Fifteen minutes in the other direction is Hunter Mountain. Also close by are Belleayre (great family beach in the summer or skiing in the winter), Plattekill and Windham. Or, take the day to explore Woodstock and all it has to offer. The only home on a private road that runs along a wooded mountain ravine, there are private hiking trails, gorgeous views, and the sound of a rocky stream just outside the windows. The living room has a comfy leather couch, two rocking chairs, a piano, and a bluetooth stereo for streaming your own tunes as well as a record player with two handfuls of records. Enjoy the coloring books, crossword puzzles, and games. The kitchen is large with a dishwasher and awesome range/oven that includes a griddle. There's a percolator, a french press, a juicer and a waffle maker as well as a small set of basics (one pot, one dutch oven and one fry pan) along with salt, pepper and oil. Plenty of dishes, utensils, etc. The dining room seats four and looks out into the backyard. One of my favorite things to do in the mornings is to have breakfast at the picnic table. Or at night, get cozy around the fire pit in the backyard. There is plenty of wood! The PORCH, oh, the porch on this house! It's amazing. Rocking chairs, the creek across the street, hummingbirds and cardinals passing by. There is WiFI, a 48 inch TV/Roku setup for you to enjoy Netflix, HBOGo, Amazon, etc., Guest AccessMy house is yours to enjoy! Having said that, the third bedroom is yet to be set up. Though you should peek at the lovely pink & white checkerboard floor, kindly refrain from using that room. Interaction with GuestsI'll be available by phone and email throughout your stay and my family and friends are in the neighborhood. The Neighborhood15 minute drive to Catskills' best skiing spots, Hunter & Belleayre and 25 to Wyndam. Brio's in Phoenicia has the best pizza! Tubing is a big thing here as is hiking and all the nature things! Woodstock is 20mins away with a fantastic independent book shop and a multitude of restaurants and shopping. Getting AroundIf you just want to soak up the riches of Phoenicia then you don't need a car! Pine Hill Trailways bus from Port Authority stops on Main Street in town, which is within walking distance from the house. If you'd like to immerse yourself in Ulster County and the Catskills at large, having a car is best. Other Things to NoteThe house has well water. Although it's lovely for your skin, it has a mineral taste and smell, more or less so depending on the time of year. You'll want to drink bottled water. The location of the house is super relaxed but not secluded. There are neighbors. During the day cars pass frequently. New York 214 is a short direct route to Hunter Mountain. The evening is very serene. Cell service is spotty. I generally use WiFi calling in the house.

NOTE: Due to a difficult with the trip advisor/flip key communication abilities, I can only respond at home via my computer....so, if there is a delay in my response, that is why. I am very sorry - it's out of my control. I will get back to u by the evening if I am unable to respond by ipad. I VERY MUCH WANT TO SPEAK WITH YOU AND WILL! THANKS FOR BEING PATIENT : ) Romantic Paint the Night Cottage is situated on a crystal clear gentle brook and part of a four acre property and near waterfalls, flowing rivers, streams and hiking in the ancient Catskill Mountains. Skiing in winter and seasonal tubing and swimming make our area a natural Disney World. Our unique, artful, green dwelling is available by the night, week or month. Tumble into bed to the sound of our brook singing, soothed by a heated tile floor downstairs or get cozy upstairs under the stars with a book - or perhaps a cup of tea at dawn gazing out the window as snow softly falls. Rocking chair out the front door by the brook plus picnic table, other chairs by camp fire light or beneath stars a 'twinklin. Roast marshmallows.... The Cottage in the Wood best accommodates 2 people: (some stay with sl six but you must be packed fairly tight - please read on for a full description) Upstairs is our 'sleep under the stars' master bedroom with large windows directly over brook, a skylight, small library, cathedral ceilings and hardwood floors. Additional sleeping is possible THROUGH the master bedroom in an Americana themed, perfect for children or Mom with a double bed (and even a fold up floor mattress too if you want to pack people like sardines!) Be aware, at the top of the stairs one must walk a few feet through the master bedroom to reach the second studio bedroom. (A large wicker screen is provided for privacy if you are two couples but please keep in mind, these two bedrooms are close. (Consider reserving our other cottage if you are two couples seeking more intimacy while you 'paint your night') NOTE: Over two adults is 30. per person extra per 2-3 night stay, children half price, babies free if you bring along a mobile crib. There is also a full bed futon couch in the (small) downstairs kitchen day room for another option. Often 6 people have stayed especially when your spending time outside is more important to everyone than lots of space inside, but our other cottage would be much more comfortable for six people. WEDDING? BRIDAL SHOWER? REUNION? We do have two cottages... see Paint the Night Main House also listed on this rental site. It is a slightly bigger dwelling. Rent both for large gatherings. Each dwelling feels fairly private separated by 100 feet and a long 5 ft tall privacy fence - SWIMMING at local streams, lakes, state parks, tubing and rivers!! - romantic as a melody for people on a honeymoon or anniversary - the campfire is right out the front door on the edge of a gentle mountain brook - scrumptious heated tile floor in the (small) kitchen day-room downstairs - best for 2, fine for four, but is able to sleep up to 6 people in close quarters (remember, there are additional charges for more than two guests esp if only staying one day). - perennial flower gardens in season - FREE pick your own 'take home' bouquets - rabbits and deer all the time.....bears too - beautiful, fluffy towels and linens - Wifi - netflix (via computer only) - a Weber grill - limitless on demand hot water for soothing baths. - a fully equipped country kitchen...no dishwasher, just elbow grease with everything a cook would want to make a turkey - or vegetarian dish. We provide organic teas, coffees, sugar, honey, spices, cleaning supplies, environmental soap, and family style shampoo and conditioner. Slow down and enjoy...life is short! Build a blazing campfire and warm the chilly nights with a bottle 'o wine, cocoa or roast marsh-mellows. (not organic ha ha ha) We LOVE dogs however if yours is El Destructo, be prepared to compensate for damages...one dog ate my wicker basket. And rug! We have some logical, modest dog rules. Paint the Night is a NON-SMOKING dwelling. Treat yourself to a slice of life.....YOU DESERVE IT.

The SpaceComfortable and functional, this nearly 1,000' sq ft timber frame building is cozy in winter and cool in summer and has a glass-fronted woodstove in addition to its heating system. There's telephone, Time-Warner cable tv, internet via ethernet cable, and shortly I think.. working cell service in the space for Verizon customers ( to get a good signal at the moment, one may need to walk a bit closer to the main house). Originally built as a painting studio with north-facing skylights, one switch can throw 2,000 watts on the large easel, and acrylic painting supplies can be arranged if one's interested. Fresh food may be seasonally available in the garden, and maps of the owner's private hiking trail system will be provided on arrival. The bathroom has a shower and clawfoot tub, although the tub's on the small side. Although modest in scale at 50' x 20', the building's spacial proportions are based on those of a gothic cathedral; most visitors seem to recognize that they're effected pretty similarly by the space and the light in the building Guest AccessThe building is located just a few hundred feet from the owner's house, but it's sited above it, so the feel is private. It has its own small parking lot, outdoor table and seating, and streamside meditation area. Interaction with GuestsThe owner lives in the property's main house, just down the hill. Security or, well, psychological protection from the native wildlife, is provided by Jack, a ridiculously friendly half-Bernese mountain dog who's occasionally mistaken for a small bear. Jack understands English pretty well and dislikes only rabbits. The NeighborhoodThe only business in the immediate neighborhood Chichester Yoga .. it's got a great local reputation and is just a short walk down Park Road. And although there are smaller swimming holes on this property, the nicest local place to fully immese is in the Stony Clove Creek with its beautifully eroded rock formations. It's on state-owned land right on Rt 214, about half a mile away, walkable or drivable. The hamlet of Phoenicia is a two minute drive from here. Basic groceries can be found at the Phoenicia market, the nearest supermarket is ten minutes drive away, in Boiceville. The Phoenicia Diner, Sweet Sues, and Brios are all excellent choices for breakfast and lunch. Other excellent local restaurants (NYC-standard) are The Phoenician and Tavern 214 in Phoenicia, and Peekamoose in Big Indian. Woodstock is about 12 or 13 miles, a 20-minute drive. Nice town to browse and street walk. Other Things to NoteAlthough only a mile-and-a-half outside Phoenicia, this very private valley is at the literal end of the road, beyond which is a hundred-thousand-plus acres of the Westkill Mountain Wilderness.

The NeighborhoodOur house is located on a quiet dead-end street named Silver Hollow Rd. The street winds alongside the beautiful Stony Clove Creek. The neighborhood is perfect for bike riding, hiking and even winter sports at nearby Hunter and Belleayre mountains. Our house is located a few minutes from the Catskills Yoga studio and 3.5 miles from the quaint downtown of Phoenicia. We are about a 20 minute drive to Hunter/Tannersville and a 30 minute drive to Woodstock. Getting AroundBuses to and from NYC arrive daily about 4 miles away in downtown Phoenicia. If we are around we would be happy to pick you up and drop you off. Generally speaking though, as things tend to be driving distance, it's a good idea to have your own vehicle up here if you want to enjoy the area fully. Other Things to NoteWe have a small Shiba Inu dog, he generally runs around the neighborhood and is extremely friendly.
