The SpaceThis lovely, rustic cottage in rural Greeley Hill is just 25 miles from Yosemite National Park. You'll love the country atmosphere both inside and out. The two bedroom house features knotty pine walls throughout its interior and a full kitchen, while the view from the front porch looks over Bean Creek Preserve, the largest pristine meadow in Mariposa County. You're surrounded by lofty pines and black oaks and the stars at night show an array of dazzling lights unequalled at lower elevations. You never share the cottage with anyone else; your hosts live in their own house right next door. You can get away from it all or fill your days with activities. A famous local swimming hole, Rainbow pools, 14 miles away, features a waterfall: while 7 miles down the hill in Coulterville is a municipal pool (open summer only) just right for family activities. This is Gold Country with its rich history; you might want to try your luck at gold panning. We are just off Highway 132, the Historic John Muir Trail. And then there's Yosemite, one of the world's most magnificent destinations, close enough for fun-filled day trips. There are many cafes and restaurants in the adjacent communities of Groveland and Coulterville. Or, if you want to dine in, full service grocery shopping is just a mile away. Please note that the local grocery market closes at 7 pm in the summer and 6 pm in the winter. The kitchen has all the utensils, pots and pans, bowls and china you could need. We will be glad to provide you with fresh-ground Peet’s coffee for you to brew in the provided coffee press. Your hosts are both artists; Jim is a retired art professor and Dawn is an artist and published poet. Artwork abounds in the cottage and around the grounds. The 5 acre property features nearly 3 acres of woods to stroll and admire the views. Or break out your paints and sketch the scenery. At night you can admire the array of stars. There are no street lights in Greeley Hill to take away from the celestial display. Back inside, you may watch movies or videos about Yosemite's attractions, connect to the internet via wi-fi or just stretch out on the master bedroom's queen size bed. The second bedroom features a double bed-sized futon, while two folding single futons are just right for children. All linens and blankets are provided, along with bath towels. There is no telephone service to the cottage, insuring a peaceful atmosphere (you may use our land line for emergencies). Most cell phones don't work in Greeley Hill, Verizon seems the only supplier that has service in a few spots. You can, indeed, get away from it all. Please keep in mind that the cottage is 70 years old, and some of the infrastructure is 70 years old, too. Electricity and plumbing have been upgraded and have passed a county safety inspection. The bathtub is always a problem; you may notice some staining. Rest assured we have done our best to eradicate stains. Our plumber says the only way to replace the bathtub is to take the old one out through the exterior wall, a major project. Our daily rate includes 11% Mariposa County Transient Occupancy Tax. Bring your family; the cottage can accommodate up to 6 people if at least 2 of them are children. Guest AccessFive acres of mixed farm/forest perfect for wandering or painting, with magnificent views across the meadow. Please be aware that this is open, uneven ground with slopes and gopher intrusion in places; watch your step! Interaction with GuestsAs long time residents, we are happy to share our knowledge about local places to see and places to go. We are happy to share all this information with you; just ask. We enjoy hearing where our guests have gone and what they've done, but understand the need for privacy. We will only interrupt your visit for business related issues; otherwise we stay as unobtrusive as possible. The NeighborhoodGreeley Hill is a wonderful, rural area with meadows and pine/cedar/oak forest. There are many walking trails in the national forest that lies immediately adjacent to private land. (The nearest hiking trail to our property is the Ponderosa Trail, several miles from us by car.)The people here are very friendly and helpful, always willing to talk about the area. Greeley Hill now has a pizza parlor, Bambino's Pizza, just 3/4 mile from our place!! Bambino's is open until 8 pm, 8:30 on Friday and Saturday. Groveland, 14 miles away, is home of the world famous Iron Door Saloon, where locals and tourists meet for a good time. The Iron Door also features meals either in the bar or next door in the restaurant. It's open every day until 10 pm, later on weekends. Groveland also has many restaurants from fast food to California Cuisine dining. We are located on the historic John Muir Trail, the road he took to Yosemite. Did you know Muir herded sheep through Greeley Hill on his way to the high country? Coulterville, 7 miles down the hill from us, is home of the John Muir Geotourism Center and the Northern Mariposa County Historical Center. Getting AroundWe can give you directions to the Art Farm from just about anywhere; email us for specifics. Ample parking is right here on the farm. There is no public transport to or in Greeley Hill. The Yosemite Area Rapid Transit System (YARTS) bus stops in nearby Buck Meadows every morning during the summer for day trips into and out of Yosemite. Leave your car in Buck Meadows and travel in air-conditioned comfort. In Yosemite you have access to frequent hybrid buses that take you all around the valley floor for free! They run all day, and in the evening catch YARTS for a leisurely ride back. Other Things to NoteThis is fire country! Four years ago the Rim Fire came within 4 miles of Greeley Hill. Outdoor fires and barbecues are banned this summer, and we ask that you only smoke on the cottage's front porch. In fact, outdoor smoking is banned this year in Mariposa County, including on private property. The front porch is a safe place to smoke.

We are a destination with its own beauty and charm, a beautiful valley, a former Yosemite Miwok Indian village site. This site began the first tourist trail into Yosemite in the 1860s, a trail that John Muir walked.) History tours are available. There are miles of trails, swim holes and a limestone cave to explore. See the old rock work that built the Coulterville free trail into Yosemite in the 1850s and the old stone buildings still standing today. Guest AccessGuests can hike our 300 acres of trails and have access to two swim holes, a cave to explore, and nearby swim holes as well. We are on a County maintained dirt road that is assessable by a regular 2 wheel drive vehicle pretty much year round, with few exceptions. In the dry months your car will get dusty! We truly are away from it all, and a great destination unto itself, yet close enough to make this your stopover to and from Yosemite, as well as home base on your journeys into the park. Other Things to NoteDo not use GPS as it misleads. Use the map I provide once you book. You should try if at all possible to arrive before dark, since navigating in the forest at night can be more difficult, at least for your first drive in. You will need to arrive by 9PM.
