It is 30 feet in diameter (706 sq.ft. + loft) and is made of architectural fabric, hi-tech foil insulation, fir lattice & beam. The floor is made of pine. It comfortably sleeps up to eight people with: 2 queen size beds (high quality mattress) full size double futon two deluxe single beds (both high quality mattresses) The yurt is heated with a propane heater and cooled with an evaporative cooler, an overhead fan circulates the air. The design is ingenious, in the summer hot air rises through a dome which opens and closes. There is electricity inside the yurt, a sink for washing up with hot and cold potable water, a microwave and coffee pot for heating drinks, and a mini-fridge. We ask that you not cook in the Yurt however, but do your cooking in the Cook Shack. Guest AccessCook Shack Yurt guests have access to a fully equipped kitchen, which is ~ 3 minute walk from the yurt. This is a communal kitchen, so you may be sharing with other guests, a staff member, or even a silent contemplative retreatant. We schedule separate cook times for Cook Shack upon requests. The cook shack has a refrigerator/freezer, range/oven, microwave, toaster, blender, pots/pans/bowls/plates/utensils, and some oils and spices. There is a gas-fired BBQ just outside, along with a beautiful covered eating patio (the Cantina). Bathroom There is an emergency bucket-style toilet inside the yurt, a composing outhouse ~ 30 seconds walk from the yurt, and a modern flush toilet with hot and cold shower and sink ~ 3 minutes walk from the yurt (at the same building as the Cook Shack). There is also a solar-heated outdoor shower right by the hot tub! Hot Tub Yurt guests have shared access to a beautiful under-the-stars hot tub experience.

The SpaceThe canyon is famously known as the final refuge (and resting place) of the great Chiricahua Apache Chief Cochise. This rugged natural fortress was, for some 15 years back in the 1860s, the home and base of operations for Cochise and his people. Many wonders await you in the canyon - hiking interpretive trails, bird watching, traversing gentle boulders, climbing world-class cliffs (link), and incredible stargazing! There are miles of trails to explore the unique ecology and geology of the area. Here you can fill your days and evenings with the honest pleasures of life…you will feel as though you've stepped back in time to experience the enchantment of the Old West. There is campground a quarter of a mile at the end of the road. There, interpretive trails take you amid the boulders and among the junipers and oaks. This canyon has few full-time residents. You may (if you're lucky) see one or two friendly neighbors walking or driving down the dirt road during the day but generally, the canyon is secluded and quiet. You'll have full access to the comfortably decorated cabin, including two bedrooms (one queen, one full size bed), living room with floor to ceiling rock fireplace (with comfortable and sleepable couch), modern kitchen, full bathroom and two patios from which to enjoy quite different views. This is a perfect place to enjoy a short or extended getaway to truly benefit from nature's serenity. While we promise it may be difficult to leave the cabin, there are some very cool excursions within a 45-minute drive, including a drive to Bisbee (a quaint and now artsy former mining town), Kartchner Caverns (largest wet caverns in the U.S.), Tombstone (the famed “town too tough to die"), and lots of smaller ghost towns along the way. The property is pet friendly but it's not wise to let them run unattended. We ask that guests stay for a minimum of three nights to offset the cost of cleaning/maintaining the house. If you would like to stay for less than three nights, please send us a message, we'll get back to you. There is Internet and Wifi access, a large flat screen television with DVD player (no cable/satellite) and a great collection of movies, a few board games, and a small adult mountain bike to take jaunts down the trails. There are two bedrooms, each containing a comfortable queen size bed. The master bedroom also has an ottoman that opens to a sleeping for a child. The couch in the living room is one of the most favored sleeping areas and can sleep two with the pillows removed. Additionally, there are comfortable bed cushions in the master closet that can serve as additional sleeping or resting areas. Guest AccessYou'll have access to the entire house and property. Interaction with GuestsWe will not be on (or nearby) the property during your stay, but we'll provide you with everything you need to know about the property, a little bit about the area, and brief recommended shopping list for your stay. The NeighborhoodThe hiking trails are magnificent, but one of the best aspects of our house in particular is that it is right up against the granite cliffs so you can start hiking up boulders right from the backyard. Getting AroundThe cabin is approximately a 90-minute drive from Tucson International Airport. You'll need a car to get out here (that probably goes without saying) and if you're renting, an SUV would be a little more comfortable on the dirt roads, but a car can navigate them without any problem. Duting the summer or winter rainy season, washes may be full with water and a high profile car is warranted. There is ample parking for up to four cars. Other Things to NoteThere is no municipal garbage collection in this area and all garbage created during your stay must be taken with you when you leave. We would appreciate it if you reduced the amount of waste you produced during your stay. Sorting by recyclables and waste is advised. "Leave No Trace" and "Pack It In, Pack It Out" are good mottos to remember for this area.

A metal roof covers a concrete porch area that provides dining and patio furniture for your comfort. You are at the base of the Dragoon Mountains and under a sky in which the Milky Way is visible on clear nights. Guest AccessYou are welcome to explore and enjoy the entire forty acres of this property. There is a wash traversing the property that can become a running river during heavy rains but is usually dry. Walk along the wash canopied by trees or visit the butterfly garden in front of our home. Interaction with GuestsThe hosts are very friendly and will enjoy chatting with guests. We will provide a notebook of information specific to our area (sites, activities, restaurants, stores) as well as pamphlets and magazines of interest. The NeighborhoodYou are only 15 minutes away from our little town of Sunsites, where just about anything you want or need is available (Gas station, two restaurants, a Dollar Store, a Beauty Salon that offers manicures/pedicures, massages, and facials,...). There is a grocery store called the Produce Wagon that stocks most food needs for all types of diets (Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten Free and Lactose Intolerant) only 15 minutes away on Hwy 191. Within a half-hours time, you can visit the historical town of Willcox. Little more than an hour in any direction are a variety of sites, such as Tombstone, Bisbee, Kartchner Caverns, Fort Bowie and the Chiricahua Mountains. We have nine wineries within this area for those who enjoy trying wine made from locally grown grapes. Getting AroundYou would need a car when staying in this area. There is no public transportation available. Most sites are accessible by either Interstate 10, or for the adventurous, back roads through the many small towns within Cochise County. The last two miles of road are packed dirt with some washboard. The roads have been accessible by vehicles similar to Honda Civics and Toyota Camrys. You do not need a 4WD to access our home, but it is always nice to have if you want to explore places off road. Other Things to NoteYou will be in the middle of the Southeastern part of Arizona. In any direction are varied sites and activities of interest. This area has a great degree of historical significance in relation to early settlements of the West. We have varied flora and fauna due to the small footprint of people living in this area. We are at an elevation of 4,500 feet above sea level, thus this area is a mix of desert and high chapparal (scrub trees and bushes). You are within 10 minutes of Cochise Stronghold. The history of these mountains, and the Apache who called this area home, is described on plaques and there are several hikes within this range.
