Description
The Space

Located on Cape Rosier on a tiny island just off shore, this cottage is a very special (some say magical) place. Accessed by a foot- bridge from the mainland, the cottage has amazing views of Eggemoggin Reach and Weir Cove and a private dock. At high tide, this cottage is it's own little island, accessed only by a sturdy 4' wide foot bridge. The cottage is comfortable and fully furnished with modern amenities but maintains much of it's original 1915 charm. Views of Penobscot Bay, Eggemoggin Reach and Weir Cove are visible through every window, and the water's edge is mere feet away - This Maine getaway is perfect for swimming, exploring tide pools, getting close to nature and enjoying a true "Down East" Maine experience. The front porch of the cottage is one of it's best features - You'll find it hard to leave once you relax in a porch chair for your morning coffee. The porch is also the perfect spot for enjoying evening cocktails and watching the moon rise over Red Point. A sunny small back porch is also a great spot for reading and watching the sunset. The cottage sleeps 8 comfortably with 4 bedrooms and 1 and 1/2 baths. Bedroom 1 is on the first floor. it has a double bed and a separate door leading to the first floor bathroom. The bathroom has a shower, sink and toilet and an apartment-sized washer/dryer. Also in the first floor is a large living room with a wall of windows that looks out on Weir Cove and a beautiful stone fireplace. Also on the first floor is the kitchen and a good sized dining room where 10 can fit around an old oak table comfortably. Bedrooms 2, 3 and 4 are on the second floor, along with a 1/2 bath. The largest bedroom has a queen size bed, next door is a double bed in a room with a skylight for star gazing. Across from those two bedrooms is a room with two twin beds. There is a large carpeted common area between the bedrooms that's great for playing monopoly or watching movies. The property includes use of a dock, 3 kayaks (one double and two singles) a row boat, a few bicycles (each in it's own special state of disrepair - but usable), fishing poles and a wide assortment of life jackets, including children's sizes. The kitchen has an apartment-sized dishwasher and gas stove, plus all the standard appliances like microwave, toaster, coffee maker, etc. There is an apartment-sized washer and dryer in the downstairs bathroom. Games, puzzles and an eclectic book selection are at the ready for a lazy rainy day. We'll be there to meet you when you arrive and show you around the property. During your stay, we will be a phone call away if you need us. One of the special things about the island is being able to call it your own for the time you are there. We'll make it a priority to respect your privacy, but may need access to the dock occasionally - we will do that quickly and quietly. Cape Rosier is remarkable for it's natural beauty. The Cape possesses much the same charm that attracted visitors to this remote area in the late 1800's from Boston by steamship. Highlights to visit while you're there include Holbrook Island Sanctuary, The Good Life Center, and Four Season Farm. If you're lucky, you can take in a pancake breakfast or bake sale at the Cape Rosier Grange, or buy lobsters right off the dock at Hiram Blake Camp. Nearby Brooksville, a 10 minute drive, has a small market (with some surprising gourmet and locally grown choices - and a great wine selection), a fine restaurant, and a great farmer's market every Tuesday morning in the summer. Blue Hill, 25 minutes away, offers a larger supermarket, and many shops and restaurants to choose from, it's a great day trip. Little Deer Isle and Stonington are also great day-trip destinations, and the truly adventurous can take a Ferry from Stonington to Isle Au Haut for a scenic bike-ride around the island. Castine, Camden, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are all easy and enjoyable day trips as well. There is room for parking up to 3 cars in a shared parking lot on the mainland. We'll provide a Garden Way cart for you to transport your belongings from the car-park to the island through a beautiful woods trail and across the bridge. Getting to Cape Rosier takes perseverance - it's WAY off the beaten path, but well worth the trip. It's about an hour from the Bangor Airport, and 3 hours from the Portland Jetport. We can provide detailed directions, but most GPS systems will deliver you to the parking lot very nicely.
