Arriving at the Alpine House, a cool breeze washes over your face…you’re greeted by the sounds of birds chirping and the rapid “knock knock knock” of a woodpecker in the back woods…. As far as the eye can see, emerald green forest. You’ve reached the Irish Catskills. Sit on the veranda in one of the white Adirondack chairs with a glass of cold ice tea or lemonade and watch the white-tailed deer grazing peacefully nearby - then watch as they gallop through the front yard, white tails at full staff. Catch a glimpse of the hawk as it flies by lightening fast though the trees… its screech warns those nearby its on its hunt. Walk into the backyard and look up to see the sun filtered through the branches of the trees, and something magical happens: You’ll feel the stress roll off of you in waves. The quiet tones of nature bring renewal. Here, the worries of the city are far, far away…. Take a stroll out into the meadow. Watch as a rainbow emerges from the clouds after an afternoon shower… Life is simpler here. Your time in the Irish Catskills will take you back to another era, an era of simpler pleasures - enjoy a tag sale on the side of the road down at Mooney’s, where you’ll discover glorious hidden treasures at a fraction of their city prices… Take a drive down to Milk Run and enjoy a hand-made soft service ice cream, in flavors ranging from salted caramel to creamsicle. If you’d like some true Irish flavor, head on down at the end of the day to the local pub, the Shamrock, and hoist a pint or two of Guinness or a Dark & Stormy, and listen to the locals spin their yarns. The yearly East Durham Irish festival is only about smile away, where you’ll experience Irish culture food and music, from bands like the Whistlin’ Donkeys, to sitting down for a cup of tea with Terry Patterson to hear more about the historic Donegal Cottage, or come and explore arts and crafts and great food at the Irish Arts festival in July. If you want something more active, play a round of golf a the top-rated Sunnyvale Golf Course. For family fun, the Zume Flume water park is a short drive away. There’s also an organic farm nearby to source local food for your dinner. Whatever you’re seeking - be it respite from the city, privacy or a quiet writer’s retreat, the Alpine House will welcome you with its history and charm.
