Getting AroundAlthough there is no public transportation within the county of Alleghany, you are always welcome to enjoy riding your bicycles. Other Things to NoteIf you love nature, there are a great many things to see in and around Covington including the Falling Spring, Gathright Dam, Lake MooMaw, Douthat State Park. We are 35 mile from beautiful Lexington, VA with all of it's amazing attractions and 40 miles from White Sulfur Springs, WV.

Great location on the famous Jackson River, well known for fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout. Property contains four acres and borders the river with plenty of shoreline. Besides fishing for trout, the river provides a good opportunity for kayaks, rafting, canoeing, or slow individual floats down the river. The river has five put ins upriver as the water flows from the Gathright Dam towards the cottage and property. Directly across the river from the property , lies the Jackson River Scenic Trail. It follows the river bed for about 9 miles providing a great hiking and biking adventure for observing the river, and various wildlife including deer, geese, birds, ducks ,squirrel,rabbit, beaver, mink, otter, and bear. The cottage is located at about mile marker four, so hiking can proceed either north or south along the Jackson River Trail. Within 25 miles is located two famous Resorts. The first is The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. and the second is The Greenbriar in White Sulfur Springs, WVA. The Jackson River Trail and both Resorts can be Googled on line for maps and great detail on activities available. Activities vary with the season and include skiing, tennis, golf, hot mineral baths, archery, and many more listed on line. Our cottage contains three bedrooms. The upstairs bedroom has one king bed and two twin beds. The small downstairs bedroom has a bunkbed setup with a double bed on the bottom and a single bed on top.The third master bedroom has a king bed and a queen sofa sleeper, There is also a pullout trundle bed under the bottom double bed. In the living room there is a sleeper/sofa that open into a queen bed. Outside the cottage, in a separate building that faces the river on a cliff, and contains a futon sleeper. The building is insulated, and has electricity. Lastly, the final sleeping area is a large 20 foot wide teepee that can sleep 12 in sleeping bags. The kitchen is modern and contain all appliances, dishes and utensils. There is dishwasher. Each of the two bathrooms have only showers. There is ,however, an outdoor shower that is 8 feet by 8 feet and 8 feet tall. The outdoor shower has hot water. The cottage is wifi and has high speed internet. There is a 50 inch TV downstairs and a 42 inch Tv upstairs, both with multi channel access. A gas fireplace is located in the living room. A two car garage houses canoes ,kayaks, white water rafts and bikes. Exit 16a off Interstate 64 in Covington Va. Go exactly 5 miles north on Rt. 220 north. Turn left on Jackson River Road and go exactly 2 miles to the cottage at 3711 Jackson River road. The cottage is on the right side of the road.

Windcliff Acres at Escatawba is located at 3621 Midland Trail Road in Callaghan. The city of Covington is only 6 miles away with shopping: a super Walmart and a Food Lion grocery store. Many recreational opportunities are within a short distance; The Greenbrier and the Homestead are World class golf resorts under 20 miles away. The historic Humpback Bridge is within minutes of the house and there are many other historic sites nearby. Roanoke, Va. and Lewisburg W. VA have airports that service the area, along with Amtrak which comes into Clifton Forge and White Sulphur Springs. The house was built in 1970 by Marie and John Bradley Jr. of Callaghan, Va. as their retirement home. The house is handicap accessible and dog friendly. The well water at the house has been said to be the freshest tasting water in the county.The house has 3 bedrooms with ample sleeping arrangements for up to 8 adults in the bedrooms (one room with a twin trundle bed, one room with one queen bed and one room with 2 double beds). There are 2 full baths by the bedrooms and one half bath off the kitchen/laundry area. The newly updated kitchen has stainless steel appliances and a deep-well sink with attached drain board, disposal and butcher block counter tops. There are three fireplaces in the house, though it can be heated with thermostat controlled baseboard with wall heaters to meet individual preferences. We do have central air and heat throughout the house. There are ceiling fans in all the bedrooms, den and kitchen. There is always a good breeze throughout the house when the windows are opened and there is an attic fan for circulating the air, day or night. The house also has a den and living room. There is comfortable seating throughout the house. The back and front porches have ceiling fans for use in the summer months. The house has a new bronze metal roof and is well insulated. Parking for approximately 6-8 cars is available on the property. There is ample parking for up to 6 cars. The house has a land-line with a local phone number for local calls only. There is internet access with wifi in the house. There are also 2 televisions on cable service. Locally, the house is situated within a half a mile of 2 grocery store/gas stations and a bakery is about 3 miles away. The view from the back porch overlooks the quaint community village of Callaghan. Easy on and off access to the interstate 64 and lovely mountain roads that direct you to river and lake fishing. A great place to visit and enjoy with a variety of enriching amenities that the mountains and this historic area provide. Festivals and entertainment abound, but also a great place to just get away from the chaos of everyday city life. The house is located at the top of a cliff and set back about 100 feet and overlooks the hamlet of Callaghan. The property has 38 acres that are mostly wooded with some grassed areas near the house and in a few fields with trails for hiking. It is rustic with lots of trees. There is a lot of wildlife that appear on the property from time to time: Deer, fox, squirrels rabbits and many species of birds. The Interstate highway divides the property on one side and the old Midland Trail (Route 60) on the other two sides. Dunlap Creek borders the property across the road and the Cowpasture River is near by – and both have great fishing available. There is public golfing and a Recreational Lake available near by. There are many small towns within close driving distance for Shopping/Antiquing. Two 5 star resorts are within 30 min. drive. There are natural hot springs for "taking the waters" in Hot Springs and a variety of restaurants within a short drive too.

The SpaceThis comfortable 2 bedroom home sleeps 6 people easily. Each wing off the great room has a king sized bed and it's own full bathroom. The queen size futon in the great room folds out to accommodate two more. There is a full kitchen with an island counter in the great room. The great room exits to a sunny all season room and then out to the deck for great views and access to the lower deck and the Jackson River. Kitchen is equipped with all the basics. Linens are provided. Guest AccessFull access to all living spaces and deck. The property has a lower deck for easy access to the river. The surrounding area offers kayaking, hiking, fishing, and biking. You can also take advantage of the hiking trails within walking distance from the house, and so much more! The SpaceOur cottage is perfect for a couple looking for a romantic get away, a family that loves adventure and fly fisherman & women who enjoy a great day of fishing on the river. One thing we love about our cottage and the area is the amount of stars that you are able to see at night. And without internet or cable, you really unplug and unwind. There is a TV with plenty of DVDs. Guest AccessGuests will have access to the entire house as well as the whole yard and river frontage. For kayaking, there are several reputable outfitters to rent from. We have a Guest notebook complete with area restaurants, hiking trails, places to rent kayaks & bikes as well as names for fly fishing guides. Interaction with GuestsWe own the house next door and are frequently there. We can be as available to our guests as they need or want us to be. The NeighborhoodWe are at the end of a cul de sac. The cottage sits on 4 acres of land with about 400 feet of river frontage. We have close to 3200 feet of fishing rights up river. The Jackson River Scenic Trail is right behind our property. Perfect for walking and biking directly from the house. Cliff View public Golf Course is a 5 minute drive and the Cascades Golf Course, The Homestead's premier golf course, is a short 10 minute drive away. The Homestead Resort is a 20 minute drive - perfect for a delicious dinner. We truly have something for everyone! Getting AroundAn automobile is necessary to get out and enjoy all the things the area has to offer. We have parking for several cars. Other Things to NoteSheets and towels are supplied. We are on a well and septic system. The Hot Springs area is known for the healing sulphur springs and these are prevelant in the area. So, if there is a sulphur scent in the water, know that it is native to the area and is perfectly fine. In fact, it is thought to be good for hair, skin and nails.

Cottage on Jackson River sit on four acres bordering the river. Great for fly fishing brown and rainbow trout. Kayaks and canoes are used often on the river. Three B/R's. First B/R has over/under bunk bed with twin on top and double on bottom and a slid out trundle under the double making a total of four sleeping spots. Upstairs B/R has king and two twins thus sleeping four. A sleeper/sofa in front of the fireplace has a queen mattress and sleeps two. The third bedroom is the master bedroom and has a king bed , and a queen sleeper as well as it's separate bathroom. The laundry room is off the hallway in the master bedroom, Separate bunkhouse has children's chairs and table and toys , but could house a queen futon moved from the porch and sleep two. Teepee along river is 20 feet by 18 feet and sleeps eight. A large fire pit is nearby for late nite talks or roasting marsh mellows or hot dogs. Great for kids.Both bathrooms in cottage have shower only. Large separate OUTDOOR shower is enclosed and 8 feet by 8 feet with hot water. Kitchen modern with range, micro, refrig/ice maker, and dish washer. Cottage is wifi with 50 inch TV in living room and 40 inch TV in upstairs B/R. Both H/D high speed cable multi channel. Laundry room has washer dryer. Cottage has fireplace with propane and remote control. Two car garage is detached and houses canoes, kayaks and rubber white water raft. The raft hold 6-8 people and is self bailing of water. Canoes, kayaks, white water raft, floats, paddles, and life jackets are all available to guests. There is a variety of sizes of lifejackets including infant, child ,teenager and adult. Great for family floats on the river. Bottom line is the cottage and grounds are fishing group or family group friendly .Floating, canoeing and kayaking are all very popular .The cottage is located north of Covington, Va. and is close to two well known Resorts. The Homestead Resort, located about 20 miles north on The Sam Snead Highway(route # 220 north) has world famous golf courses and features hot springs and is located in Hot Springs. The Greenbriar Resort is 25 Miles west on I-64 West and also has world famous golf hosting the national PGA tournament over the forth of July Weekend. Both resorts have horse back riding, falconry, guided fishing, boating,and hiking as well as tennis and golf. The Greenbriar also has a full Casino . Both Resorts have great shopping on the premisses or in the local area for the ladies to use while the guys fish. The cottage is good any season of the year and all seasons have their particular activities that are special to the time of year. The general area includes multiple ,hiking trails,rivers ,lakes, and State Parks. The Jackson River Trail is directly across the river from the cottage at about mile marker four. You can Google the trail and see the entire nine mile trail as it follows the river upstream towards the Gathright Dam. Also, Google the Gathright Dam, Douthat State Park and the Jackson River/Kings Grant Property for additonal areas of interest.

Remember when you were young and there was a creek somewhere you went and looked under rocks for crawdads and caught a few brim? Well this is that place. A small spot for relaxation and the enjoyment of the beauty of nature. The cabin is situated right on the creek for easy access for swimming or kayaking. Convenient to Roaring Run State Park and the national Forest. 30 miles to the Blue Ridge Parkway. This cabin features three bedrooms, dining room, living room, and kitchen. Hammock and fire ring in yard. Gas logs in living room. Available year round. Fishing in a trout stocked creek on property! Please note that this rental is a rustic summer cabin. We heat with gas logs and a wall heater. If your expectations are camping, you will be very happy. There will be bugs, especially if lights are left on at night. There's an occasional mouse that finds it's way in when the local black snake doesn't get it. 10% of our guests feel that that the cabin is not up to their cleanliness standards. The other 90% are fine with the condition. If you think you are in that 10% of folks with high cleanliness standards, this might not be the place for you. There are some cobwebs and the occasional bug. this place is cleaned by a man who's not to good at it. As long time campers, we love it!

Master bedroom with bath, 2nd bedroom with queen size bed, 3rd bedroom with bunk beds (also have toddler bed if needed). Living room has 3 sleeper sofa's which will sleep 6. The kitchen and living room have cathedral ceilings with skylights. The living room features a tv with satellite, stereo and dvd player. It has a wood burning fireplace and there are also games and movies for your convenience. The kitchen is full and completely functional with a large country table which seats 8 comfortably. Out the kitchen door, it opens up to a large screened in porch which overlooks the water. We love having our morning coffee there. The screened in area is large enough (has a large table) so you have the option to eat outdoors as well. There is also a cooler on the screened in porch for your use. Outside the screened in porch also has an open deck in which grilling is perfect. Under the house, there is a patio area in which you could eat, read, or relax in the hammock. There are corn hole boards and bags for a friendly game. Or take the canoes, kayak or tubes out for a float. Go fishing or swimming right on the property. At night enjoy the large firepit with a fire for smores or cook your meal of hot dogs on it.
