Upgrades to the house include 200 amp electrical service, upstairs bath, shower added to downstairs tub, recessed refrigerator, kitchen island with counter bar, laundry room, new flooring, lots of painting, Wi-Fi internet service, and a brand new screened gazebo down by the bay. In the interest of full disclosure, as with many older homes the staircase and hallways are often narrow and steep. Such is the case in this home as seen in the pictures. The stairs are easily navigated, but you need to watch your head when exiting or entering the staircase at the top as the roof line slants in at this point. The futon is located on the main floor in case an elderly or handicapped person has trouble with the stairs.
The bedrooms are neat and comfortable. Linens, blankets, and pillows are provided. There is a queen bed in the largest bedroom, a full sized bed in the mid sized bedroom, and a twin bed in the smaller bedroom. All bedrooms have windows with screens to catch the delightful breezes coming off the bay.
The upstairs bath has a shower stall, toilet and sink. compact, but very functional.
The main bath, located off the kitchen (old world charm) has a toilet, sink, and full sized tub for a long soak as well as a shower. Shower head can be mounted stationary or hand held. There is a towel storage bin for rolled towels as well as towel racks. Towels are provided.
The kitchen is a wonderful country kitchen sized room. There is a full sized recessed refrigerator, dishwasher, and gas stove. The countertops are newly installed butcher block complete with an island and counter bar where three people can comfortably sit and enjoy their cup of morning Joe. All utensils, cooking equipment, place settings, and table ware are provided. There is a microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, and blender for your use. Just bring your food, or choose to dine out at the many wonderful local eating establishments. Bayside grocery store in Milbridge has everything you need as well as an in store bakery, deli, and excellent meat department.
There is a den facing Ficketts point Rd guarded by "Chief Twoferone" a real cigar store Indian. The den has a writing desk, wireless Wi-Fi, and a quiet sitting area away from the kitchen.
There is a mud room/pantry located past the bathroom off the kitchen. There is a door leading out to a side yard that is fenced in with a three foot tall wire fence and gate. Adequate enough for most dogs, but owner makes no representation as to the escape qualities of the fence. Our two Chocolate Labs are perfectly content out there. If you do intend to take advantage of the dog policy please clean this yard area as not all guests have dogs and kids may be inclined to play there too.
The Laundry/ All purpose room is located off the pantry. There is storage as well as hanging space and a laundry table there. The futon is also located there for guests who may wish to use the room for sleeping. Probably don't want to be doing laundry at the same time! There is a view to the bay from the laundry room window too.
The Living room is also furnished with a "nook" style table and benches for family meals or card games, puzzles, crafts, or any other use. The TV is hooked directly up to the DVD player. There is and assortment of DVD's on the shelf. As always, parental discretion is advised in choosing a movie to watch. If you have a Roku, Apple or other viewing device you should be able to hook it up to the TV and download through the Wi-Fi? (not real tech savvy, just ask my wife) The fireplace is not useable at this time.
The front porch has both an open sitting area and a screened area. I have found the front porch to be a pleasant place to relax even though it doesn't face the water. Traffic on Ficketts point Rd is usually light. It is a safe place to walk or ride bikes. If you exit the driveway to the right it takes you to the end of the road in about a mile. There you will find breathtaking views of the ocean and some of the local islands.
The basement can be used to store kayaks, canoe, bikes, etc, but should not be considered a play area for kids. There is lawn maintenance equipment stored there and other tools as well as building supplies and the electrical panel box.
The Captain Kelley house is situated on four acres atop a knoll closer to the street than the bay. The bay can be accessed by taking the walking path out back about 600' to the newly built screened in gazebo overlooking the water. You can sit in the gazebo and look across to the town, or watch the many shore birds soar, dive and bob in the water, If the time is right you can pick wild blueberries on your way down the path. You may even see a whitetail deer cross the path or an eagle soar overhead. About 4:00 you will probably be watching the lobster boats returning from a day of hauling traps. The Narragaugus bay is tidal, and depending on the tide, you may be able to launch kayaks or canoe right from the shore out back. There is a free public boat launch just a half mile down the road to the left where you can launch any sized boat. Navigational charts are available in town at the marine supply store and probably other places. Fishing from the boat launch is allowed at certain days/times as posted by the sign.
There is a picnic table located in a shady spot out back with a view to the water. It's also a nice relaxing place to enjoy a BBQ, Lobster dinner, Take out, or a nice cigar. A charcoal grill is provided for barbequing. Please let coals cool in the built in bin before disposal.
If Maine is "The Way life Should Be", Then Milbridge is the town Maine should be. Milbridge is a real Downeast working town. Just watch the local lobstermen. Here you can buy fresh off-the-boat clams and seafood and prepare it at home. You can have your own Downeast lobster boat, cruising yacht, or picnic boat commissioned and custom built right here in Milbridge! You won't find any tourist trap, overpriced Foo-Foo boutiques or cafes here in Mibridge, but you will find a wonderful diner, restaurant/pub, ice cream, seafood take out, and Mexican take out right in town. There is shopping, hair salons, and massage therapists all right here. The traffic is light, the atmosphere is relaxing and Milbridge is just far enough away from the hubbub to be enjoyable and memorable. If you want to explore Downeast Maine Milbridge is the ideal location. Halfway between Ellsworth and Machias, Milbridge is a short hop to places like Acadia Schoodic Point, Corea, Bartlett Estate Winery, and Birch harbor. There are also many fine eating establishments within a short drive of Milbridge. About an hours drive will allow you to explore places like Bar Harbor, Acadia (Mt. Desert), Eastport, Bangor, and Campobello Island. Do as much as you want or nothing at all. That's what's great about the Captain Kelley House in Milbridge. There are brochures, maps, and flyers of interest located on the shelf in the living room as well as a guest book we hope you will sign! Thanks for your interest!
