanai is a kitchen with all the appliances you need. There is free wifi and cable TV. Guest AccessDolphin Dreams is divided into two floors, the first where visitors stay and the second, where your hosts Cindy and John live with their doggies. Nestled behind a tiny state lot, Dolphin Dreams is only 30 steps from the ocean. Interaction with GuestsWe like to help our guests make the most of their stay. There is so much to do but often visitors feel at loss cause they don't know who to book with or what to do when. All those questions: What about the weather or surf report? Can you combine one activity with another, or where is the best pizza, Thai or seafood restaurant? This is where we like to step in. We are usually around the house, either working on our organic garden or paddling and swimming in the ocean. We will be very happy to guide you daily, with as little or as much advice as you like. We love the area around the bay and the Big Island and enjoy sharing that stoke with our guests so they, too, can sense how special of an area Kealakekua is. The NeighborhoodAs one of our neighbors said, living on the Big island is as close to creation as you can get. Which is true since on the other side of the island is Volcanoes National Park. But our passion for the Big Island is for the area in front of us, Kealakekua Bay. The clear blue green waters are a marine reserve; across the 1 mile bay you can see the Captain Cook monument. Not only was this the first place where western explorers landed on Hawaii, but it is also where the first written account of surfing was recorded, by one of Cook's men. So much to do and everything so near: swim, snorkel/dive, whale watching (December through April), and the Honaunau City of Refuge National Park and famous "Two-steps" snorkeling and diving spot (only 4 miles down the road). Farmer's markets, artist galleries and fine dining in nearby towns and Kailua Kona. The area is best known for its Kona coffee and the whole area is a haven for small family-run coffee and macadamia nut plantations. Further around the island there is the world famous Volcanoes National Park (80 miles) and to the north but only a 1-2 hour drive away, lush valleys with spectacular waterfalls, quaint artist villages and white sandy beaches. Dolphin Dreams Kealakekua is the perfect location on the island to center your activities.
