WELCOME to the "Jewel of Sugar Creek", 4 miles from town. Yountsville Mill-Inn & Garden on the banks of Sugar Creek is a very special destination. Celebrate a special event, a marriage, an anniversary, to meet old friends, and enjoy history and art. We recommend a two night stay to take in the local sights, or a sporting or arts/concert event at Wabash College. We can arrange for you to dine at the Crawfordsville Country Club for an outstanding lunch or dinner. Enjoy the music of pianist Alan White and visit the studio of accomplished artist, painter, and glass art designer Barbara Brookie White. Several mills thrived along the many creeks and rivers in the early 1800’s but Daniel Yount’s Woolen Mill is the only textile mill that has survived and continues to stand along Sugar Creek. Located just 4 miles west of Crawfordsville, the B & B is in a safe quiet setting with gardens, woods, and many song birds, hawks, Great Blue Heron, and Eagles. The INN is a beautiful example of Federal Style architecture in 1851. Simple, in keeping with Daniel Yount's Quaker faith but with good proportions, solid thick brick walls and deep window sills. The Inn served as the boarding house for women who lived too far away to travel to work each day and The Yount family lived in half of the house. Registered guests are given a tour of the Mill and property with the creeks, fossils, and wooded trails. Mills were extremely important to the lives of the early settlers and the development of the country but most of them have been lost. It is time to help the surviving mills with your support. We are members of Spoom.org. All income from the B & B and the Vacation Cottage (weekly rental) go toward the ongoing maintenance of the Yount's Woolen Mill & Inn, Yountsville, IN. The decorating theme covers a broad range of decorative arts from Queen Anne period to the latest in contemporary design. Throughout the years of every family home, the decor changes and the “new” melds in with favorite pieces of the past. It is gently rolling as you near the Sugar Creek valley which was formed by glaciers during the Mississippian period, 350,000,000 years ago, leaving beautiful limestone cliffs, ravines, spring fed creeks, and waterfalls. The Crawfordsville creeks are famous for the Cranoid fossils that were living underwater sea creatures. The woodlands support an amazing variety of wildflowers in April thru May, hardwood trees which are most noteable for the magnicifant Scyamores, Pawpaw trees that host the Tiger Swallowtail butterfly, Eagles, Great Blue Heron, wild turkeys, fox, and song birds: blue birds to wood peckers. As you turn off St Rd 32 onto W. Old Mill Rd, a sense of peace comes over you as you leave a busy world behind. The Yount's Mill drive is lined with London Plane Trees and daylilies, formal boxwood borders filled with English style flower beds that change with the season. The 1851 Federal style Inn sits high overlooking the creek with The Greek Revival Style Mill at creek level. Daniel Yount selected this sight for his woolen mills where the fleece was brought from far and wide to be washed, carded, dyed, spun, wove, and sewn into clothes. A carding mill was here as early as the 1830's and Daniel bought the mill and water rights in 1840. His son Andrew joined him in the business at a later date. The high point in the Yount mill's history was when the U.S. Government contracted them to make Union uniforms for Civil War soldiers in 1864. At that time the only remaining mill structure was built. Many women worked at the looms and sewed the suits of clothing. The present Inn was built in 1851 as a boarding house where the women could stay for the week paying for their room and meals. Located 4 miles SW of Crawfordsville, IN, off St Rd 32. Daniel selected the most beautiful property along Sugar Creek with Spring Creek bordering it on the west side of the 24 acre property. This natural woodland site is beautiful all year where you will see deer, fox, wild turkeys, blue birds, hawks, Great Blue Heron, and Bald eagles build nests along the creeks. In April through May, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Bloodroot, May-apple, mertensia-Virginia Blue Bells, to name a few wildflowers border the trails through the woods and along the cliffs of Spring Creek. A bit of heaven on Sugar Creek, ...Yountsville Mill is a destination of exceptional charm for artists, the premier creek in the mid-west for bass and carp, photographers, families, reunions, and retreats at a great price. It is on a private 20 acre estate surrounded by formal English style gardens, and woodland wildflowers, and creeks noted for Crinoid fossils from the Mississippian period.. Artist and pianist Innkeepers often share their talents with guests and a tour of the historic mill is scheduled at your convenience. From April thru October: the best fishing along Sugar Creek is at the Historic Mill on private property. We will arrange for a guide (optional) meals, canoes, lodging in the Inn or The Cottage. Lessons will be available for beginners on special dates. This almost forgotten treasure along the beautiful Sugar Creek is a special landmark for Crawfordsville IN. A Vacation Cottage for families, reunions, retreats, workshops, is a place where friends meet to catch up on old times. 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths sleep 5 to 7 people with twin sofa beds available if needed. A deck overlooks a bubbling brook and it is a delightful and peaceful place to relax and enjoy nature. Rental is by the week or a minimum of 3 nights if available. The cottage is completely furnished with kitchen gear and equipment, beautifully decorated, new beds, and swimming pool. Safe pool rules apply and parents are responsible for children. NO pets and no smoking is permitted in the Cottage. Canoe rental sources are close and you can launch your own canoe or kayak from the mouth of Spring Creek into Sugar Creek. Small Mouth Bass are plentiful if you bring your rods and reels. Side roads are great for bikers as well as joggers. In today's revolving and fast paced world, sometimes we need to take a step back and gather the beauty of mother nature. Birds chirping, wind rustling and the sound of creeks bubbling can sometimes be the most peaceful and appreciative moments in life. Over many years of tending and caring for this land, I wanted to provide the public with these precious moments and hopefully you can take advantage of what we have to provide, here at Crazyman's Hideaway. Not only did I imagine secluded camping, and family excursions, but with time I realized I could create a perfect setting for future brides & grooms, to assist in their perfect dream day. I ask that you please take a moment of your time,to look at these magnificent grounds, and help spread the word on the beauty we have here to offer. Our 4 Bedroom House is perfect for your Weekend getaway.
