Villa Lourdes is an unusual property in the town of Chapala, on the main promenade ("malec贸n") overlooking Mexico's largest freshwater lake. It is one of only two residences right on the Chapala malec贸n, within easy walking distance from the main Chapala square and the shopping district. Chapala is at 5,000 feet above sea level, and the lake is surrounded by mountains. The weather is among the best in the world.
Being on the upstairs balcony is like watching "National Geographic Live." Fascinating and beautiful, full of unexpected and fun surprises. We've watched pelicans and great blue herons, Aztec dancers on the plaza next to the house, unbelievable sunsets most every day, traditional religious processions dating back to Chapala's origins in the 1500's, and many visiting families relaxing together as they stroll the malec贸n. There's often music in the background, yet everything pretty much closes down by 9pm.
The house itself has two stories, with three en-suite bedrooms, an updated kitchen, large living/dining room, and an adjoining garden and party area that's good for family gatherings and quiet times. Fresh groceries are available seven days a week at the covered market on Chapala's main square, an easy walk from Villa Lourdes.
The house is fully furnished. The part-time housekeeper and gardener take care of routine cleaning and sweeping. In addition, there are four bicycles available and a two-person kayak. Area amenities include a public tennis court, biking and hiking paths, numerous art shows and concerts in nearby Ajijic, good public bus and taxi transport, and a variety of restaurants.
The town of Ajijic, with its many galleries, boutiques, and an English-language center with library, is located about 7 miles to the west of Chapala. There are many interesting sights in the area for day trips, including the Huentitan/Oblatos Canyon, the city of Guadalajara, thermal pool complexes, and the round pyramids at Guachimontones. Overall, a rare opportunity - on the lake and right in town!
Discounts can be negotiated for longer-than-one-month rentals. Renters pay actual utilities costs (phone, gas, electricity). No rentals for less than one month.
Villa Lourdes is in the downtown, tourist area of Chapala, convenient to restaurants, sporting, and cultural activities. The house itself is a photo opp in that many people stop to take photos of their families in front of the house and lake. In fact, the house is featured in several postcards of the area. During weekdays, the malec贸n is very quiet, with the pace picking up a bit on weekends as visitors come for day trips to lake. A wonderful nearby activity is to take a local "lancha" (boat) ride along the lake shore or just to stroll along the beach and check out the water birds. Benches are available all along the malec贸n, with vendors selling snacks and souvenirs on the other side of the malec贸n from Villa Lourdes.
On-street parking is available, and the police officer on duty next door will keep an eye on it for you. Local buses stop right behind the house, and a taxi stand is just a few blocks away. Buses to Guadalajara and other nearby towns leave every hour from the bus station located in downtown Chapala.
