Interaction with GuestsWe live out of state most of the year (which coincides with when the house is available), but we'll be in close communication. Also we have managers/caretaker, Dustin & Kylee, who will be available should you need anything. Our neighbors, Chuck & Patty, are also very willing to help with most anything. These phone numbers will be in the house manual. The NeighborhoodLearn more about the area on website called 'crater lakes backyard.' Activities/places roughly within an hour’s radius from the house: • Crater Lake National Park - the fifth oldest national park and the deepest lake in the United States (in summer there is scenic driving, hiking, fishing, swimming, and boat tours and in winter there is cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Highway 62 and the road to Rim Village in Crater Lake Park are plowed and open all year.) • Train Mountain (in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest miniature hobby railroad in the world with 25 miles of track – ride the train for free!) • Kla-Mo-Ya Casino • Collier Memorial Park and Logging Museum • Klamath Fish Hatchery • Town of Chiloquin (the ancestral home to the Klamath Tribes and in August it hosts the Klamath Tribes Pow Wow and Rodeo): o 6 restaurants, in town there’s The Table, The Pot Belly Café, & Joe's Chopping Block (a food concession trailer) and on Hwy 97 there’s Melita's, El Rodeo, Kla-Mo-Ya Casino Restaurant & Crater Lake Junction Travel Center also has a small fast food type restaurant inside o Bakery: “Rock n Rolls” is open Thursday to Saturday o Two grocery stores with ATMs: “Family Food Center” and “Clyde’s” o Hardware/sporting goods store: “Kircher’s” o Two very unique stores: a very extensive used bookstore “Best Little Bookstore” and an antiques/music store “Treasures Next Door” o Salon o Post Office o Community Center/Art Gallery/Library (free wifi) o 'Chiloquin Open Door' Clinic o Catholic Church and other denominations o Chiloquin State Airport • Historic Fort Klamath and museum • Wood River Wetlands • Williamson and Sprague Rivers (which connect in the middle of Chiloquin) • Upper Klamath & Agency Lakes (in summer on the west side of the lakes around Rocky Point there are swimming and boating opportunities and in winter the lakes often freeze over and offer some great ice fishing opportunities) • Annie Creek Snowpark (30 miles of groomed snowmobile/cross country skiing trails and a big area for snow sledding) • Lake of the Woods Resort (great beaches for swimming & a restaurant) • Fremont/Winema National Forest • Kimball State Recreation Site • 3 National Wildlife Refuges • Klamath Birding Trail • Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway • Umpqua River Waterfalls • Town of Chemult (dogsled races in January) • City of Klamath Falls (all major shopping and restaurant chains, nightclubs, parks, movie theater, live theaters, museums, children’s’ museum and indoor play facilities, swimming pools, golf course, ice skating rink, bowling, etc) Getting Around• House is actually quite close to Chiloquin town, you can hike over a hill and be there in about a half hour or float down the slow winding river and be there in 2 hours. But it feels much more remote since you cannot see any neighbors from the house AND to drive here you must take an indirect 2 mile long bumpy dirt road. Vehicles with more than average ground clearance (such as SUVs and trucks) are suggested year-round, although regular cars have been known to do it (slowly) when the road is dry and clear. In a bad winter, 4WD and chains may even be necessary. BUT...if you're in a pinch, our neighbor (who is almost always home & drives a big 4WD SUV) will gladly give you a lift between our property and the paved road - just please don't take advantage of his generosity. His number will be provided after I receive your waivers & tax fee. • Also a GPS will not reliably get you here, even though the route is quite simple. So directions and a map (and key lockbox info) will be provided to you after I receive your waivers & tax fee. • The House Manual binder, which will be at the house, will include maps of Chiloquin and of the area surrounding the house with good hiking spots noted. It will also include brochures and booklets from some of the area's attractions. Other Things to Note• Because the house is unoccupied between guests, there is a lot of wildlife around, & some guests stay a night while others stay a week we do not reliably keep the house stocked with food. You are welcome to whatever provisions may be there, but the safest bet is to stop at a grocery store on your way in (such as in Klamath Falls, Medford, Roseburg or Bend). Chiloquin does have 2 small grocery stores, but their selection is quite limited. • Verizon (and I believe USCellular & sometimes Sprint) cell phone networks work here, but others are unreliable. If you don’t have a phone using any of these networks and need to check the internet quickly, you can sit/stand outside our neighbors' house anytime to use their unlocked guest WIFI account (& if they see you they will likely invite you in, but we just ask that you not bother them by requesting it). The library in Chiloquin also offers free WIFI. • We believe we have fixed these problems, but they've been known to reoccur, so just in case: 1) the back-side skylight in the living room has been known to leak during prolonged heavy rain, but this is rare in our high desert climate & 2) a few times in summer we have had 1-2 bats somehow get inside the house. But they don’t bother anyone and will go to sleep if you turn the lights on & we do have a butterfly net if you feel the need to try to catch one, or you could call our caretakers to help. • Chiloquin, Oregon gets 14 inches of rain per year. The US average is 37. It gets 38 inches of snowfall. The US average is 25 inches. On average, there are 218 sunny days and 86 days with any measurable precipitation. The July high is around 85 degrees. The January low is 21. Our comfort index, which is based on humidity during the hot months, is a 73 out of 100, where higher is more comfortable. The US average on the comfort index is 44.
