The SpacePrivate community of homes in Northern Neck of Virginia located on the lower Potomac River (where it's 6 miles wide, across from southern Maryland). The house is one block from the beach, where you can swim in the lovely freshwater lake that's restricted to canoes, kayaks and flat-bottom pontoon boats. Watch bald eagles soaring overhead (one summer, I saw an adult eagle teaching its young offspring to fish in that lake), and enjoy the peaceful retreat of the 100-acre man-made lake. Or enjoy searching for shark's teeth along the banks of the Potomac at Shark's Tooth beach in the Stratford Harbour community. Nearby, there's Stratford Hall (a 1,900-acre historic plantation that was the boyhood home of Robert E. Lee), a winery, the Westmoreland Berry farm, and the many water-based pleasures of the Northern Neck.
The master bedroom has a queen-size bed. The other two bedrooms have bunk-beds (one of the lower bunks is a full-size bed that sleeps two). So there's beds for 8 people. The living room sofa is a fold-down futon, which is queen-size, so you could have as many as 10 people sleeping in the house.
There's a DVD player in the living room (with a selection of DVDs -- but you might want to bring your own. My selection might not be your taste, and several of them are too mature for kids. There's a CD-player/radio in the kitchen/dining room area.
For Wi-Fi, you can go to the community clubhouse in Stratford Harbour, which is near the community swimming pool. One of my favorite things about being there is unplugging from the internet in the house, especially with a teenage daughter! Many guests have told me they are pleasantly surprised about this aspect of the house, and that it's one of their favorite parts of their stay.
There's also a community marina and boat launch if you bring your own powerboat or large sailboat to use in the Potomac River. We're about 30 miles north of the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay.
I have two small sit-on-top kayaks in the house, which you can use in the lake. One of them accommodates a person up to 220 pounds. The other one is just for kids under 80 pounds. There are 3 child-size water safety-vests at the house, and a couple of blowup air-chairs for use in the lake.
The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes, silverware, pots and pans, serving dishes, coffee maker, coffee bean grinder, microwave oven, toaster. There's a Webber Grill in the yard for outdoor grilling.
The house is located about an hour east of Richmond, and 2 hours southeast of Washington, DC. The community is quiet, and it's a lovely place for an outdoorsy getaway. If you are looking for a party scene and nightclubs, this is NOT the place you want to go.
Here's a link to a recent New York Times article about the Northern Neck and Stratford Hall (4 miles from my house) in particular: (do a (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) search: "northern neck virginia lost history new york times")
(I need to know how many guests will be staying in the house when you make your reservation so that the cleaning lady can plan for how much time she will need to clean and do laundry. The extra fee per night for more than 6 guests is to pay her costs.)
FYI: The house is on the market to sell now (as of 3/20/16). Because of this, I am able to offer the house for rentals on airbnb for up to 2 months in advance, but I have blocked the calendar after 2 months in advance in the event the house is sold by then. I'm sorry for this inconvenience, but if you're interested in renting further in advance than 2 months, please check back in a few weeks to see if the calendar is cleared for your travel/vacation needs. Or you can send me a request to book if the calendar still appears blocked and it's less than 2 months away. I try to keep up with the calendar, but sometimes it gets away from me. Guest AccessEntire house Interaction with GuestsI interact by email and phone. There is a woman who will be cleaning the house after your visit, and she assists me other aspects of the rentals because she lives in the community. She keeps me up to date about how many people are staying in the house, because I can't always be there to meet my guests. Other Things to NoteThis is my weekend home, and there are signs of my family in the house (some photos, drawings by my kids, etc.). I hope this is OK for you. This is not a corporate rental. If that's what you're looking for, this might not be the house for you.
