The SpaceThe wheelchair accessible property includes a heated porch overlooking the Grand River, 2 outdoor porches, a large meeting room (with a much-loved but somewhat out-of-tune piano and 2 large hide-a-bed couches), a well-stocked kitchen, living room/dining room with a wood burning stove, 3 bedrooms with double beds (2 with murphy beds and desks), and 2 full bathrooms, one with a double-size jacuzzi tub and a large window to the property. The property itself is 25 acres, with trails blazed for walking, snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing etc. Guest AccessGuests have access to 25 acres: paths through the woods, along the stream, along the river, and mowed through the fields; stairs to seating along the river. This listing is for the whole main floor-- if you only require a room, please see our alternate listing on AirBnB. There is a self-contained garden-level apartment that sometimes is occupied, but there is no interaction between that apartment and the homestay when the house is rented. Interaction with GuestsI am an accomplished poet and academic who deeply loves this former retreat center and enjoys sharing it with others. I initially decided to offer the space based on my own experiences at writers' residencies in Virginia, North Carolina, and Banff. The NeighborhoodNestled above a bend in the Grand River just upstream from Lyons, MI, the property shows all the brilliance of the Michigan wilderness. Each season brings something special-- hummingbirds, herons and orioles in the summer, brilliant foliage in the fall, silent snow and bald eagles in the winter, and trillium in the spring. Getting AroundThe property is located 45 minutes from Lansing and 45 minutes from Grand Rapids, directly on the Grand River. There are groceries, a few restaurants, and other supplies available in nearby Portland, about a 10-minute drive away. Other Things to NoteAs mentioned, this is a great place for folks who want space to write and collaborate with others. It has seen poetry workshops, writers' retreats, small group collaborations, family gatherings, and many other creative and healing endeavors. Daytime workshops for larger groups can also be arranged — please contact me for rates. Cell phone service and 3g/4g internet depend on your own provider; please note that there is no house internet included. Holidays require minimum 3-day reservation.

This is a four bedroom, 2 bath cottage that sits right on the water of Crystal Lake. It's on the most coveted street on the lake. It's very quiet and because of how the property sits on the lake, there is no seaweed! It's all sand in the water by our dock. Between the panoramic view from the living room next to the stone fireplace to the view from the grill on the deck, this cottage is sure to delight even the hardest of hearts. If you want to turn off your cell phone, relax and float away that stress, you've found your summer memory maker-look no further. Lansing = 50 minutes Mt. Pleasant = 40 minutes Grand Rapids = 58 minutes Rents Friday to Friday Crystal Lake is a spring-fed, clean/clear lake with a sandy bottom. The lake is 70 foot deep at it's maximum, but is shallow on the lake shores and has one buoy-marked rock in the southeast section of the lake. The lake supports a mixed use of sail, power, and fishing activities from late March through late November. Sailing on the lake is supported by the Crystal Sailing Club. Established in 1961, the CSC is a family centered working club which supports a Flying Scot fleet. The club is located on the North shore of the lake. The most common classes of sailboats found on the lake are Flying Scots, Sunfish, and some larger cruiser type boats (to about 25'). Public access to Crystal Lake can be made via a DNR boat launch. The best time to view sailing activities are during the Parade of Sails on July 4th, during Flying Scot fleet activities, and during Crystal Sailing Club functions as per their website. The preceeding information was graciously provided by Mr. James Horak, Commodore of the Crystal Sailing Club. For more information on the cottage owner and their story, please click the links below.
