The SpaceHistoric 1799 salt water farm house-original pumpkin pine floor in large dining room overlooking ocean. Living room and bedrooms with antique decor, original claw foot tub with shower in bath, large kitchen new in 2010- house surrounded with fields on barn side and stretching down to shore. There is a large shared deck overlooking the view also charcoal grill and propane fired lobster cooker. A small "Zen" garden occupies the space between units on the quiet side of the house There are 3 units in this compound, They share the deck, fire pit, lobster cooker, charcoal grill, 6 bikes and the use of 2 cars. A shuttle runs from the dock to the end of the island every 1/2 hour from 10-5 in the summer. It will pick you up or drop you off in front of the Red House Compound. Guest AccessGt. Cranberry Island is 3 miles long and 1 mile wide at the widest point. We supply an island car for transportation to and from the dock, 6 bicycles to explore the streets and lanes, lawn games, wifi, satellite TV with disc player. There is a general store by the dock with basic groceries and a limited organic selection, soft serve ice cream, cafe, fresh baked goods daily, fresh fish by order. The Cranberry House Museum operated by the Historical Society has interesting exhibits showing life on the islands through the centuries . Old movies are shown free in the upstairs theatre (they would like a donation) on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights. Popcorn and drinks are available for $1. There are numerous art exhibits and special events throughout the summer. Cranberry House also has Hitty's Cafe- an outdoor restaurant serving lunch and snacks and breakfast and dinners by advance order. The Whale's Rib is a fun little gift shop. Polly, the owner, has a nice variety of wares, some locally produced. The Heliker-Lahotan Foundation hosts up and coming visiting artists throughout the summer. They have periodic openings where the public is invited. The Cranberry Explorer is a free (donations accepted) 8 passenger golf cart which leaves the dock every 1/2 hour giving tours and transportation down the main road of the island. Great Cranberry Island is really a place to get away from the "T-Shirt District"and all the touristy crowds of Bar Harbor. Our guests are free to roam the foot and bike paths and explore the rock bound coast ,enjoying the many peaceful, scenic vistas which are a natural part of island life. Interaction with GuestsIf we are on the island, we like to meet and greet them. Our residence is actually in Scarborough, Maine , 3 1/2 hours away. We are always in contact via cell phone, text or email The NeighborhoodThe neighbors are cheerful and friendly. Getting AroundThe Cranberry Explorer leaves the dock every 1/2 hour daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. They go right by The Red House and will drop off guests. On the mainland, the Island Explorer buses leave from the dock in Northeast Harbor and go all over Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. They have bike trailers for the rider's bicycles and there is no charge-they are underwritten by LLBean. Other Things to NoteTo get to the island, you have to park your car in one of two lots (we supply stickers) and take the passenger- only ferry. The ferry schedule is (email hidden)ere are 3 water taxis which will run at your convenience in season.We provide an island car for our guests. There are 2 cars which may need to be shared if the other 2 units are occupied. Because the general store has a fairly limited inventory, our guests my want to bring their favorite groceries. There is a Shaw's and a Hannaford supermarket in Ellsworth, the last large community before the road crosses onto Mount Desert Island.

The SpaceThe "New" Unit was built in 1989. It has 3 bedrooms: 1 king and 1 queen on the second floor and 1 double on the first floor. Each bedroom has it's own bath with shower.There is a full kitchen with small dining table. The living room equipped with Dish TV and a pirate's chest full of games has a view of "the Pool", tidal inlet across the shared deck. This unit is separated from the Antique Unit by the shared utility room where the washer and dryer are located. There is WiFi in the house but reception on the island may be slow and spotty. cell phone reception is similar and may be affected by weather. Guest AccessA large shared deck runs off the utility room, overlooking the ocean view. There is a small "Zen" garden in the space between untis on the quiet side of the house. The property extends to the ocean shore across the street. There is a walking path to the shore for our guests. We have 2 cars available for guests. Also, the Cranberry Explorer, an 8 passenger golf cart runs up and down the island every 1/2 hour from mid-June to October, stopping in front of the Red House. Interaction with GuestsWe may or may not be present during our guests' stay. We can always be reached by cell phone: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) or (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) The NeighborhoodGreat Cranberry Island is 3 miles long and 1 mile wide. About 50 people live there year round. In the summer, there may be 300. There is one main road with four public lanes leading off of it. There are several marked walking trails through the woods leading to the shore. The Historical Society with a small museum, on the main road, has an outdoor café offering lunch. If ordered early in the day, the chef will make take out dinners, including lobster for pick up around 5PM. 4 houses are visible from the Red House. When the Antique Unit was built in 1799, the property was a saltwater farm. It is still surrounded by fields, stretching down to the ocean shore. Getting AroundWe supply 2 cars for 3 units. If all units are rented, renters must share car or cars. It might be a good idea to give cell phone numbers to other guests to insure a ride from the dock. You can park free at the dock and at the Red House. We do ask guests to keep the cars on the pavement. If cars are being used and a guest does not wish to share a phone number, the Cranberry Explorer, an 8 passenger golf cart leaves the dock every 1/2 hour from mid June to October and will take guests to the Red House. It is free but they accept donations. We have 4 or 5 bikes for our guests to ride around the island. Other Things to NoteThe Cranberry General store located at the dock has a small variety of staple foods and drinks, including some organic. Locally caught fish can be ordered. The store has a snack bar and serves breakfast and lunch. Looking out the front windows of the Red House, the second strip on land visible is Islesford, another island. The ferry schedule shows the Islesford stops. Islesford has a museum owned by Acadia National Park, several gift shops and a full service restaurant. The ferry charges 1/2 punch on a ticket each way to go there. Please check the "details " area under the Antique section for additional details.. The SpaceGt. Cranberry Island is about 2 miles out from Northeast or Southwest Harbor. Surrounded by ocean, there is nearly always a lovely breeze. We have no need for air conditioning. The barn is about 50 feet away from the house, on a little knoll, surrounded by fields on 3 sides and woods behind. Guest Accessshared: washer and dryer in house, 9 bicycles, car for transportation of luggage upon arrival and departure only, new deck, shared :charcoal and gas grill, outside gas lobster cooker, fire pit. Our shorefront is accessible by path-clam forks and clam hods provided for those who want to dig up their supper! A shuttle runs every 1/2 hour in summer from the dock to the end of the island. It will pick you up or drop you off in front of the Red House Compound. Interaction with GuestsWe may or may not be on the island when guests are here.They can always call text or email us .       Welcome to our island home. Located down a private driveway, the house sits atop a hill with magnificent views down to the ocean and the mountains beyond. Equipped with six bedrooms, it is suitable both for couples seeking an escape and family groups. Cook in the fully-equipped kitchen, then curl up in front of the fireplace. The shower is outdoors, so you can watch the fog burn off the ocean in the morning or admire the stars at night.

      Some people might consider the perfect escape from city or suburban life would be to spend vacation on a small island off the coast of Maine. If you think enjoying a peaceful, relaxing week with your family in a lovely, quaint summer cottage, a short ferry boat ride away from the bustling attractions of Bar Harbor and Acadia National (but close enough enjoy the restaurants, shopping and outdoor activities) on an outer island, then Kienbusch Cottage is for you. Located on Great Cranberrry Island, a 30 minute ferry boat ride from either Northeast Harbor or Southwest Harbor (on Mount Desert Island), Kienbusch Cottage is a lovely family home on 2.5 acres, just a two minute walk to the shore, and a 5 minute walk to the town dock. Available to guests of the cottage is tennis court access, croquet gear, a few bikes to ride about on the Island, and a friendly neighborhood! And foliage season on the Island is breathtaking too! The cottage features 3 bedrooms: 2 queen bedrooms and a bedroom with 1 twin bed and a small double. There is one full bathroom (with tub and shower) and a 1/2 bath. There is a living room, dining room and kitchen. Amenities include WIFI, washer/dryer, microwave, lots of “kitchen stuff”, picnic table and charcoal grill. Sorry, no TV, so bring those books and board games! Great Cranberry Island has ferry access several times a day. There is a general store on the Island for groceries (groceries can also be delivered from Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor). In Southwest Harbor, the owner of Kienbusch Cottage has a private parking spot for guests (Northeast Harbor has parking for $10/night). From both Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor you can catch the local, free Island Explorer Bus, that travels all over Mount Desert Island, including Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park For your day trips to Mount Desert Island, enjoy shopping, dining, whale watch tours, hiking, kayak tours, biking, lake swimming, sightseeing tours, nature tours and much more!       Oh, to live on an island! What a great adventure!! Come to Cranberry Island, Maine, for the best get-a-way, ever! Ride aboard the ferry to a vacation paradise! Preble Cove Cottage sits right above a private beach with fantastic views from the deck. The 2 story house has 2 bedrooms and a full bath on both levels.( Great fit for 2 families of 4 and the expenses can be shared.) The open concept living area includes an eat-in kitchen and plenty of living and relaxing space. Within walking distance, you can find a grocery store which will provide your needs, including beer and wine, two Cafes, a Museum, Gift shop, Church and Library. You can order lobsters from local lobstermen to be delivered to your door. You will arrive on the island by the Mail boat from the Northeast Harbor Town Pier or the Ferry in Southwest Harbor. Transportation from the dock to the house upon arrival and departure will be provided by the owner. You can bring bikes (some bikes are provided)for transportation around the island if you like. Cranberry Explorer Shuttle runs the length of the island every half hour between 10-4 daily. It drops off and picks up anywhere in route. It is free (although donations are appreciated. It is owned and operated by GCI Historical Society (Cranberry House) and goes to the General Store / Post Office / Ferry Dock, and to the center of the community (Cranberry House / Church / Library / School) ~ Though Preble Cove Cottage is not equipped with Internet ~ Internet service is available, next door, at Cranberry House. If you are looking for a refreshing and renewing experience ~ a trip to Preble Cove Cottage is the perfect fit ~
