The SpaceWe have a vacation home in Merida, Yucatan. Merida is a very safe, clean city on the Yucatan peninsula, about 20 km south of the coastal beach town of Progreso. Our home is situated in a tropical golf course community, which is gated/guarded and very secure. People leave their doors and windows and vehicles unlocked here all the time. The community has about 400 homes and is 8 km in circumferance. It is very tranquil and truly a tropical paradise. Our home is unique in that it is a hacienda-style structure with open central courtyard, containing a pool, as well as a rooftop terrace with loungers and palapa wet bar (tiki style). There are three bedrooms and two baths, as well as a maid/nanny quarters with bath, kitchenette and private entrance. The style of architecture is rustic (think Andalusian/Spanish farmhouse) but furnished in contemporary design and with all modern conveniences, including internet, and appliances. The house is ecologically-friendly and naturally ventilated, with A/C only in the Master Bedroom. All other rooms have overhead and standing fans. The house is surrounded by natural tropical vegetation--we are respectful of the environment and have not attempted to "tame" it.........you will find all kinds of fruit trees (coconut, mango, sour orange and others) on the property.
If you are a golfer, the location is ideal, but even if you are not (I am not) riding a bicycle, running, or simply walking through the neighbourhood is like strolling through a tropical paradise. Palm trees swaying, lush vegetation and bougainvillea blooming, exotic birds chirping, and the occasional iguana resting in the sunlight. I have two bicycles on site, and a palapa-style car port. Car exchange is not possible and you would probably either want a rental or use one of the many car services available (a Canadian friend/resident has such a service, with reasonable rates, and lives within the compound).
The community is located equi-distance to the gulf (beach town of Progresso) and Merida, just off the main Merida/Progresso hwy, and directions are very easy to negotiate. Access to modern shopping malls is less than 10 minutes down the road. The beach is a 10-minute ride away in the other direction.
Merida is known for its colonial history dating back to the 16th century, and its origins as a centre of the ancient Mayan civilization. The city is rich in artistic and cultural life and home to many museums and art galleries, as well as wonderful restaurants, bars and clubs.
Meanwhile, it also serves as a practical hub to explore all of the splendours of the peninsula: the famous Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Uxmal; amazing caves and cenotes (underground mineral-water lakes); flamingo and wildlife sancturaries; natural mangroves; old-world haciendas refurbished as boutique hotels and spas, and much more, all within easy driving distance.
There are several tour companies that operate out of Merida, as well as private drivers, who can arrange everything from aiport pick-up to shopping trips into the city to day-long excursions. Or be adventurous and rent a car, grab a map or GPS and head out to explore. We have done this many times and, again, travel in this part of Yucatan is very very safe. Driving is also comfortable--no different than negotiating any larger metropolitan area.
Merida is a city of close to 1 million people, and it's many communities provide all the variety you'll ever ask for. The colonial "Centro" of Merida dates back to the mid-16th century, and the main street of Paseo Montejo is a grand, tree-lined boulevard lined with mansions and other beautiful structures.
