The Space[Note: this house is in Cromwell, it is not in Queenstown, if you are unfamiliar with the area, please check the map so you know the location). Simple family holiday home in the true heart of Central Otago, Cromwell. An area steeped in Gold Mining history and surrounded by Vineyards. Situated three blocks from Lake Dunstan and 'Old Cromwell' and one block to a playground. 40 minutes to Queenstown airport and 40 minutes to Wanaka. Minimum stay 2 nights (3 nights in winter and public holidays). This is a family friendly holiday house with a fully fenced back yard suitable for small children. French doors lead from the lounge on to a large deck at the front of the house with a shade sail for summer. There is a variety of child-friendly games and activities at the house such as DVD's, swingball, balls and bats, basketball and hoop. The maximum occupancy for rental stays is 6. There are 3 bedrooms. Bedrooms 1 and 2 each have a Queen bed and bedroom 3 has two king-single beds. All of the beds are new. There are options as to how you would like to spread this over the 3 bedrooms - The room with single beds can be set up as 3 single beds and one the queen sized beds have single occupancy. The lounge has a new woodburner and firewood is supplied for winter stays. Both of the Queen beds and the two king singles beds have electric blankets and some hot water bottles are also provided. The house has been furnished in modern furniture and much of the art on the walls reflect the history of the local area. As this is our holiday home which we also use regularly, it comes with a very well resourced kitchen with lots of plates, glasses, cutlery, pots/pans, baking tins etc, even items such as a small food processor and electric hand mixer. Cromwell is at the heart of Central Otago. It takes less than an hour to drive to Queenstown, Arrowtown, Wanaka, Clyde or Alexandra so it is an ideal base for exploring the area. For winter there are four ski fields within driving distance. Within the Cromwell basin is a number of vineyards (some with restaurants) and the area is also known for its stonefruit and cherry orchards. There are a number of cafe's and restaurants in the town including a cafe three blocks from the house. IMPORTANT: Please read the house rules section as to the cleaning arrangements and other requirements. (Please note that the fire does not have a fire guard so winter stays are more suitable for Primary School aged children and up). Whilst reservations can be requested substantially in advance, we usually only make plans for our own personal use of the house about 9 months in advance so reservations that coincide with school holiday periods may not be able to be accepted more than 9 months in advance if we still have yet to determine our own requirements. Check out is 11am. Please contact us if you would like to request a late check out as this is not always available. An extended late check out may incur an additional fee Other Things to NoteWifi is not available at the house. At this stage internet connections in NZ are too costly for us to connect and offer wifi without significantly increasing the nightly cost.

Cromwell is located in the valley of the Upper Clutha, deep in the heart of the dry interior of Central Otago... in a landscape of bare brown hills, of tussock and briar, of purple thyme and tors of schist, of broad basins and fertile valleys, of Lake Dunstan's pristine waters and of gorges carved by two great rivers... a landscape first trodden by the Maori hunter and trader, opened to European settlement by the sheepmen, exploited and transformed by the gold seekers and later by the dam builders... and now home to the merino and deer farmer, to orchards and vineyards, to artists and artisans and to those, tempted by the landscape and history, climate and location and the myriad of pursuits offered on land and water, to visit this 'timeless land'.

The SpaceThe name of the room comes from a conversation with Jill (nee) Hotop held in 2014 who is a granddaughter of Apothecary Henry Hotop. She relates that as an 8 year old in the 1930's lots of 'fat ladies' stayed in the room. It was only later she learnt they were country pregnant women waiting to give birth at the locan Maternity hospital! The NeighborhoodCromwell is a little town located in Central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. It lies approximately 423 km (263 mi) from Christchurch, 222 km (138 mi) from Dunedin, 60 km (37 mi) from Queenstown, 54 km (34 mi) from Wanaka, and 32 km (20 mi) from Alexandra. Things to do around Cromwell While Cromwell itself does not offer a lot of activities, there are a couple of places you could visit in the vicinity of Cromwell to see or do things. The fruit trees in orchards around Cromwell can display nice fall foliage in autumn and blossoms in spring. Cromwell lies just South of Lake Dunstan. Locals tend to go fishing on Lake Dunstan and also do water activities that require a boat. For you as a tourist, the most likely options would be to just sit by the lake or photograph it. Roaring Meg is a location you could briefly stop at when driving from Cromwell to Queenstown on State Highway 6. In summer, there are fruit stalls nearby Cromwell on State Highway 6 when driving towards Queenstown or towards Wanaka, which you can stop at to buy fruit or go pick your own fruits. Clyde Dam is a short drive South of Cromwell, which you can briefly stop at on your way to Alexandra or Central Otago. You could drive to Central Otago and visit Blue Lake in St. Bathans, which is a man-made lake, but nonetheless picturesque and where you can also do a couple of walks. Cromwell is the service town for local farmers, fruit growers and vineyards. The particularly dry climate here is ideal for growing stone fruits and grapes, making Cromwell and the Central Otago district most reputable for its production of red wine. The man-made Lake Dunstan surrounds much of the town, making Cromwell a popular spot for Waterskiers and Wakeboarders, but the Highlands Motorsport Park is Cromwell’s latest attraction. Nearby settlements include Bannockburn, Clyde and Tarras, with Alexandra a little further north. (URL HIDDEN) Getting AroundCentral Otago is not just about the towns, its about the country, so whether by bus, rental car or tour, the true Central Otago experience is by taking the smaller roads and getting off the beaten track. It’s a different pace, so take your time - the roads are not crowded and it's easy to stop for a photo or to explore. Rent a vehicle or a bicycle, catch a bus from one town to another, or book a tour and be guided through the area. The choice is yours for getting around but just be sure to allow time to fit in the wine tasting, great food and all the walking and cycling trails around. Other Things to NotePlease do not hesitate to ask me any question or information you need to prepare your stay here and make it as comfortable as possible! I will do my best to help you. I hope to see you soon!
