The NeighborhoodThe house is set on the top of a hill and though there are a handful of homes on the road the acres of between each make the area private and quiet. Getting AroundThough Greenfield (closest city) has a train and bus station, there is, alas, no public transportation of any kind that would get you from there to here.

The SpaceWe offer only one room (for however many can be accommodated) to maintain relative privacy and tranquility. The guest room is very spacious with a bureau and desk, and incredibly comfortable bed. It is located on the second floor to the rear of the house with double exposures (one view over the apple trees and neighboring church; the other over the lilacs, stone patio and pasture beyond). One of the two closets features a secret staircase to the den below! Although bath is shared with your hosts we have similar concerns when we stay elsewhere on AirBnb. We are very mindful and pretty meticulous, with fresh changeover before guests arrive and we keep quality bath linens. One day we expect to have a second full bath devoted to guests, but with a historic house, that takes a bit of planning to execute correctly. Guest AccessFront upstairs rooms are private to hosts, as is the barn and ell (save for normal entering/exiting). Full kitchen area and dining room privileges (responsibly, cleaning up after self). Coffee and juice will be available in the morning, and if we happen to be making muffins or something, we are happy to share. We also are happy to share our spices and incidentals to a reasonable degree. Otherwise generally guests do their own cooking and breakfast and provide their own provisions. General shared common areas: Downstairs den with piano is accessible, as are books, games and music. Half bath downstairs w/laundry. Full bath upstairs A books/movie room upstairs in the rear opposite the guest room with books on shelves a selection of DVDs to use (or use your Amazon Prime or Netflix account to stream on your computer). Stone patio with fireplace Front parlor downstairs for quiet hanging out or reading Formal garden with chairs for hanging out All of our garden space, including under apple trees and the willow next to formal garden. Interaction with GuestsAlthough we do like to be social with our guests to some degree (and when things really go well we have even made good friends), we respect our guests privacy. We are fine leaving you to your devices after giving the quick intro to the house, apart from answering questions that may arise. So it is really up to guests. If you feel like playing Scrabble, but you are traveling alone (or even if there are 2 of you), don't be shy. We just might be in the mood for a couple of games. If you want to join us in the evening outside, you are usually more than welcome. At the end of September 2016 we welcomed 9 baby chickens who will eventually free range around the yard spaces with ample room. We look forward to their eggs! The NeighborhoodOur house is set within a designated historic district of authentic 18th/early 19th century buildings and very little traffic. In summer/early fall there is a Saturday morning market on the village green a quick stroll away. Abundant walking and hiking options are nearby along peaceful country lanes with stunning expansive views. This location is convenient for touristic Shelburne Falls with its various restaurants, the Glacial Potholes and Bridge Of Flowers) (15 mins) and the Pioneer Valley. Winter offers skiing at Berkshire East (15 mins) or Mt. Snow in Vermont or snoeshoeing. Summer offers ziplining or river tubing on the Deerfield River along the Mohawk Trail. Ashfield is 20-25 scenic minutes away and has a great fall festival. Getting AroundA car is essential for getting around the larger area (and to get here), but you can also cycle around. There is no bus service by the house (closest is FRTA which runs between Charlemont/Shelburne Falls and Greenfield etc.) Other Things to NoteFor those unaccustomed to traveling to Western Mass - cell service is spotty or, in hilly areas such as this, non-existent. Guests should be prepared for no service except along the Mohawk trail at the bottom of the hill. That said, the house has WiFi and the house phone (with caller ID) is available for free regular nationwide calls. Please do not be disappointed that we are on DSL -- as outrageous as it may seem it is a relative luxury in Western Mass (indeed most of New England outside of cities) and we are one of the relative few with it. Many towns and places have no internet at all (to go with no cell service) or get by on slow satellite. Our DSL streams music or Netflix movies just fine (in SD). In all but one of the 30 or visits we have had guests have expressed no surprise or disappointment whatsoever. But if you are trying to do high level stuff you are better off not venturing to New England unless you are either prepared to kick back a little or stay somewhere urban like Springfield MA -- even then you may need to research and ask questions before booking.
