Trip Advisor says: “Can't imagine a better accommodation for a visit to Cape Breton”, “A trip to repeat!”, “ Lovely, well equipped cottage in a stunning location”,, “Relaxing, coupled with exceptional scenery”. Cliff Waters Cottage in Pleasant Bay is very secluded, yet central to the best of Cape Breton - the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, whale watching, Pollett's Cove, and Gampo Abbey Buddhist Monastery. Just off the beaten track this secluded oceanfront retreat on 89 acres of private land has a panoramic view of the ocean, mountains, sunsets, national park, whales, diving gannets, fishermen, stars, and community of Pleasant Bay. There is a sandy beach at the bottom of the hill with both river and ocean swimming. Hiking, sightseeing, whale watching, restaurants, shops, and local craftspeople are all within minutes of Cliff Waters. The cottage is fully equipped, very clean, comfortable and relaxed with a large deck and large windows overlooking the ocean and sunsets. The cottage has an open concept and is best suited to a couple, but is also great for a small family. Pleasant Bay is a sleepy little fishing village nestled in the foothills of the Highlands National Park. Through winter there is a one-store-town of about 120 people. In summer, fishermen head out to sea and a handful of accommodation, shop, whale tour and restaurant owners open their doors for tourists travelling along the Cabot Trail. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the locals are easy to talk to. We rely on communities outside of the park - mainly Cheticamp - for services such as groceries, gas, alcohol and banking. About Us We are a small homesteading family, who has moved from the city onto land that has been in our family for five generations and almost 100 years. We live past Gampo Abbey, about 3 kms from the cottage. We are here to help you have a great time and keep you informed on what to do and see while you're staying at Cliff Waters. If you're here for a week, we'll have you down to the house for a meal made with fresh eggs from our chickens, and berries and vegetables from our organic garden, or lobster from the sea - what ever is fresh and in season. If you're here for just a few days, we'll have you for coffee and homemade snack. Whatever the length of your stay, we'd like to meet. We enjoy meeting new people very much - it is a true joy for us. We have been fortunate enough to meet some of the most wonderful people from all around the world at our kitchen table. Waterfront Description & Nearby Activities Just down the road is a Buddhist monastery. Around 25 people live, work and study at the Abbey year round. They meditate daily in a shrine overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and balance their study with a work period in the commune. It is not uncommon to travel the remote road and see nuns and monks walking, maroon robes dancing in the wind - quite a remarkable sight. There is a Stupa of Enlightenment on the Abbey grounds with slogans of wisdom engraved in stone. You can tour the Abbey daily in the afternoon throughout the summer for a small donation. At the end of the dirt road, a footpath continues along the coast for roughly 9.5 kms to an abandoned settlement named Pollett's Cove. In the early 1900's, large families lived here with fishing and farming as a way of life. There was a school, a lobster canning factory, fishing shacks and houses. Large boats delivered staples such as sugar, tea and molasses in exchange for goods that the community produced. Today local farmers set their horses to pasture there, creating a very green, peaceful and fertile river valley - well worth the hike! The Cape Breton Highlands National Park is accessible within minutes and the large Park offers a wealth of hiking trails, guided tours and sight seeing opportunities along the Cabot Trail. There is an information booth at both entry points into the Park in Cheticamp and Ingonish. We provide a Park pass free of charge for all guests staying at the cottage. Whale tours depart daily from the harbour. We highly recommend scheduling a tour as the vastness of the undeveloped landscape of our wilderness protected areas and our National Park can be seen in great detail by boat. Whales are extremely common in this area and sightings are guaranteed by most operators. You may travel by fishing boat or by zodiac. We recommend going by zodiac as you can cover so much water quickly, for those who enjoy a rush. We recommend the older style fishing boats for those who enjoy the nostalgia of a day gone by. Either way, pick a clear day, and ask the operator to take you up the coast to Pollett's Cove if he can. The Best of Local: Book your week long vacation at Cliff Waters Cottage and we'll provide you with a pass to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park for the length of your stay. We'll also have you down to our house for a brunch or dinner and feed you local folklore and tidbits of information that will make your stay at Cliff Waters more enjoyable. Your time at Cliff Waters will be an amazing vacation to remember. Cliff Waters Cottage is set on a mountainside, oceanfront property on the outskirts of the community of Pleasant Bay. The people of Pleasant Bay are friendly and kind, and typically work the sea, the land or in tourism, or are here as a member of Gampo Abbey Buddhist Monastery studying Buddhism, or are one of those who have fallen in love with Pleasant Bay during a visit to the area, and now own a home and vacation here in the summer.

We are also the owners of Cliff Waters Vacation Properties and consistently get great reviews for our hospitality, accommodations and standards of cleanliness. ABOUT PLEASANT BAY: Pleasant Bay is a sleepy little fishing village nestled in the foothills of the Highlands National Park. Just down the road from The Old Salt is a Buddhist monastery. Today local farmers set their cows to pasture here, creating a very green, peaceful and fertile river valley - well worth the hike! The Cape Breton Highlands National Park is accessible within minutes and the large Park offers a wealth of hiking trails, guided tours and sight seeing opportunities along the Cabot Trail. There is an information booth at both entry points into the Park in Cheticamp and Ingonish. We provide a Park pass free of charge for all guests. We recommend going by zodiac as you can cover so much water quickly. Pick a clear day, and ask the operator to take you up the coast to Pollett's Cove. Pleasant Bay is about 5.5 hours from Halifax and 2.5 hours from Sydney. It is situated in the heart of the National Park, making it an ideal place to base yourself if you wish the explore the Cabot Trail, the the full spectrum of the National Park, beaches and the ocean through day trips without packing up, moving and settling in to a new place every night.

The Neighborhood|Our property is located in the quaint acadian fishing village of Cheticamp and only a short drive to the world renowned Margaree River on one side, and Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the village of Pleasant Bay on the other. Travel and Leisure magazine named Cape Breton the third best island to visit in the world. The island culture commingles Scottish, Acadian, Irish, African, and native Mi’kmaq influences and is fueled by Celtic style music. Alexander Graham Bell said it best, “I have traveled the globe. I have seen the Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes and the Alps and the highlands of Scotland, but for simple beauty, Cape Breton out-rivals them all.” Other Things to NoteVisit Cape Breton Island and your heart will never leave – Born and raised in Cape Breton my roots are deep, and eternally planted in this soil. Originally from Pleasant Bay, I lived in this Acadian fishing village for more than 20 years while I raised four children. This house is filled with happy memories, if I close my eyes I can still hear the sound of laughter and the pitter patter of little feet. In 2005 with a heavy heart I moved my children from rural Cape Breton and the security of their family home to accept employment in the city. As a single mother, it has often been difficult to maintain two dwellings, but my heart just won’t allow me to let it go. It is my dream that I can someday return to the home of my heart and continue our family traditions, hopefully instilling that same sense of pride and belonging in my grandchildren. In the meantime, it is my pleasure to share my family home with you as you explore all the Cabot Trail has to offer.
