Enjoy watching the hummingbirds feed at this newly renovated lakefront home on Virginia’s largest lake. Hummingbird Haven has beautiful views of one of the world’s best year-around freshwater fishing lakes with over 800 miles of shoreline and 50,000 acres of water. Kerr Lake/Buggs Island Reservoir is surrounded by more State and Federal Parks than private property. Enjoy virgin timber that time has forgotten. Rock in the double swing or rocking chairs while watching the sun fade over the untouched forest. View bald eagles soaring daily from the nest across the lake. Pull your boat (rental available) right up to your private dock and barbecue at water’s edge. This treasure is located in a private subdivision with miles of paved roads, walking trails and a private airstrip for your arrival by plane. View deer, squirrels, eagles, ducks, geese and hummingbirds from your dining room table. Golf at the local golf course located approximately two miles away. Drive to excellent restaurants and antique shops in the quaint little town of Clarksville located less than ten minutes away. Tour historic Prestwood Plantation or visit Occoneechi State Park visitor’s center to view Indian artefacts and history. Don’t miss the fall season for excellent striper fishing and spectacular views as the leaves change colors to bright yellows, oranges and reds.

Guest AccessThe entire house is open to our guests with the exception of the owners closet in one of the upstairs bedrooms and the outside shed. Interaction with GuestsWe do not live in the area, but we will be available to answer any questions you have during your stay via cell phone. The NeighborhoodWe bought this log cabin because it felt like home to us. The neighborhood is beautiful to walk/run through, which is hard to find in the Clarksville area. We love that there is only a slight slope from the lake to the house, which makes it safe for kids and elderly guests. You'll see that it's rare to find a property like ours on Kerr Lake. Lake access can be treacherous from some properties. Not ours! It's right on a beautiful, calm cove with a sandy beach nearby. Locals gather on the beach to mingle, kids swim and play horseshoes, families use the picnic table and grill for waterside lunches. It's idyllic, really. Spending the evenings or early mornings sitting on the dock and watching the heron and eagles fly overhead is so relaxing. Lounging in a float in the cove or paddling over to the sandy beach is another favorite activity. We also enjoy catching our dinner - usually catfish. It's great that you can enjoy the lake (and tasty fish) with or without a boat. I like the private cove because I can jump off the dock and swim around with my kids without worrying about boats, tubers, etc. running us over or making big waves. Plus, there's plenty of space for skiing and wake boarding on the main channel just a short boat ride away. Getting AroundThe Log Cabin is very close to Longwood Recreation Area on US Highway 15, which has a boat ramp, swimming area and playground. Bobcat's bait and tackle is also around the corner for all of your fishing needs. The proximity of the cabin to downtown Clarksville is great for short boat rides to lunch or evenings out. Two grocery stores, fast food options, elegant dining and shopping is just a 5-mile drive from the cabin by car. Other Things to NoteWATER PLAY Kerr Lake is a popular water sports destination with plenty of open water for skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, etc. If you prefer a more relaxing water experience, the cove is the place to be. Swim in the calm waters around the dock or lounge on your float and enjoy the peaceful cove with heron, geese and ducks. If you have strong arms, the dock is accessible by both strollers and wheelchairs. We have two Pelican kayaks available for renters, so you can paddle over to "Sandy Beach" or out into the open lake if you're more adventurous. The farm sits on a 496-acre tract of land that was actively farmed in the mid-1800’s by John Nelson Bruce, Sr. (b.1812). During this time period, Charlotte County was composed primarily of self-sufficient farms and plantations. Many families in 1800’s Virginia owned slaves and raised many crops consisting of corn, hay, soybeans, wheat, and tobacco. A two-story log cabin on the farm (pictured to the left) is rumored to have been home to one of these slave families when the land was owned by the Bruce family. The cabin is made of hand hewn logs with clay daubing, hand-made square nails, and V-shaped notching at the corners. The cabin is a truly individual and distinct creation made out of local materials by local people. Preservation activities are currently underway with this cabin and plans are to furnish it with artifacts from that period. ABOUT PINE LANDING, CLARKSVILLE, & KERR LAKE Pine Landing is a highly versatile home, and not many homes at Kerr Lake are able to be this accommodating; Pine does it to perfection perched right on the shore! For the tight-knit family gathering at the house, they will see the accommodations keep them together comfortably, each doing what they wish. Play games using the high-speed Wi-Fi, read a book in the sun room, whip something up in the large kitchen, lay out on the sun deck, gather in the screened porch to rock and get caught up with one another, be delighted by the brilliant 72" Sony Bravia Hi-Def TV with the Sony Bravia surround sound system, take a walk across the street to the cluster of apple trees where deer spend a lot of time, swim off the dock, or just take that well deserved nap. Sometimes, it's a family inviting a second family to join together at Pine Landing for a much busier week. Pine Landing is ready. Swimming at the dock every day, check! Got a boat, bring it! Don't have a boat, we'll help you rent one for the whole week and you will keep it at the dock of the house every night. Tuesday night, it's Bingo at the Community Center supporting the Ruritans! Wednesday, back at Pine, it's pizza and game night in the sunroom! Early in the morning, the Dads and kids all get up early to go on a guided canoe tour, meanwhile the Moms go to the Amish furniture factory a couple of towns over. The history buff in the family made tour reservations at a local gem they have on their list - Prestwould Plantation. Prestwould Plantation is the most intact and best documented pre-Civil War plantation surviving in Southside Virginia. And, if golf is your game, there's Kinderton Country Club featuring a Donald Ross designed course just five minutes from Pine Landing Perhaps your whole family is all about the lake - imagine the fun your family can discover at Pine Landing. You are at a huge, lake-front home where playing in the lake, getting out on a boat, and having fun in the sun is all there is on your agenda ... for the whole week. You've got 800 miles of shoreline and 49,000 acres of water as your playground. After a great day of family time outside, freshly tanned, you come back to the house and grill your favorite meal. The aroma coming off the grill sets everyone's appetite! Sit, relax, enjoy dinner, have that beverage and rest knowing everything is just fine at Pine Landing. The back yard is huge with a sloping walk to the lake and your own private dock with ladder. There is plenty of water depth for your big boat and launching ramps are less than five minutes from the house. So, bring your whole family, your boats and jet skis, and get ready to have plenty of quality time together. Oh, the dog is welcome, too. Whatever your plans, here is more about the house! ABOUT THE HOUSE The house has a main level and a 'cottage' level which traces back to the house's history. In the 1950's after Kerr Lake was formed, just a summer cottage was on this land. Years later, my family built the house which stands today and massively renovated the summer cottage. The main level has all of the major parts of the home - living room, sitting area around the wood-burning fireplace (not available in the summertime), dining area, kitchen, screened porch, open porch with grill, laundry room, and a full bathroom in the hall. There are two bedrooms: the Main Master Bedroom, with en-suite, has a king-size bed, a 32' HDTV and DVD player, two closets, and French doors opening out to a deck with a lake view. The Main Second Bedroom also has a king-size bed, a 32' HDTV and DVD player, a large closet, and two dressers. Both of these rooms also have luggage stands to make unpacking easier. The adults enjoy this main level of the house. The living room boasts a wood burning fireplace (available when outside temperatures are 50 and below), the 72" Sony Bravia high definition TV coupled with the Sony Bravia home theater surround sound system, cable TV with 230+ channels, cloth and leather furniture. The kitchen open concept allowing the cooks to remain involved with the action in the living room, or friends may join the cooks by sitting at the kitchen six-seat island. About six steps down from the main living area you arrive on the cottage level in the sunroom which has plenty of seating, many books, and two sets of French doors that reveal an open, sunny deck with lounge chairs and end tables. Off the sunroom, there is the entrance (with a door) to the cottage. You enter the cottage living room which has a large window looking out to the lake, plenty of seating, and a 42" HDTV with DVD. The kids can gather here - they have their own living room (that door comes in handy if they get too loud), their own cable TV with 230+ channels, three bedrooms and two full baths, and separate HVAC system. The showers in these rooms have pre-set temperature maximum control for added peace of mind. The cottage master bedroom has a queen-size bed and en-suite bathroom; the second bedroom also has a queen-size bed and en-suite, and the third bedroom – which is Pine's fifth bedroom - has two twin beds. The twin bedroom shares the bathroom of the second bedroom by entering a different door (think of a Jack & Jill bathroom). The couch in the cottage’s living room has a unique pull out bed that inflates by using a special electric air pump and is available to families with 11 or 12 people (the air pump is provided to you when you pick up the house keys). For a schematic of the house’s layout, see the photos section. ABOUT PARKING There is plenty of parking for cars and trailers because there is a large, circular driveway, and there is a spur off leading to the additional parking area by the garage (sorry, the garage itself is not available for use).

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms.” ― Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods Welcome to Soudan Cottage. This modern, off-grid retreat combines private and secluded lake access featuring a state-of-the-art dock, two coves and a 300+ acre forest teeming with natural visual beauty and wildlife. Ten minutes from the charming, lakeside town of Clarksville, VA, and an hour's drive from Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC, the cottage is ideal for a short sabbatical, a romantic weekend, or an outdoorsman's getaway. Best suited for one or two people, the cottage is able to sleep up to four comfortably. If you'd like more time to read, talk, think and relax; if you cherish a brisk walk in the woods or a cool dip in a placid lake; if you seek a night sky full of stars and the sound of crickets, then you've found the right place. Soudan Cottage might be best understood by what it isn't. It isn't a place stocked with television sets, video games, telephones, stereos and computers. You can bring those things if you need them, but otherwise you'll have just the basics here, and maybe a little lower blood pressure. The eco-friendly cottage, constructed in 2013 by contractor Steve Storm, mixes contemporary design and amenities with antique furnishings and Americana charm. Every inch of the 700 square feet is efficiently utilized with nothing wasted. Soudan Cottage was sited and designed with sustainability and a simpler, more relaxed existence in mind. Solar panels cover the southern roof line and store energy in hand made battery lockers. Ceramic tile floors throughout the downstairs kitchen, bath, and sitting area provide natural cooling in warm weather. Pine flooring in the upstairs bedroom/study offers comfort year round. In winter months, two wall mounted propane heaters -one in the bathroom- warm the entire cabin efficiently. Although there is no functioning AC, the cottage is still enjoyable in all but the hottest summer weather. It was situated to take advantage of prevailing summer breezes aided minimally by small fans. Cool night air can be circulated through the cottage's 13 windows via the upstairs ceiling fan. The kitchen minimizes waste with an energy efficient refrigerator, and a propane powered oven and range. There is no microwave, toaster, blender or electric can opener. Kitchen and bathroom water flows through a natural gravity system featuring a 100-gallon tank filled by a solar powered pump in the nearby pump house. An easy-to-read energy monitor in the kitchen displays how much solar power is stored, and how much is being transferred, so that usage can be managed smartly according to the time of day and the current weather conditions. The cottage utilizes a modern septic system and deep well. The property, which includes 300+ acres of pine and mixed forest and more than 1000 feet of secluded shoreline access on Buggs Island Lake (Kerr Lake), is one of the largest lake forest tracts in the mid-atlantic region of the United States. Located five miles from the Lake Country regional airport in Mecklenburg County, VA, you can be casting a line into the renowned tournament fishing waters of Kerr Lake within minutes of landing. Hunters will find deer, turkey, rabbit, and other game abundant in the private forest and the adjoining Corp of Engineers easement land.
