A perfect getaway for nature loving folks like me who desire a tranquil setting to refresh and rejuvenate. Thank you for all your thoughtful touches, the wooly socks, the candles, your homemade muffins, etc. What a treat! I love the celebration of local artists, shopping from the convenience of ones accommodation has been a delightful experience. This has been a wonderful weekend away from the hustle and bustle of my real life. I will not hesitate to call you and stay again" Victoria, BC “Suzanne, we have been so pleasantly surprised by the remoteness and silence (except for the lovely birds chirping) of the cabin. It provides for restful sleep on the luxurious bed (so soft and plush) in the upstairs alcove. We also enjoyed having a kitchen and a washer and dryer. It’s a great home away from home. Also, the pictures posted on your website really do it justice, which is unusual. Thank you for your hospitality. Miami, Florida "We found a paradise on Lake Trail Road and a warm hospitality in this perfect place. Thank you Suzanne for everything and of course for the fresh apple juice and the dried apples. We will always remember our week at Applewood Cottage and hope to be back sometime soon.” St. Monty, Switzerland “Thank you!! What a glorious stay we have had here...even with 2 little children (”Oh Mom, I so so so love our new house!”) They were flabbergasted to see the outdoor shower! I loved the funky little touches everywhere and the attention to detail. Very luxurious. Loved listening to the samples of local music as well. Just an enchanting time!” Edmonton, Ab "A wee bit of paradise! This was the best holiday we’ve had yet! Sitting at the back in the growing darkness and stillness...the outdoor shower...the seclusion and quiet...a piano to sit down to 20 times a day...and yet close to the rest of the world. Thanks for sharing this part of Eden with us!" Calgary,Ab “For those who think they have to go thousands of miles to find some place special, don’t know of Applewood Cottage! Secluded and peaceful, spotlessly clean, warm and cosy and all of this close to home. What more could a person want?! Definitely a place to come back to again and again!” Saanichton, BC “The cottage was just what we were looking for. A wonderfully quiet and secluded place to relax and enjoy birdsong and to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Thanks for making that possible and thanks for the delicious apple juice and muffins.” Munich, Germany “We are two Winnipeg journalists who found your lovely cottage on the internet...what a lovely, comfortable, charming place to stay! We’ve skied, hiked, kayaked, and golfed, and I think the Valley is paradise...especially in February! Thanks so much for the great breakfasts and the coffee...a memorable holiday.” Winnipeg, Mba “This place is amazing! Best birthday present ever! Your attention to detail is incredible...tea, scrabble, piano, music, chopin recordings, bathrobes...we loved our stay and will be back for sure! You’re amazing... thanks for this place.” Victoria, BC “This place was everything it promised and more...peace, cosy, relaxing. Such a cute little cottage!” Dusseldorf, Germany “This was one of the most relaxing experiences I’ve had in awhile...and we were trying to shop for our wedding so that says a lot about the tranquility of Applewood! It is so beautiful, clean and peaceful. We will be using Applewood Cottage from now on when we stay in Courtenay...we are happy it is available in the winter too! Thanks again!" Port McNeill, BC “Lovely cabin...we really enjoyed our stay and had a merry xmas here! Fantastic selection of books!” Wells, BC

The SpaceThis spacious, newly furnished one-bedroom apartment is in the heart of historic Cumberland, BC (aka Dodge City). It occupies the entire main floor of an 1895 house (originally the Presbyterian parsonage) and has been updated over the years without losing its charm. The apartment features a large bedroom with king-sized bed, ample storage space and 32" TV. It opens onto a living room with loads of natural light, funky leather couches and a new 43" plasma-screen television. The adjoining dining area has a double pull out bed for up to two extra guests (apartment max. 4 occupants). There is both a powder room (toilet and sink) and a bright, separate bathing area (tub/shower and sink). The fully equipped kitchen is stocked with essentials, with a cosy breakfast nook that leads onto a large deck and a shared, fenced backyard. There is also a south-facing, enclosed sunroom/porch at the front of the house, ideal for drinking coffee and reading the newspaper in the mornings. The apartment price is based on double (2) occupancy, with $15 day/per additional person to a maximum of four (4) occupants. Single occupants are eligible for a discount of 10%. We are dog-friendly, as long as your pooches are quiet and well-behaved ($15/day per dog to a maximum of 2 dogs). Please see "House Rules" for more details. We do not accept other kinds of pets. Our daily price does not change seasonally. The daily rate is $115, the weekly rate is $690.00 (seven nights for the price of six). Please ask about pricing for longer term stays. Interaction with GuestsAccess to the apartment is through a numeric keypad (no keys). Upon booking, we will provide you with the current code. We have compiled a binder of house rules, bike trails and attractions, and are happy to provide you with more detailed information if needed. We live two blocks away so are close at hand. The NeighborhoodThe apartment is next door to the United Church (built 1886), an exceptionally quiet neighbour! The church bell only rings for a minute at 10am on Sunday mornings and on special occasions (weddings, etc.). The apartment is one block from the historic village main street (Dunsmuir) and three blocks from the famous XC mountain-bike trails of Dodge City (aka Cumberland). Cumberland was a powerhouse coal-producer until the 1950s and has many interesting historical buildings and mining artifacts. Attractions include the museum, numerous cafes and boutiques, a small organic grocery store and an artisan chocolate shop. Comox Lake for paddling, boating and swimming is 7km away (about a 15 minute bike ride on a flat road). The water is cold enough to be refreshing in the summer heat! The Village of Cumberland is part of the Comox Valley, a coastal region of about 67,000 inhabitants that includes Mount Washington Alpine Resort ((URL HIDDEN) Cumberland is approximately one hour's drive (100km) north of Nanaimo and three hours from Victoria, both of which have direct ferry links to Vancouver ((URL HIDDEN) Comox Valley Airport ((URL HIDDEN) has daily flights to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, and float plane service is available in nearby Comox ((URL HIDDEN) The wild beaches and surfing of Tofino are a three-hour drive away. Campbell River (a 45 minute drive north) has amazing fishing and wildlife. Getting AroundA car is recommended to get around the Comox Valley, as bus service is reliable but slow (we can help you arrange a car rental at the airport). Cumberland is a very bike friendly place but does not have a full-service grocery store or mall. Big box stores, large grocery stores and the retail core of the area are located in the nearby larger town of Courtenay (an 8-minute drive away). All beds, linens and towels are brand new, as are the leather couches and living room furniture and electronics. High-speed wireless Internet and cable television are included. Check-in is after 3pm and check-out is 11am. The apartment has keypad (numeric) entry, so we are not required to meet you in person for entry or check-out. However, if you arrive late at night or check out very early we request that you please be as quiet as possible so as not to disturb the house tenants or neighbours. I have two bikes available or you can try out the garden swing tucked under the grape vines or the colourful but cozy garden reading room I've just finished building.

Close to hiking, lake swimming, bike trails and ocean kayaking, you can plan exciting day trips from my house and spend time enjoying the artsy village life. We have it all! Great shopping, culture, four star dining, hot nightlife...why go anywhere else? My home is a classic Cumberland home with a simple charm. Windows look out to the flower gardens in the front. Guests rooms are located in the dormer style rooms upstairs. The smaller room has a single mattress and another comfy chair. There is also a single futon in the larger room. A family of four can stay comfortably. A double futon bed in the living room (semi private) is another option. In the summer there is room for tenting in the garden or on the cot under the grape arbour. Challenged with stairs? The downstairs is wheelchair accessible and a bed can be set up in the library/music room. Guest AccessThe large (heated tiled floor tiled floor) bathroom is outfitted with a long claw foot bathtub, and a spacious shower stall with two shower heads for tandem showers. The dining room is the heart of the house where there is a piano. The table sits six comfortably. Guests are welcome to use the whole house except for the private rooms of your host. The kitchen has limited access; simple meals may be prepared by guests depending on the length of your stay but mostly Joanna will be providing the meals. It is close to the woods and just down the road is the main street where lots of interesting shops and cafes are open. This is a rustic, semi-rural village in the forrest. People fall in love with Cumberland. There are great restaurants in Cumberland- if you prefer, I will cook for you, and sing while I cook...
